London?
Can anyone recommend some stitchery stores in central London, and if possible, directions by tube or bus? I seem to recall there's a fairly large selection in one of the big stores, but I can't for the life of me remember which one. Thanks!

Hi.
John Lewis on Oxford Street has some. I haven't been to a shop in central london that has more but I generally buy via e-bay so I haven't searched massively! In case you haven't been there, John Lewis is west of Oxford street tube - hang on I'll find you a map.....

I think John Lewis is the one I was thinking of - sounds right, anyway. Thanks!

Here to lend you a hand Sharon:

The world famous Harrods in Knightsbridge (Knightsbridge, Piccadilly Line Dark Blue)

Liberty (looks like an Elizabethan black and white house) in Great Marlborough Street (Oxford Circus, Central Line, Red or Victoria Line, Light Blue). They sell beautiful kits.

There used to be a market stand selling buttons in Covent Garden Plaza (Covent Garden, Piccadilly Line Dark Blue - best to walk from next stop from Leicester Square) but I don't know whether it still exists or not.

Or try Portobello Road market (Ladbrooke Grove, Hammersmith & City Line, Pink or Notting Hill Central Line Red).

Buy a Zone 1-2 off peak card or Oyster Card to enable you to travel on both on the tube and on the bus. Saves you fiddling about for money.

Jen

Fantastic, thanks! I was planning on Harrods & Libery's anyway, good to know they're places to find cross-stitch too!

And I've already got the Oyster card; I feel like a seasoned traveller next to all these tourists. (But one day, I'll have to figure out how to spend all these tuppence which accumulate in my pocket....)

Ooh, Harrod's?? That's a great excuse for me to go there - lived here 10 years and never been to Harrod's, I should be ashamed!
Also, there is a shop on Portobello Road that sells stitching kits and pre printed tapestry canvases, plus many other stitching bits and pieces and has a selection of interesting wool. It's about half way along I think and it's on a corner!

Okay, I give up. Liberty was FANTASTIC, and I bought probably more than I should have done. But I couldn't find anything remotely stitching related in Harrods - either they don't carry it any longer or I was just hopelessly lost. (And I'm counting on the latter - they really ought to hand out maps to that place when you go in!)
