DMC colors
Have DMC colors changed much/at all in the past twenty years?

I got a bunch of DMC floss from my grandmother, and some of it has got to be in the neighborhood of 10-20 years old.

Some colors have been retired or reformulated, notably a shift in several shades of grey after 1995 due to a change in dye.

This post from last year has more on DMC shades retired in Europe in 2001: http://community.livejournal.com/cross_stitch/1083602.html

FYI, the Aion link from the post last year now comes up 404. Christine-Ann Martin - the person behnd Aion Designs - pulled the information pages at the end of 2006 as she could no longer take the time to do all the maintenance herself.

Kathy Dyer's site has moved, so here's the current link - http://home.comcast.net/~kathydyer/nf_fibers.html#dmc_color_changes

In a nutshell, if you have some of the discontinued floss, be very careful to use it in a design where you won't run short! *grin*

Thanks for the updates. I'll miss Aion Designs' page on floss color history; she explained the 1995 dyestuff change much better than I could.

I have a small stash of the pre-1995 grey shades just in case I need it for one of the UFOs that come my way for finishing.

Some have, some haven't. As you stitch with it, you may want to purchase extra skeins of those colors and just compare them side by side to see if you can blend them.

Also, you might want to give a good tug from each end of it to see if it pulls apart. Sometimes old floss tends to get "rotten".

Good to know!

Would it help if it had been kept in a container?

hmm... good question. I honestly have no clue if that would make a difference... will have to do some research on that one :)
