In search of a pencil holder

I'm hoping you stitchin' geniuses can help me find something: a pencil holder to stitch! I've seen these in a couple of the different pattern books I've checked out of the library, and the books usually refer to them as if I know exactly where to find them ("follow manager's directions..."). The ones I've seen are triangular, with Aida in the three sides, and it looks as if they're made of your basic clear rigid plastic. I have the idea to make one for a friend's birthday later this summer (he's a nautical nut, and I found some neat sailboat diagrams that I think will fit nicely.)

I've tried my local stitch shop, but they don't have a lot of the bric-a-brac type things (trinket boxes and the like), and I looked at Hobby Lobby and Joanne. I looked online at another bigger store in the next county, and I tried 123stitch, so I'm running out of ideas. I have a few more online places to look, but at this point I'm not feeling hopeful. Have any of you folks seen such a thing, either in person or online/in books? Is this is a fool's errand? (Wouldn't be the first time.... ) Thanks for any hints or ideas!

I found this link. It might work, though it's a cylinder.

Yay! I bookmarked the exact same thing. What I like about this one is it's more freeform. If I can't find the panel-type one I'm looking for, I'll definitely use something else from my stash for one like this. (though I really love the bunnies they use in the sample!)

You're probably looking for 7-count plastic canvas, which is usually stitched with worsted-weight (or standard) yarn. I know I have several pencil holder designs in my huge-o stash; some for kids, others as adult desk-sets.

I was thinking of giving up and going with plastic canvas, but what I've seen is actually like a standing triangle of lucite or some such, with fabric stuck inside. I see other things made out of it all the time, such as doggie dishes and sippy cups (an example: http://www.purplekittyyarns.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=835). Naturally, I've fixated on the one thing that doesn't actually exist, outside of pictures in books :)

Hmm,..

Oh! The vinyl weave stuff? Hm, Yeah, that'd probably work. (I've only used it in a mug before, but I think it can be sold separate.) I haven't seen it much lately, you may have to use a catalog or on-line supplier. It's probably gone out of vogue...

Found one from framecraft: http://www.framecraft.com/products.html (under "pen holder/pen stand"). I know one of the books where I saw the example that inspired me was published in England; I wonder if these are to be found in the U.S.?

Darn it! England always has the better cross-stitchery bric-a-brac! I've seen things in UK stitching magazines that I've never seen in the US!

You could also try looking for a mug or glass that has space to insert cross stitch or a photo. I know I end up using my mugs and glasses to hold my pens and pencils. Plus mugs and glasses that have the space for inserting cross stitch or a photo also will protect your work better from ink and pencil lead.
