I was wondering...
If anybody knew of a forum dedicated to cross-stitch? I used to run a dolling forum, but recently stepped down as administrator. And was looking for a new forum to bug. LOL. I was even thinking of creating one myself, but its so much trouble sometimes.....

Also, do you ALWAYS wash your work? or the threads? I dont...I constantly wash my hands to try and prevent anything from getting on them, although sometimes accidents do occur. lol

I wash my hands like crazy too! If I'm using regular DMC cotton, I'll handwash it gently in cold water, because I'm confident the colors won't run. I've never been brave enough to wash one that wasn't DMC cotton, though.

I don't know of any cross-stitching forums (forii??) but if you find one I'd love to check it out too.

One I found but haven't read/visited in a LONG time: http://p078.ezboard.com/bcrossstitchcorner50421

There's also a Teresa Wentzler board: http://p203.ezboard.com/bteresawentzler

I wash every piece after I am done with it. I just use regualr detergent and hand-wash it in the sink in cold water, then rinse it very well. I usually then throw it in the dryer in the delicate cycle, and iron and startch it to high heaven so it will be stiffer for storage and eventual framing. I have never had any problems, although I have heard a few horror stories of colors running.

I've only washed a couple of pieces, both items that I took a really long time to finish. Because it took so long, they didn't stay looking as nice and clean (they were also early projects, done in university instead of studying, so I wasn't as fanatical about working with clean hands.)

Anyway, I tried the "approved" method - luke warm water, dish-detergent, pat dry, iron from the wrong side with a protective cloth. Didn't even touch the stains. Since it was a gift, and I was going to be paying almost $100 for framing, I really wanted it to look nice. So I had it dry-cleaned. I was nervous at first, but it looked amazing afterwards. I talked to them at the cleaners, and the girl I spoke to actually did X-stitch and dry-cleaned all her work before framing, and has never had a problem with stitches pulling out or dyes running. The only other problem I can think of is the chemicals and their effects on the fabric and floss, but if it works to preserve wedding gowns, it can't be that bad.

I only wash threads when I don't know their origin (i.e., stuff I've inherited, not stuff I've bought), but I always wash and press pieces after I finish them.

The hardest stain I ever got in a needlework piece was blue popsicle, which a former partner dripped on the work in progress while eating in the living room. Woolite only lightened it; OxyClean took it right out.

I get my husband to hand wash them with Woolite for me when I'm done. Most of my work so far has been gifts, so he likes that he gets to say he had a part in creating it. He usually frames them too.
