Cross Stitch for Weight Loss
I just thought I would sahre that cross stitch is helping me lose weight, and I was wondering if anyone else does the same thing. I am a big snacker, and I get the munchies esp. bad at night after work. But if I eat dinner, then pick up my cross stitch project, it keeps my hands so busy that before I know it, it is time for bed and I haven't snacked at all! I am currently working on THIS and it is just complicated enough that it really keeps me interested. It has taken me about 2 years so far, and I have the entire top half done, and a good chunk of the bottom half. Right now I am working on the gold portion of her dress in that lower half.

So does anyone else use stitching as a way to help them lose weight? How complicated are the projects you guys use for that? I have a few patterns I want to try next, and I want to do a screen shot from Mario Bros for my brother with Home Sweet Home on there too.

I use all kinds of crafts to distract me. Amazing how you don't want chips or chocolate in your hands when you're working on something that has already taken 100 hours of your time!

I am totally the same way! I'm on weight watchers and I've noticed that when I cross-stitch at night (or even during the day on weekends) that I don't snack nearly as much. It doesn't matter for me what the pattern is, just so long as my hands stay busy. I also find I don't snack because I'm afraid that I'll stain the fabric somehow.

i find that i'm the same way - i don't want to stain the fabric, and if i'm "getting somewhere" i don't want to put the stitching down to munch!

however, it's also a good way to get my water in for the day, since, well, it's water and isn't going to stain as much as popcorn/candy/soda.

I try to drink water when I cross stitch too, but my current project makes that difficult. It's a stamped fabric birth sampler for my sister-in-law, and the stamping is water soluble ink. Wasn't much of a problem in the winter, but this summer the condensation on my cup gets so thick that it drips all over my shirt! I have to lean sideways and hold the hoop out to the opposite side whenever I take a drink.

I'll post a picture of it on Saturday when I finally get a day off from work.

Yes, exactly! I've lost nearly 30lbs now and I'm only 8lbs off my target weight.

I am doing WW too! Last night I had no points left and felt the snack urge, and cross-stitch saved the day. :-)

I worry about the same thing. Once I pick it up, I won't eat anything until I am done for a while because I am paranoid I will get something on my hands and stain the project.

Definitely! I'm too obsessed with cross stitching to put it down and snack on something unless I'm actually hungry!

LOL, I have actually let myself get really hungry before, since I just wanted to get that one last little secton done, which of course ends up taking way longer than I think it will!

I'll ignore being hungry when I'm stitching, because it's a bit of a pain to put my things away so that while I'm off getting food, the dogs don't step on anything. This is bad for me, because I'm actually trying to gain weight.

Well, I havent used it to help me loose weight, I dont snack much. But I did use it to help me quit smoking! It kept my hands occupied!

Yeah, I find the same thing! Just having something in my hands, and having an activity that requires enough of my attention that I don't think about eating seems to do the trick. But I can still watch TV or carry on a conversation while I am stitching. It is fast becoming the cornerstone of my weight-loss strategy. :-)

not ness. for weight loss but distraction and keeping oneself from bad habits, most definitely! The anti eat, the anti smoke :) I get sucked in and stitch for hours!

Same here! I sit down with the intention of only stitching for a short time, and hours later realize half the day is gone. Man those are great weekends. But eve in the evening, I have to be careful, otherwise I would stitch all night and not notice.
