My First Attempt at Fingerless Gloves (x-posted in my personal journal, but it is friends-locked)

OK, y'all, this is the first time I tried to make these. (Actually, I only made one, but I just wanted to see if I could do it.) I don't have a pattern, per se. I can eventually write it down (I think).  Please let me know what you think. One of the things I know I need to do is make them larger because these will not fit me. (I am goddess-sized.) My "model" is my hubby who is much smaller than I.

I think it's lovely. And I really want to know what kind of yarn that is, because I WANT. Pretty colors!

I ghot the yarn on clearance at Jo-Ann fabrics. Sorry. I was lucky to find this one, a one with white, green, & blue, and one all black and white. They were less than a dollar a piece for each ball.

Thank you. I am glad you enjoyed it.

Oooh, I need to hit clearances at my local craft stores, then. :)

Yes, clearance aisles, dollar tree, and deals have become some of my favorite places to get my wares.

Oh, and yeah...the yarn came on the ball this way, but it is 2 strands of size 10 crochet cotton. One strand is a solid red while the other is varigated.

I am having a serious "duh" moment.

Ahhh, I did a really pretty reticule-type bag in this thread a couple of years ago. It is Aunt Lydia's Double Strand Thread in Victory Red/Mexicana. I still have a part of a ball of this. Here's a link to order it: http://www.coatsandclark.com/NR/exeres/5076491F-D051-42E6-BE98-C8B7C7FD8A47.htm

Enjoy! I love this stuff, too.

Love them! Where did you get the pattern?

I made the pattern myself. I haven't wrote it down yet as I am still working out the kinks (like size and such). I am proud of myself, none the less.

Youd should definitely write this pattern down and when you get your Ravelry invite, you should join the Fingerless Gloves Fanatics and post them there. There aren't enough crocheters in that group! I feel lonely. :-P

Thank you, I will. I just want to get it right size-wise b/c many of my friends (and myself) are "goddess-size" and I want to make sure that my pattern will work for everyone. it is a simple pattern so far, though.

A few things:

That "yarn" is awesome. I love the way a solid crochet thread and a variegated thread work together. It looks really neat in the picture. As verification, yes, you most definitely "got it". I think it looks great, and if you've never made an armwarmer before, that's a very good first time.

I would make a few changes for myself, namely personal preference, that might open up some design possibilities for you, but in no means knocks on what you've done there.

The big one being that I would work in the round, at least to the thumb hole, and I'd probably play with it a bit to get a thumb hole that seems to fit in as wells as yours does. But, yeah, not a big fan of the seam. Maybe part of that is that the DC stitching is so open and airy, then the seam is pretty, well, solid? I'm not sure. If the fabric were made out of, say, a dense sc stitch, with fewer "holes", maybe I wouldn't think the seam stuck out so much.

The other thing I would do is some ribbing at the bottom and the top to help "gather" it in; crochet is not a forgiving fabric, and while I love the straight lines that formed at your edges, I can't help but think it will eventually sag and need a tie to keep it tight enough to be of use and not slide down my arm and end up being a slouched arm warmer.

I was thinking the same thing about the seam. Once it's been worn for a while it's going to be obvious how twisted it gets, and even though it's on the underside it will still be visible.

That's really neat yarn. Reminds me of sari silk yarn, but it's probably a lot easier to work with! :)
