I'm trying to crochet a hat and have had issues reading the pattern, so I freestyled and got this...

Haha, this was what happened the first 578492579436 times I ever tried to crochet. I used this yarn, too. :D

Well, what kind of hat do you intend to make? Is there pattern online that you're trying to emulate so we can see exactly what you're trying to do?

I'm assuming that you want a basic beanie or watch cap style, ie - head shaped, not pointed. If so, then you're not increasing enough stitches per round in the beginning. A basic hat is usually pretty flat on top until you reach the point where it curves down the sides of the head.

It looks like you're working this piece "in the round". Are you marking the beginning stitch of each round? If not, then it's pretty easy to lose your place and not know when you should change for the next increase.
