Newsarama wins Eisner [Jul. 26th, 2008|11:25 am]

Last night, Newsarama.com Senior Editor Matt Brady accepted the Eisner Award for "Best Comics-Related Periodical/Journalism". As a writer for the site since 2003 and as a man with an enormous ego, I'd like to think that my work there helped make this happen. Congrats to Matt, Mike, Vaneta, Ben, Steve and everyone else I'm ignorantly forgetting.

I realize that might be just FAR TOO MUCH excitement, so I also brought this:

Had a fun day today, despite getting nearly nothing done that I wanted to. I really wanted to go to the Venture Bros. panel, but when I went to get in line (over an hour early) the line was already so long it left the building and wrapped around to the front... so yeah, didn't do that. The same thing happened with the MST3k show later, which was a major bummer.

Anyhow, here's some pictures of my vault suit. They're REALLY crappy, but I don't have the energy to take-download-cleanup-upload-post any more than I have to.

The angle I'm standing at from the front is pretty much the worst angle to see the costume from, because you can see the seam where the suit zips up. Again- too lazy to retake. I also had safety glasses I was wearing for a lot of the day, but they pinched my head and I didn't really want to put them on again. Plus, there aren't any safety glasses in Fallout, I just thought they looked kinda sciencey.

So, Bryan Lee O'Malley signed all my Scott Pilgrim books, though he only put a little doodle in one of them, which is totally fine, actually, since I was like the last person in line, and he'd been drawing for a million years by that point. I got a copy of the collected Sam and Max comics with a bunch of extra art from incidental projects, which was really sweet even if it was $20. I even got Purcell to draw me a Sam on the inside cover, and chatted briefly about his character designs (he's a REALLY nice dude).

So, tomorrow is Budget Man day. I'm going to try to not take a bag or anything with me, which could be tricky, since I'll need a place to stow my belt, mask, sign, and cape. Maybe I can wrap them all up in a bindle.

Did some drawing tonight. Just for fun... not for anything -- which is refreshing once and a while. This is the stuff that didn't suck too hard. Actually, there was one other one that isn't bad. Maybe if I feel like it later on I'll scan and post that as well.

Oh, and Fuck Burcu from Burcu's Angels for going in to Mike's Jem art gallery opening last weekend and ripping on his amazing art in a big loud, obnoxious voice. I only heard about it second hand, but I wish I was there. That shit isn't cool. You don't know shit, you attention-whore. You spew feminist rhetoric without even knowing what the hell it means.

Obviously no one agrees with your claims of racism and sexism, because the show was a success. Too bad for you. Eat farts.

I meant to do so many things... write a bit about comic con, post up some pictures, have some laughs...

All I managed to do was come home and fall asleep on the couch watching a show about Nicola Tesla. No photos because my clothes exploded off of me like a firecracker once I got indoors. I'm probably wearing the vault suit costume again tomorrow, and going as budget man on the big day, Saturday.

I had a LOT of fun so far. The whole vibe of the convention seems a little different, but it's hard to pinpoint, especially on the first day. I got my pass and got in in no time flat, which was a welcome change from the usual "let's spend 2 hours in a line that stretches to seaport village and back in the direct sunlight" experience. From what I hear, the people who went to preview night got plenty of that action.

At 10:37 a.m. Walter Koenig said "Nuclear Wessels" and I was THERE for it. Nobody even had to embarrass themselves by asking him.

Anyway, bed is lobbying pretty hard for me to get into it right now, so I'll write more some time when I'm less semi-conscious.

Final note, there seems to be a lot more girls in attendance this year than usual, though the fact that I'm single this year might be skewing those results. Doesn't matter, because no girl wants to put their mouth on a dude in a jumpsuit. The people who appreciated my costume tended to be people who liked Fallout... dudes my age or a little older (and one super-excited mexican security guard who was pretty funny and kept saying I should have made a Dogmeat puppet).

Fodder for Spam? [Jul. 24th, 2008|03:29 pm]

Cartoonist and Stuart collaborator Eric Adams has brought to my attention a rather unusual and sort-of-offputting piece of blog-spam which takes a post I did about my 2006 self-published comics anthology Four Stories into a misworded, gregarious new phrase. Check it out here.

Should I use Chris Measly as my pen-name?

Art commission for a DEBBIE DOES DALLAS fan:

In other news:

1. I keep buying boxes of crutons, and Rebecca keeps eating them as if they were chips/crackers before I get a chance to actually put any in a salad.

2. I was riding my bmx on the street past a middle aged woman walking on the sidewalk last week, and she yelled "FUCK YOU!" very angrily. When I looked to see who she was yelling at, our eyes met and she yelled even louder: "FUCKING FREAK!!".

3. I listened to CRUMB again tonight while drawing/lettering. I never get tired of that movie.

4. Today on Dr. Phil they talked briefly about women getting breast implants. He and his guests didn't seem to have an opinion on this - if it were a good or bad thing - except when it was mentioned that some men are getting them too. They all agreed that this was disgusting, and that credible breast augmentation doctors would not do such a horrible thing.

Like the book says, "it's surely a novelty universe." [Jul. 24th, 2008|12:06 am]

uminthecoil
Just when I'm more or less decided upon moving to Wisconsin I wake up from a nap ( from a wickedly odd dream which I'll spare you ) and read this.

Having only just left Kokomo some weeks ago, I have to grin and shake my unkempt head at the odds.

Synchronicity - a faith upon which only serves to facilitate my tin foil hat collection, sure...but if it helps, I'll share a little something that struck me as maybe too 'left field' at the time...and for anyone who has followed this journal over the years, you might recall my somewhat involuntary fascinaion with Synchronicity, in especially as it pertains to the curious frequency by which I see the number 44 ( which are often paired up alongside other Synchronicities or moments of occasion )...well, the afternoon that my mom passed away happened to be my brother Mike's birthday ( of all days, his fucking birthday ), and sure enough, he turned 44 that day.

Me - synchronicity, what the hell are you anyway?
Synchronicity - imagine if the collective-consciousness was, by and large, limited to sending messages via a random quote generator.
Me - ummm...can I buy you drink?
Synchronicity - "Gravitation is not responsible for people falling in love."
Me - Good grief

So "I" finished my costume. I use quotes, because my mom is the one who actually finished it. After filling out my employment forms, I came home and started sewing. I got a pretty respectable amount done, but it quickly became apparent that it was beyond the scope of my abilities, and while I COULD have finished it myself, I would have ended up still sewing on the train to San Diego. I'm super grateful for the help on a few of the spots where she was able to do with the machine what would have taken me at least hours by hand, even if she did kinda use up a fair bit of the time she saved me by fiddling around with some special way to do the collar. Still, unless you're a total nitpicker (which I totally am), it's pretty damn cool.

I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. It's not quite what I was envisioning, but there's no way what I was envisioning could have happened without a seamstress.

Anyway, I need to go pass out now.

Can't stop laughing at this vid that Rebecca found.
I love that it seems to have a look on it's face that says "WHAT?! That's not right!"
