Hi, guys! I'm making this entry to let you guys know that I will be closing cristal_graphix although it's been great this past year I feel it's time to move on and look ahead. I've decided to collaborate with my sister newexistence and create a joint icon/graphics journal falsemomentum. Hopefully you guys can friend it and still enjoy the graphics I soo love to make for you guys. Oh and to all my affiliates, I've already contacted you guys and made the necessary arrangements. :)

I start off using this picture and we crop and resize. And we get our base.

Now that we have our base, we duplicate it and set to Soft Light Opacity 100%.

Right away, I recognize that it's too dark so I go back to our base and duplicate it and set it to Screen Opacity 58%

Go back to your top layer and create a New Raster Layer and fill it with #FFC0C0 set to Burn Opacity 54%.

Duplicate the layer (this pinkish one) and set to Multiply Opacity 56%.

Create a New Raster Layer and fill it with #FAE7D0, set to Burn 14%.

to

Go back to your Soft Light Layer, should be your third one, duplicate it and drag it to the top. Now go Adjust>Hue and Saturation>Hue/Saturation/Lightness and make sure the settings are like this Edit: Master Hue: 180 Saturation:0 Lightness: 0 so it should look like this . Now that we've desaturated this layer, don't do anything else don't change the opacity, leave it at 100%.

Duplicate the previous layer we were working with (the desaturated one), only changed the Opacity to 50%

Right click on your icon and select Copy Merge or you can go to Edit>Copy Merge and then right click again and select Paste>Paste As New Layer. Now select your Soften Brush and carefully use it to soften Katies face.

Go back to your second desaturated layer (the 50% opacity one) and duplicated and drag it to the top but change the opacity to 18%.

Go to your Screen Layer (should be the second one) duplicate and drag to the top, change opacity to 16%.

and Voìla your icon is done.

I start off using a picture that I got from here for the life of me I couldn't find this damn picture, but I distinctly remember that I got it from there. Anyhoo on with the show we crop and resize. And we get our base.

Now that we have our base, we duplicate it and set to Soft Light Opacity 100%.

Create a New Raster Layer and fill it with #040D24, set to Exclusion 100%.

Again Create a New Raster Layer and fill it with #000080 set to Exclusion Opacity 30%

to

I always love to incorporate colors that are already in the icon, now this one wasn't in the icon, but I know Emma was wearing a purple dress to that event so that gave me the idea to use this color. Create a New Raster Layer and fill it with #ECBDED and set to Burn Opacity 26%.

Go back to your second Exclusion Layer (the really light bluish one) and duplicate it and bring it to the top of all the other layers, set to Burn Opacity 6%.

Create another New Raster Layer, and fill it with this #FDEDD5 set to Burn Opacity 44%.

Go back to your base and duplicate it and set to Screen Opacity 42%

Flatten your image, duplicate the icon and set to Soft Light Opacity 100%.

Create a New Raster Layer and fill it with #FDEDD5, set to Burn Opacity 100%.

Now the icon looks too yellowish, so create another New Raster Layer and fill it with #010229 and set to Exclusion Opacity 100%.

Now that we effectively neutralized the strong yellow color, the icon doesn't look alive. So let's create another New Raster Layer and fill it with #000080 and set to Exclusion Opacity 20%.

Right, so now I duplicate this layer (the strong blueish one, in the previous step) and set it to Burn Opacity 6%.

Create another New Raster Layer, and fill it with a light pink color like this #FFC0C0 set to Burn Opacity 26%.

The icon looks too dark now, so go back to your base and duplicate it and set to Screen Opacity 54%

to

Go back to your top layer and creater a New Raster Layer and fill it with #C000C0 set to Soft Light Opacity 16%.

3rd Tutorial: Coloring Black and White Images

First we start with a black and white picture like this.

Create a New Raster Layer and color in the skin with your Airbrush tool (). With the color #FDEDD5. But erase his eyes and teeth, but not his lips. So now you have this. Set to Color, Opacity 42%. Name the layer "Skin 1", when coloring it's easier to name the layers in order to go back and to change or correct something in them.

Next create another New Raster Layer and color the sweater red with the color #FF4040. Erase any red that goes beyond the sweater set to Color, Opacity 50%. Name that Layer "Red Sweater".

Create another New Raster Layer and name this one "Outside Window" you can name it whatever you want, but this is just what I chose. So then you can either use the fill bucket because it's a larger space or just use your brush tool. I decided to use my fill bucket because it was easier to erase in my opinion. Using the color #6BFD6B set to Color Opacity 27%.

Then we again create another New Raster Layer and color it with #40FFFF. Color in only the shirt collar and name it "Blue Shirt" and set to Color Opacity 32%.

Right, now we're going to color his hair. Using the Airbrush tool color it using a light brown color #9D5719 and set to Color Opacity 56%. Name the Layer "Hair 1"

Now I didn't really need to color this because it's looks okay, but when you coloring things details matter. So yes again we make another New Raster Layer and color #404040 and we color the horizontal bar in the background on the window and set to Color Opacity 58%. I realized I coul've gone higher on the opacity and it woul've looked fine, but sublety is key. :) Named this layer "Window Pane", btw.

Yay, we're almost halfway done! Hang in there. (patient people get cookies! ♥)

Next we move on to the eyes. I chose a really bright almost neon blue #40FFFF same as in the shirt. When coloring black and white photos I find it's best to choose really strong, bold and bright colors, that way when you change the opacity they look natural and good instead of if you choose light colors they wouldn't even show on the black and white photos. So yeah color in his eyes and name the eye layer "Eyes" and set to Color Opacity 18%.

Alright so far the picture looks fine and we can leave it at that and finish it here. But again it's all about the details so I choose to continue and just polish it up a bit, so we color his lips with the airbrush tool but this time I chose a low color because I don't want his lips to stand out. I just want them to be there just a bit pale color, because I don't want it to look like lipstick. (because he's a man but if you were coloring a woman obviously you'd go higher on the Opacity) So I chose this color #FFC0C0 and set it to Color Opacity 8% and name the layer "Lips". Yes subtle and unncessary but I like the effect it gives.

Now the next thing that brought my attention was his skin it's too pale and has no life. So to spice it up a bit I make another layer and take my Paintbrush tool()(with the settings of size 55, hardness 0, step 10, density and thickness both 100 and rotations 0) and set the color at #FFC0C0. For this I did things a little backwards I set the layer to Color and lowered the Opacity to 12% and then using the paintbrush tool I colored in certain places I thought needed life, such as his the sides of his neck, cheeks, and forehead.

Okay, now we're going to whiten his teeth. For this I duplicate the original image(the black and white one) bring it to the top of all the layers and erase everything but the teeth and set that to Screen Opacity 22%. Name this layer "Teeth".

Now go to Edit>Copy Merged or (right click on the image>copy merged), then right click on the image and Paste as new Layer and set that layer to Soft Light Opacity 26%

I initially stopped after this step but then I noticed something was wrong. I realized Prince William has blondish/brownish hair not chesnut brown hair *headdesk*. So I had to go back and again make another New Raster Layer and color his hair #FFFF40 and set that to Color Opacity 26% and name the layer "Hair 2".

Next I noticed his skin was also again too pale and had no life, I mean it had dimension to it due to the Paintbrushing I did eariler but it was still I don't know just something was off. I mean skin isn't only just one color it's multi dimensional. So I make a New Raster Layer and using the Airbrush tool color his skin like before only this time with a different color #F58929. Name this layer "Skin 2" and set it to Color Opacity 10%.

Right now this is the last step. Create a New Raster Layer and using your Airbrush tool () color in his gums but only the ones on top of his mouth with this color #FF8080. Name layer "Gums" and set to Color Opacity 20%. And Voila! Your done! (gives cookies ♥) At the end your Layers Palette should look like this .

Now that we have our base, we add a New Raster Layer and fill it with color #C1FBFF which is a nice blueish color and set it to Burn Opactity %100.

Still on the bluiesh layer I deleted the girl and the umbrella because I wanted to contrast the umbrella color with the building behind.

Then I add a peachy/beige gradient and set it to Burn Opacity %100.

Duplicate your base and bring it to the top of all your layers and set it to Soft Light %100, but erase the woman's face because it looks too dark.

Create a New Raster Layer, fill with color #FFC0C0, and set it to Burn Opacity %46, and erase the woman's face again.

Again make another New Raster Layer and fill with color #F6B3F7 and set to Burn Opacity %20.

Since the building still doesn't stand out so much, we go back to the blue layer and duplicate it twice.

Now go back to your peachy/beige layer and duplicate once.

First Icon Tutorial

Alright this is my first tutorial so be gentle. Comments will be most greatly appreciated and welcomed.

Requested by _milz_ from this post.

First I start off with this picture of Emilie that I got from Lost Media . Usually I like to work with pictures of higher resolution, but since I was too lazy to look for one I used this one. Now I cropped, resized and sharpened it once since the original was already sorta sharpened.

Now that we have our base we can start playing around with it. We duplicate the base and set it to Soft Light Opacity 100%

I think she looks a bit too pale so I add a peachy gradient to give her skin some glow and set it so Burn Opacity 100%

Next I add another gradient and set that to Burn Opacity 100%

I like to add a lot of color gradients to the icon to make the colors pop out. So next I add another one and set it Burn Opacity 22%
to

I also try to incorporate colors that are already in the icon and since Emilie is holding a purple flower I use this purple gradient and since the color is really heavy I set to Burn and lower the Opacity to 8%

But I don't want the icon too dark so I brighten her up by using a light pink gradient and setting it to Soft Light Opacity 100%
to

Next I add this gradient and set it to Exclusion Opacity 100%
to

Now I didn't want the icon to be too white so I add another gradient and again set it to Exclusion but change the Opacity to 10%
to

I add this gradient again set to Soft Light at 10%
to

Now the icon is complete and you can finish here if you want, or add some text and you're done. But I wanted my icon textless and I decided to bring out Emilie's eyes a bit more. So I added a New Raster Layer (Layers>New Raster Layer) and with my Airbrush tool I colored in her eye with the color #40FFFF. I know it looks a bit weird, but set the layer to Color and you can change the Opacity to your liking. Since I wanted her eyes to pop out but be very subtle I left the Opacity at 12%.

and Voìla your icon is done, now sometimes your icon can come out a bit too blury like this one below.

You can do three things to fix that.

A)Adjust>Sharpness>Sharpen

to A.

B)Duplicate your icon and Adjust>Sharpness>Sharpen (or Sharpen More) and then play around with the Opacity depending on how you want the icon to come out. I used Sharpen More and changed the Opacity to 38% at Normal.

to B.

Or the last and most comsuming method C)Duplicate your icon Adjust>Sharpness>Sharpen (or Sharpen More) and then use the Soften Brush to soften the areas you want. I used it on her face and on her hand.

to C.

Orignally I stoped after I brighten her eye, but since the question for crispness was asked I added the last bit. Hope you enjoyed the tutorial. =D
