| About: | Hi, everyone. I thought I should say something significant when opening the community. Then I realized that wanting to "say something significant" was freezing me into inactivity. So in keeping with the reasons I started this community anyway, screw that! I'm just going to be honest. Significance and elegance can come later, right now I just need to get it out there. I hope that anyone and everyone that joins this community can feel the same. We don't need to turn this into yet another place we worry about: should I post this, is it good enough, am *I* good enough........etc. Let's forget being "good enough"! Let's forget being eloquent or noteworthy, or even "good" or "nice.........whatever those words mean. Let's just be honest. The reason I started this community can be found here and in a thousand scattered pieces across my life. Ultimately, I realized I can't do it alone, nor do I want to. I hope that this can be a place we can stop being alone when it comes to our creative struggles. I want this to be a place you can share your struggles, your triumphs, your failures, your silliness, your seriousness, you depths and your shallows. I want this to we can be completely creatively honest with each other, without fear of judgment or competition. I want us to keep each other accountable, to lift each other from the mires of discouragement, depression, and fear. To help each other smash our creative blocks into a fine powder and toss it to the four winds. A format I think might be helpful for this endeavor is The Artist's Way; a workbook/encouragement/ 12-step program for "recovering creatives". I know some of you have already gone through the book, but are eager to do so again. I know some of you, (LIKE ME) have started it and stopped, because something was blocking you. Some of you have heard of it, and are curious. These are the reasons I'm thinking this would be a helpful format to use for this group. That, and the author (Julia Cameron) works in a lot about life in general and spirituality and how it affects our art in an incredibly helpful and all inclusive way that somehow manages to appeal to everyone from Pagans to Buddists to Christians to Atheists. HOWEVER. I don't want people to get stuck in thinking they can't be active in the group if they don't want to work through the Artist's Way. This is OUR group, whoever joins, and anyone can use it in whatever way is best for that individual. ALSO. This is not a group for only "serious" artists/writers/musicians/actors/whatever. That means ANYONE who acknowledges they have a creative side can post about anything they do that's creative. This means ANYTHING! Journal entries, poetry, sidewalk chalk, essays, fan-fiction, fan-art, remixes, compositions, scribbles, cosplay, photography, cooking, crafts, gardens, wanderings, ponderings, scripts, screenplays, doodles, icons, photo shoots, ANYTHING. If it's part of your creative life, if you want to share it, if you want feedback on it, bring it here. Oh, and that's another thing I see as being fairly important. I want this is be a community, a society, not just a showcase. Let's give each other feedback! We all want it, so lets give it! The more we give, the more we can get. Let's form creative friendships, accountability, and lines of encouragement. Let's form mentorships and partnerships. And, most of all, let's not be alone. Sometimes creative blocks, set-backs, and discouragements (or even just plain old laziness) can seem too huge, ugly and scary to face. But together, we can beat the demons. Are you with me? | |
