Sloan show reports [11 Oct 2008|12:32am]

[ music | something on Chris's computer ]

Well, I just typed this up for [info]snowsuitsound and now I'm posting it here, mostly for my own records, but uh, you can read it if you're curious or if you're one of the couple of people who actually like them.

Sorry for the late report guys, I've been sick in bed since just after the shows. Anyway, Sloan was amaaaaaaaaazing as per usual in Portland and Seattle. The new stuff was rockin' and they pulled out some killer old stuff ("UNDERWHELMED"! "SNOWSUIT SOUND"! OMGOMGOMG.) Over the two shows, they played stuff from every album except Pretty Together, maybe they hate it as much as I do. They even mixed up the setlist some at the second show cos we told Chris we would be there again. Also, "Before I Do" rocks out a lot more live than I would have expected, and you know, I would think I would be sick of "Money City Maniacs" and "Penpals" by now cos they've played them at I think every show I've been to but they are so fucking awesome live that I just can't be. Oh also the opening band, The Golden Dogs, were very cool too, people should check them out.

We talked to Chris after both shows. *swoonswoonswoon* At the Seattle show I got him to sign the two most recent and he said they were both "very worthwhile albums" so I told him that Twice Removed used to be my favourite album but now it's Never Hear the End of It and he said something about how "as we get further away from Twice Removed we seem to be getting further away from what people love about it." Then he said he's really into The Kinks these days so we talked about The Kinks a bit and that was cool. He said their lyrics are a lot more interesting than The Beatles but The Beatles have better production. He was also all startled by my copy of Parallel Play because it's the American one, not the Canadian, and apparently the colours are a little different? But he said he liked it and it was "punchier."

We also got to talk to Andrew for a bit after the second show. He had been wearing these really interesting t-shirts with stuff drawn on them and he told me that he does them all himself. "I have a lot of free time and a lot of blank t-shirts." He was happy that I appreciated his Orwell reference in "The Dogs." He also said that Never Hear the End of It is his favourite album too. No Jay and Patrick either night sadly.

Setlists! )

I took a bunch of pictures both nights--you can see all of them on my Flickr. My boyfriend also has a bunch on his site. He put a few videos on Youtube as well. I made a video of "Underwhelmed" but I was bouncing around so much I don't think it came out very well. Plus, half of it is sideways because Chris turned my camera around in the middle of it for some reason?

Friday Five and survey thing [10 Oct 2008|09:29pm]

[ music | The Golden Dogs - Life on the Line | Powered by Last.fm ]

I had a sidecar for the first time tonight and it was yummy. I think it will be a new go-to drink along with mojitos and amaretto sours. Then I talked about politics with Chris and had a bunch of coffee at Sureshot so I am a little wooooooo right now. I want to write something but I think we're going to watch a movie in a few minutes. We are going through all the Star Wars movies in order (chronological story order, not release order). It is nice to have someone to ask questions during the prequels because they get rather confusing in spots with all the political maneuvering. Also he has these fan edits that take out most of the stoopy parts. Also I know what the PERFECT Christmas gift to get him is but it's still a ways off, bah. At least during November I will be distracted by NaNo so hurry up and get here already, November!

Friday Five:
1. What is the one most important thing by your side right now? Uh, as in literally right next to me in the room here? My computer, and my books, and my camera, and my journal.
2. Why is it so important? My computer because it is my only way of interacting with other humans, pretty much, my books because, well, they're MY BOOKS, my camera and my journal because I feel like if I don't document everything it didn't really happen.
3. Can you live without it? No. I honestly don't think I could, especially my journal and my books.
4. What is the one thing you can't live without? Didn't I just answer that? And animals. I need to have animals around. And music. Of course.
5. Who is the one person you can't live without? Chris. Not John, anymore. I used to always think it was him but I've been living without him for quite awhile, haven't I?

Friend's List Mix V.1 [10 Oct 2008|09:05pm]

smoofy
So for those of you who contributed to my last post asking for fav. songs, I created a mix in seeqpod of all the songs you recommended. In the process, I've learned that you are all very interesting and (with exception to a few) somewhat depressed people- but with good taste in tunes. For anyone who didn't get to contribute, just comment to this post with your favorite song (of the moment) and artist.

[ music | Coldplay - Viva la Vida ]

I should be sleeping 'cause tomorrow I have an early class, but, here I am, working, as if that was the only thing I could do out of my life. What have I turned into? I can hardly remember the days back in school when I didn't care for studying and all I did was writing, doing handcrafts and playing with my Barbies.

Those were the good times.

Anyways, I have this class where I 'm being taught to paint in photoshop with digital tables. Maybe you all know how to do this, but I didn't, and now... well, I can do something out of it. And I wanted to show you -since I hardly post uni-related stuff 'cause I'm lazy.

Without the rough drawing I made first.

Send your name around the Earth on NASA'S Glory mission

WASHINGTON – Members of the public can send their names around Earth on NASA's Glory satellite, the first mission dedicated to understanding the effects of particles in the atmosphere and the sun's variability on our climate.

The "Send Your Name Around the Earth" Web site enables everyone to take part in the science mission and place their names in orbit for years to come. The Web site, where participants can submit their information, is located at:

http://polls.nasa.gov/utilities/sendtospace/jsp/sendName.jsp

Participants will receive a printable certificate from NASA and have their name recorded on a microchip that will become part of the spacecraft. The deadline for submitting names is Nov. 1, 2008.

The Glory satellite will allow scientists to measure airborne particles more accurately from space than ever before. The particles, known as "aerosols," are tiny bits of material found in Earth's atmosphere, like dust and smog.

"Undoubtedly, greenhouse gases cause the biggest climatic effect," said Michael Mishchenko, the Glory project scientist at NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York. "But the uncertainty in the aerosol effect is the biggest uncertainty in climate at the present."

Glory will carry two scientific instruments, the Aerosol Polarimetry Sensor, or APS, and the Total Irradiance Monitor, or TIM, and two cameras for cloud identification. The APS instrument will help quantify the role of aerosols as natural and human-produced agents of climate change more accurately than existing measurement tools. The TIM instrument will continue 30 years of measuring total solar irradiance, the amount of energy radiating from the sun to Earth, with improved accuracy and stability. Understanding the sun's energy is an important key to understanding climate change on Earth.

Glory is scheduled for launch in June 2009 from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. Glory will orbit as part of the Afternoon Constellation, or "A-Train," a series of Earth-observing satellites. The A-Train spacecraft follow each other in close formation, crossing the equator a few minutes apart shortly after 1:30 p.m. local time each day. The A-Train orbits Earth once every 100 minutes.
