Temptation

I've always wanted to write a story where the villain offers the hero a deal, and the hero takes it. Usually they don't, but wouldn't you think the temptation was killer?

Questions on POV

My novel uses mixed POV. I'm currently re-writing the beginning, and I noticed a problem.

Although the first scene is written in the protagonist's POV, most of the beginning of the story is told in the POV of a second main character.

This is how the first chapter will probably look:

Scene One (2500 words) -- protagonist

Scene Two (1500 words) -- 2nd character

Scene Three (1000 words) -- 2nd character

Scene Four (500-1000 words) -- 2nd character

Scene Five (2000-3000 words) -- protagonist

Do you think clustering the 2nd character's scenes like this will cause a problem (such as by drawing confusion about the identity of the protagonist?) I'm considering whether or not I could combined the 3rd and 4th scenes in order to fix this.

In general, what is your opinion of mixing point of view? Do you have any "rules" about how this should be done?

Last Saturday, I'm happy to announce, the first Chapter of Guardians went live. You can go to http://www.guardiansnovel.com to hear it!

So far it's gotten rave reviews. I was on Jackie Kessler's "Cat and Muse". Karen Syd from Echelon Press recommended it.

I would love to know what you think! Don't be shy.

Promoting the work of Adam P. Knave, [info]murnkay

One of my favorite things in my reading and writing life is learning the back story of a particular project. The writer in me is taking notes, comparing processes, and remembering to hope. The fan in me is just excited to have that personal touch. Stories are personal. Writing is something you do alone. The writer has a connection to the work. When that writer then shares the how, the why, and sometimes the feelings behind it, the reader feels a deeper sense of connection to the work as well. At least, that is how it works for me.

Adam P. Knave is kind enough to give us such a candid glimpse behind the scenes of his latest release. I am linking the related entries via his tag to share with you here. Scroll all the way to the bottom and work your way back up. You get to read a series of three posts discussing his thoughts on the work. Then you see his release post and a finally a pic of his books fresh off the press. I love that part!Come on. Read a little further. Please. )

Promoting the work of a good friend

In March [info]mmerriam announced the release of You Don't Know What You've Got: Tales of Loss and Dispossession . I went back to Amazon to check on it today. The price has dropped which means you get an even better deal. I wanted to also take a look at the reviews. There is only one so far. This reviewer mentions that marketing stories as a collection dealing with loss and dispossession during these tough times might not be the best plan. I disagree. While many of us seek fantasy fiction for the escape, we gain a sense of empowerment in watching the characters we love overcome obstacles, hardship. Beyond that, remember misery loves company. Some of us just like to know we aren't alone when facing tough times. That can be just as important as a book offering a great laugh. The reviewer was a tough critic but gave Mike's story a shining review and the anthology a 4 out of 5. Not too shabby!

I am taking from Mike's post here, but I wanted to give you a little information on the book and his story in his own words.More behind the jump. )

A new writing experiment / challenge - 52

http://52.carpetempus.com/

There is a saying that there is a novel in each of us. I am not sure if that is true, or not, but what I do know is that I 'think' that there is a novel - maybe more than one - inside of me. The problem is that it can't get out. It isn't for lack of trying, of course, but I have this wonderful problem that I like to call 'procrastination' ... the good thing is that I have been reliably informed that I am not the only sufferer of that disease (sounds better that way, I find 'problem' is too weak a word! ;o) ) and that all struggling writers have much more struggling than actual writing.

So I decided to do something about it ... I decided to procrastinate, some more, and take my mind of the novel (or novels) that is/are trying to emulate 'Prison Break' (without the aid of a wonderful back tattoo, of course) and escape, and instead focus on something both easier and harder at the same time.

Writing a short story - actually writing fifty two short stories ... one a week for fifty two weeks.

I am going to attempt to write a short story (minimum of 1000 words - less, obviously, if it is a poem) every week for fifty two weeks. I am going to do it publically, and post the results for everyone to see (thus ensuring that I am either shamed into doing it or have my failure very evident to all ;o)

Madness?

Perhaps - but it will also be a challenge, fun and - if it works - could even give me the basis for the novel (or novels ... did I mention that there may be more than one?) while giving me both a chance to craft my writing practically and often, and build up a portfolio.

That is what 'this' is ... and, for the record, you are free to join me in this. Simply email me at 52@carpetempus.com with some brief details about you (name, age, where you are from and why you want to do this) and I will set you up an account.

If you post one story, or the full fifty two, you will at least have written something ... and that is a good thing! ;o)

Feel free to pass this on to anyone that you think may be interested as it would be nice not to do this alone ;o)

New Angellus Journals

Just a bit behind but the Angellus Journals: 4 was released last Sunday. AJ:5 will be up on Monday!

From the Podcast Novel: Guardians by Kimi Alexandre here's your chance to ask Kimi, her characters, or her cast any question you'd like!

Who knew that a trip to a museum benefit to guard an underwear model could change a girl’s whole life? Raegan Fischer stepped into a closet but didn’t quite come out alone. Now she’s part of a secret but no one let her in on the rules. It’s set to put her smack in the middle of a celestial police investigation she’s not equipped to deal with.

In order to protect her sanity, her body, and people she cares about, she’s going to have to figure out who isn’t what they appear to be, play a game of spiritually enlightened catch up, and track down an artifact that holds a dangerous key to the whole thing.
