Carly Smithson was born on September 12, 1983 in Dublin, Ireland. She moved to the United States with her father at age 13 to pursue a career in music, and was signed to MCA Records. She released her debut album, Ultimate High, in 2001 under her maiden name, Carly Hennessy.

In 2005, Carly auditioned for the fifth season of American Idol. She made it to the Hollywood round, but because of complications with her visa she was disqualified. Two years later she auditioned again, and made it all the way to the Top 6. After the show's finale, Carly completed the American Idols LIVE! 2008 tour with her fellow Top 10 contestants, which made over 50 stops nationwide.

After the Idol tour, Carly hit the studio to work on a new demo. However, Carly decided to take her musical career in a different direction. She announced in mid-2009 that she was to become the lead singer of We Are The Fallen, a hard-rock band comprised of herself and former members of multiplatinum-selling, Grammy-winning rock group Evanescence. We Are The Fallen released their debut single, "Bury Me Alive", on June 22, 2009 at www.wearethefallen.com.

Carly lives in San Diego, California with her husband, Todd Smithson, who owns and manages a tattoo shop called Nothing Sacred Tattoo.
