A suitable Jamie?

Hey,

I'm a newb. I've only just finished Outlander and can't believe I didn't discover it earlier, but in a way I'm glad I didn't as now I don't have any long waits for books 2-6. :) Bonus. Days later and I still can't stop flashing back to certain scenes/moments in the book. It was wonderful. It made me laugh, cry (lots) and fall in love with both Claire and Jamie. Finding out through reviews of the following books in the series that they spend 20 years apart made me so depressed! GUH. Life is so short to begin with, let alone having lost 20 years of being together! My heart aches just to think about it. :(

So anyway, reason for this post

I just wondered what people thought about the following guy as a possibly well suited look-alike for Jamie? And I don't mean to play him in a possible tv series or whatever (cuz he's an actor from the good ole days and is no longer with us unfortunately). I was just trying to think of big red headed actors I'd seen and this guy came to mind. Bonus points if you recognize the movie. :p :p

According to the latest post on Herself's blog (which can be added as a feed to your flist, but don't ask me how, 'cause I don't remember HOW I did it), the following is Jamie:

Yep.

Oh, goodness! That's bigger than I thought it would be (*SNORT*), so I'll put it under a cut. That preview feature comes in so handy.

Release Date?

So, I don't want to get any hopes up, but I was wondering if anyone else saw the new paperback of "Lord John and the Brotherhood of the Blade." There's an excerpt from "An Echo in the Bones" at the end with the stated release date of Fall 2009. Now, I just went and looked at DianaGabaldon.com and see no mention of this fact. Is it a case of an over happy publisher, or is there merit to that date? That would be awesome if it was true. Any insight would be appreciated, and apologies if this has already been mentioned here before.

Voyages of the Artemis

I don't know if anyone else reads DG's blog, but I just started reading it. It's great for aspiring writers because she really talks about her process, but it does have the occasional, low-spoiler excerpt from Echo. I commented on her latest entry, something beyond just the squeeing that I am tempted to type everytime I read something of hers (yes I am aware that I am a ridiculous fangirl). And she responded! I got so excited, I'm such a dork.

She also posted a great essay on "Butt Cooties" that is non-Outlander related, but in her humorous style. I think she's such a great writer, no matter what she writes about.

North American stone circle discovered... at the bottom of Lake Michigan

It was while scanning for a shipwreck that he came across a line of standing stones stretching some 800 metres across the lake bed. His team then noticed a stone circle, at which point they dispatched divers to examine the stones, which are submerged in 40 metres of water. Around 200 metres from the circle, they found a stone that appeared to have some man-made carvings on it.

Jamie Fraser Fanart

Hey, everyone! I've been lurker in this community for a while (commented on a few topics) and I thought I'd share a painting of Jamie a finished recently. It didn't say anything about fan illustrations in the rules, so I'm guessing that there's nothing against it? If there is and I didn't see it, my apologies in advance.

Hope you enjoy! Obviously, comments are lovely, as well as critiques for those who would like to offer them. The only thing I ask is that you refrain from remarks like: "He doesn't look anything like I imagined him." or "You got it all wrong, he should have a shorter nose and darker hair." This is my interpretation of Jamie and I'm just sharing because hopefully some of you will appreciate my drawing or take it with a grain of salt =]

The background image is credited to a website off of Google. I have not been able to locate the original photographer, unfortunately. And I'm sorry if his plaid is incorrect, it was the best quality pattern I could find. I might paint it later if I get the chance. That said, if anyone knows of a more accurate pattern then please send it my way!

Cheers!

Raymond question

I just stumbled upon an old post of mine in my journal where I'd re-read A Breath of Snow and Ashes and pondered about the part in which Mrs. Wilson miraculously resuscitates and a sin-eater comes and Claire gets a funny feeling about him. She mentions he has amber eyes and I wondered... could he possibly be Raymond, her mentor from Paris who teaches her about her gift for time-traveling? Could he have come to see how she fared? I don't really remember much from Voyager (I think she met him in Voyager...?) but did he have amber eyes? Oh, I really hope we see more of Raymond (especially if he's the limping sin-eater!) in the next book.

Actually, do you think he might make an appearance again?

Question for those who have visited Culloden Battlefield:

Did you actually see a "Fraser" clan stone? I looked, but many of the stones were so badly worn that they were illegible. On top of that, it was raining (surprise!) and we were on a tight schedule and had to get back to the tour bus on time.

I didn't have time to go through the museum, though I got pics of the statues of the Bonnie Prince and the Duke.

It was frustrating, to look forward to that adventure for so long and then to be hurried through it.

Question for fanfic (and other) writers:

I've seen input from time to time from folks who are themselves writers.

I belong to the local chapter of Romance Writers of America. In hanging out with this bunch, I read a lot of stuff by romance authors (surprise!!)

I recently won a trilogy by Nora Roberts in a raffle, and I spent the last few days reading her books. Nora is more prolific, more well-known, and more formulaic than DG.

I've been trying to analyze the differences.

What, exactly is it, that makes DG stand head and shoulders above Nora in storytelling? I know she uses a much more complex vocabulary. Her humor, mainly seen through Claire's eyes, is much funnier - and raunchier!. The progression of her narrative seems much more linear.

I'd love to hear what the rest of you have to offer about the differences between these two writers. As for me, I'll take DG any time, but Nora has sold a LOT more books.

Historic Scotland Map

I'm really looking forward to my annual pilgrimage to Scotland in July. All I know for sure about this year's trip is that I'll be seeing Leonard Cohen at Edinburgh Castle on July 16, and that I will be visiting St Andrews for two or three days. Apart from that, I have nearly three weeks to play with. That being the case, my adventurous spirit has reared its wandering head, and I am thinking of striking out into the countryside on foot for at least a few days. I was wondering if any of you fine folks could recommend a truly awesome map/atlas of Scotland with lots of detail and sites of historic interest marked down? Not just standing stones and so forth, but the full history of Scotland's landscape. Anything?

Help!

Does anyone know if the quote Diana attributes to a contemporary of the Duke of Cumberland's is a real quotation?

It's this one:
"He created a desert and called it peace." I'm writing a paper, and it would be great to include this, but I can't if I don't cite it. I haven't found it any of the sources I have that I got from her.

Yes. That's right. I'm writing a history term paper inspired by Diana Gabaldon. :-P I'm such a nerd.

Google only turns up blogs, one of whom belongs to a totally hosed girl's MySpace, and she's dating a guy named James. It was cool to find another hoser, but not academic. Anyone?

ETA: I didn't think it was in the Outlandish Companion, but it was! And yes, Tacitus said it first, but a contemporary really did say it. I'm just going to cite the Companion--it's not academic, but that part IS nonfiction. Thanks for the quick answers!
