Craig Beats Conan!
From today's USA Today:

Ferguson tops O'Brien in viewership for first time

By David Bauder, The Associated Press
NEW YORK — Recently sworn-in U.S. citizen Craig Ferguson is being embraced by his new countrymen: The late-night comic hit a ratings milestone last week with his first victory over NBC's Conan O'Brien.
The CBS Late Late Show averaged more viewers than O'Brien's Late Night (1.88 million to 1.77 million) for the first week during which they each competed with all-original shows since Ferguson started in January 2005.

It caps a slow and steady climb for Ferguson and raises a red flag for future Tonight show host O'Brien, although NBC says it is still happy with O'Brien's audience.

"He's getting looser and looser all the time and for the last few months it's clear that he's having such a good time that you can't resist it as a viewer," said veteran late-night hand Peter Lassally, Ferguson's executive producer.

Ferguson, a Scotsman, passed an American citizenship test and was formally sworn in on Feb. 1. He'll be host of the annual White House correspondents' dinner in Washington later this month, a high-profile gig for a comic.

Although Ferguson had slowly become more competitive with O'Brien in the ratings, the writers strike was crucial to the surge, said producer Michael Naidus.

"It was a tough thing but for us it just let us play with the show in a looser way," Naidus said. "We threw out everything and now just have our writers doing a comedy show."

The strike also put a brighter spotlight on late-night programming and Ferguson benefited from the attention, with correspondents from newspapers and magazines writing flattering stories about him, Naidus said.

NBC acknowledged Ferguson's victory but noted O'Brien — the designated successor to Jay Leno when Leno steps down next year — still led among viewers aged 18-49, the youthful demographic the network bases its advertising sales on. Among the younger half of that demographic, O'Brien gets more viewers than David Letterman, NBC said.

NBC also noted that CBS got a boost by having all-original shows at the 10 p.m. hour last week, possibly increasing its audience in late-night, while NBC was still in reruns.

excellent :) I think Craig's show is strong in the 3 main areas: monologue, "bits", and interviewing. Conan just doesn't resonate with me as much - I like him fine, but Craig is my "tall late night guy" of choice :)

See "All 99 News Items" on Craig pwn-ing Conan, per Google...

So... at least one of these items claims that Conan is all set to be Leno's replacement.

Oh yeah? When did this come about?
And why not Jon Stewart (who, to me, is another Johnny Carson)...?

This was announced by Leno in 2004.

Let me ask you this: as a fan of Jon, if you were to see him take over a late night spot on a broadcast network, would you want him to continue the format of The Daily Show or revise his role as a normal talk show host like on The Jon Stewart Show? (btw, if this were a few years ago, I wouldn't even consider Jon a proprietor of The Daily Show, but now that we're nearing his 10th anniversary on the program I think Comedy Central would probably let him do whatever he wants with it, even though transferring it to another network would harm them considerably.)

The idea of The Daily Show somehow transferring to a network which also broadcasts "real" news programs is kind of mind-boggling to me. I think their freedom is a result of the fact that they are on a network with no credibility to lose, and if they were to switch to a serious network they would have to change a lot of their format. Do you disagree? I have to note that on the other hand, I don't see it as a complete impossibility, because it's not as though news networks themselves are unbiased.

Thanks for the link. Well, there's no accounting for the taste and judgment of broadcast network bigwigs. Ratings, shmatings.

As to format, to me at least, The Daily Show is basically mostly political, with a little cultural/social thrown in ~ and The Tonight Show has always been a general "everything" show. I'm a relatively new viewer (for about a year; I started out watching Stephen Colbert) so I'm not that familiar with the old Jon Stewart Show. But as I said, he'd make a great successor to Johnny Carson ~ I'm neither a Leno nor a Conan fan. NBC really should have replaced Johnny with Letterman, IMHO.

If Jon Stewart's old talk show resembled The Tonight Show With Johnny Carson ~ then yeah, that's what I mean. If it didn't ~ well then, I think Jon is quite up to the task of creating a new breed of format.

I'll tell you one thing, though (after searching just now, I found this) ~ he will never be like this again (1993). He couldn't be.

Thank ye gods.
I mean......like, Fonzie kept popping into my head, and I had to rub my eyes to see Jon! ;)

Ah, ok. It's interesting for me to imagine Jon hosting The Tonight Show. I wouldn't compare The Jon Stewart Show to The Tonight Show too much, aside from the fact that they are both standard talk shows, but from my understanding TJSS was only canceled because the network executives at Paramount kind of had it in for Jon -- the show wasn't altogether unsuccessful. However, Jon has gone through a drastic personality change since he first began hosting The Daily Show. He's absolutely not the person he used to be, so I can't gauge at all whether he'd be successful going back to the format of a regular talk show. I've followed him for so many years but I feel like I know nothing about him now. What I'd really like to see is him do a guest hosting gig on a regular program, but I don't see him having time for such a thing, unfortunately. I don't think he'd be interested in taking over for Conan when Conan succeeds Leno, but I'm not really sure about that. I'm a big Conan fan and I've been following the developments of his taking over The Tonight Show, but I haven't heard anything yet about who will get his old slot -- whoever it is, I just pray it isn't Carson Daly. I don't even understand how his show is still on.
