Suggestions on how to do a steampunk costume on the cheap?
21st-Sep-2008 11:53 pm - Hello, New to Crafty Goths!
Hi there. As the title states I am new to Crafty Goths. I started out crafty gothy clothing/accessories about 6 years ago when I made an awesome Nightmare Before Christmas Jack & Sally costume for my friend and I to prance around town in! No one knew who we were.

People kept calling my friend "Beetlejuice" and they had NO idea who I was!

More recently I have been doing lots of screenprinting/clothes modification related crafting.
Once I get pictures I'll post them up!

7th-Sep-2008 06:50 pm - fetish/victoriana questions
trashy5
hay guise, I want to make an outfit that combines some kind of Victorian/egl/steampunk-ish look with fetish for the Folsom Street Fair coming up in a month. Any suggestions?

1. I know a corset is a must. And beyond that I'm amassing a boatload of poofy black skirts and petticoats. Also a couple of "vintage" proto-egl nightgowns I've been wanting to make something out of. Maybe something a little distressed?

2. I'm adverse to putting goggles on my head. unless they are really cool looking. and I might wear cat ears anyway

3. Ditto anything brass.

4. I might consider dreadlocks. I have some cheap dread ponyfalls but they are not enough. Is there a tutorial for making them out of yarn?

5. I've got a big piece of black lace fabric I got from Goodwill, it looks like it was already cut for use in a costume one time and then donated. It's big enough to make a nice veil or shawl out of it. Any suggestions for making either?

6. For whatever reason, Folsom always happens duting the hottest, sunniest month in San Francisco. So probably any "fetish" fabrics are right out of the question - latex, pvc, leather... except boots I guess.

7. I also think I need a parasol. Where can I get a nice Victorian-looking one?

x-posted a whole buncha places, sry.

and now a question!

as we all now, Halloween is coming up. i have grown tired of the usual vampire witch. i am thinking of looking like a Rag doll or a Marionette. making the costumes wont be hard. where do you go to find a Marionette controller?

vampire

I made these costumes for Halloween, a Demon Priest and his Vampoire Bride, then with a few new accessories I used them as Serpent Sorcerer and Sorceress costumes for a Renaissance Faire in the Spring.  My husband even used the Cassock for a Back To School Zombie Party this month

Hi! I just joined today! I have an idea of a Queen of the Damned costume for Halloween, but I need ideas on how to create it! Any help would be wonderful...

I am a bit top heavy in the chest area, anyone have any idea how to create the chest piece that Aaliyah wears in Queen of the Damned?

Hi. I do I bit of everything and like the goth look though I wouldn't say I am goth. I like way too many things to fit into just one group.

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone could help me with a sewing question. Is there some trick to sewing with satin? I don't have a serger and everytime I try, it ends up fraying down to the stichiching and then tearing.

Here's a few things I've made. Sorry for the poor quality pictures.

haha, yay! first post *aside from intro in the comments thing*

so I'm just looking for some opinions --- my sister and I go nuts for halloween. This year we're doing a witch theme *we think* but we're still uncertain. so there's the two of us, plus her gf and my bf. I can make the costumes or we can buy, but we have nothing else to go on.

We need ideas soon so we can start preparing and making everything - but we're both out of ideas!

any tips for costumes and/or props would be awsome. any sites etc. would be great too

*note, i'm doing some carvings now so il post some pic.s when they're done ---- trying to find a decent pic of a human skull for refference, know any good ones?

Yomiicon

Nice to find this community featured and see that it has generated some interest here.  Goffs, I think, have to be crafty sorts with outfits and accessories.  As a guy I find many things in shops are the same sh*t in different shops and you have to look far and wide to find things original, unique and interesting....otherwise we'd all look like goths out of boxes...or, of course the other avenue is to get crafty and customise, design and make your own bits and peices.

Here's a couple of things I have made

For the purpose of a Steampunk look (dare I post something Steamy here when there are so many other communities for that!) I made these brass goggles and brass handgun.  I'm the one kneeling in the front.  I took the design from a pair a friend made and tweaked it some.  The gun is a mere waterpistol but with bits added, and a paint job.

Also, I designed this Bondage Body Armour and had it made by a Lady Leathersmith of my acquaintance who normally made items for the purpose of restraining and hurting people...She was happy to take the commission and, I think, did me proud...although she commented that if I came back to have another made she woudl charge me twice as much.  This item makes a great Fetish Top, and it's also been worn to make comtemporary/sci fi looks and can even be used to make a fantasy armour look (as illustrated)....this item remains one of my all time favourites and appears to be virtually indestructable!

cool alice pic
hi, everybody.  thanks for letting me join.

here's something a did a few weeks ago. . . it's a mini alice cooper.  he's between 6 and 7 inches tall.  i wanted to make a friendlier cooper so that's the reason for the big eyes a little smile.

also, i make my halloween costume every year and the lj-cut below has a picture of my version of a joker costume.  i wanted to make a feminine combination the new joker with the one from batman the animated series-- kinda like if harley decided to dress up like the joker. of course, i still need to make spats but i'm not sure how to do that yet.  the with the exception of the tie, shirt, and lining for the jacket, eveything is out of t-shirt.

3rd-May-2008 09:19 am - Victorian bustle how-to
can anyone give me a quick and (fairly) simple how-to as far as sewing a Victorian-style bustle dress? i'm hoping to make one for a function coming up toward midsummer (although it will hopefully be closer to July). i've looked at commercially available patterns and unfortunately it's pretty damn impossible to find anything near enough to the size that i currently wear. i found a gorgeous dress online, but it's $1160, and that's in standard sizing i believe - to get it made in my size, i'd have to take out a small loan i'm sure!

i've also been poking about online. unfortunately the Internet is a wealth of imagery but not a lot of cohesive patternmaking information in this area. what i'm specifically trying to find is how to make a bustled skirt (it will be part of a dress). i want the bustle to be part of the skirt, not something worn underneath to give the illusion of fullness. as far as bustle style, i'm wanting to make something from the Natural Form Era (c. 1877-1882). i have image links on my home computer - i'm currently at work.

i've been making and using my own patterns for many years, but never anything with a bustle so i wouldn't even know where to begin. i even tried draping it on a form, but i can't get the yardage to where it doesn't look like the fabric threw up on my ass.

thanks much.

Together Forever
Hey all, I need a favor. I'm doing a project on Colleen Atwood (costume designer), and I need to find clothing that was influence by her designs. The good part is (yay!) I'm allowed to use d.i.y. projects! That's where you guys come in. If you could send me pictures of clothing that was influenced by any of these movies:

Movies )

Just as a highlight, these movies include:
Sweeney Todd, Mission Impossible: III, Memoirs Of A Geisha, A Series Of Unfortunate Events, Big Fish, Chicago, Sleepy Hollow, Buddy, Mars Attacks!, That Thing You Do!, Little Women, Ed Wood, The Silence Of the Lambs, Edward Scissorhands, and Married to the Mob.

You can either reply here or e-mail them to me at SpydersKyss@yahoo.com.

Thanks so much!

Sky
Hello there.   I just joined this community a couple of days ago.  I thought I would share my most recent project, a pair of fingerless gloves that I made as part of a bellydance costume.  They were actually inspired by the buttons on them which are turn of the century glass buttons.  The lace is from a crochet pattern book of the same period.
