Birthday Present

First time poster, long time lurker.

My amazingly awesome wife, God bless her, made me a wonderful present for my birthday.

A bit of background: We have a office/study off the kitchen in our house. I sometimes call it my Geek Room. It holds my Dr. Who paraphernalia and other nerdly things. I've been wanting to isolate it so I could get some work done without having to ask folks to be totally quiet in the public half of the house. We thought French doors, perhaps?

Well, for my birthday my wife decided to make me a life-sized plywood cut-out of the TARDIS front doors--maybe to go with a 10th doc standee if she could find one cheap enough.

On a trip to Lowe's (a DIY store) scouting for supplies, she saw a pair of doors that were like shutters, and they opened like the TARDIS doors. Suddenly the project was upgraded. My friends Andrew, Kim, Andrew, Amanda, and wife all pitched in and I was one ecstatic, shocked, speechless birthday boy.

The Party Begins, but I have yet to see the AWESOME gift waiting for me. Oh, and notice my lame attempt to wrap our china cabinet to look TARDIS-esque to decorate for the party. I knew we were having a Dr. Who-themed party, but I didn't know what awaited me!

Crochet project WIP - Vortex Manipulator

After seeing some fan-made Vortex Manipulators recently, I got struck by the urge to make one myself. Leather wasn't an option, so I decided to crochet it :)

Current progress is over here, at my LJ. (Scan is ENORMOUS.) The yarn is Sirdar Denim Chunky, which makes a good, thick fabric, especially in double (single in USA instructions) crochet. More brown sections to make, including strap. Controls and screen will be sewn on beads and buttons.

Ok he's almost done! I realized, after carefully hand stitching the head and the eyes, that I had in fact put it upside down. (see icon) But I have run out of time and so he must remain not quite right for the Con.

Over all I think he came out pretty cute, but not as nice as I would have liked. The pattern for the main body was ok but the instructions for the head are impossible, and I do mean impossible! At first I though I was just being dumb, but after my mother looked at it and we both tried to make it work as written we came to the concultion it just could not be done . (I believe I called the pattern maker quite a few names the last few nights and none of them nice)

But anyway I think he will give everyone the idea of who he is and who I'm suppost to be. Picture under the cut (I only have a web camera so it's not very good) Now I have to go pack I have to be up in 6 hours! Hope I'll see some of you there! I'll be wearing My Sarah Jane costume on Saturday.

New member here, just wanted to post my incredible good fortune.

Not really a craft, but some people might find this helpful.

I was at my local Burke's Outlet and was completely shocked to see a brown suit with blue pinstripes. "Guwha?!" said I and checked the tag. $25 was hard to beat, so now it's hanging in my closet waiting for Dragon Con. XD It's a tad too big, and a woman's cut, but me and a friend have been taking it in and modifying it.

Still, it's prett good.

Burke's a bit of an odds and ends store, but someone might want to look, even to use the fabric for something else, it was a better find than I usually find.

TARDIS parts

im not too sure how relevant this is but i am watching some doctor who (of course!the one with the clock people) and there was a shot of the TARDIS inside (obviously) and I realised my mum un-knowingly bought a few TARDIS componants.

Im talking about the coloured globes present in the panels (and also in the panel of the spaceship they arrive on in the episode im watching). You can (could at least.i think they still sell them) buy these from IKEA!

we have them in our water feature. but any whovians who want a little bit of the TARDIS in thier room, these are a good thing to have!

Fandom + spinning = . . . ?

Hi, everyone! Long time lurker, first time posting one of my own projects . . .

I was out trawling LJ a couple days ago, and found the oddest crossover interest group: fandom_spinning, for people who are fans, and into handspinning fibers. Wow. Gotta love the internet and its niche groups. Well, case in point with this group, too . . . :D

Anyway, that inspired me to take some action figure pics with my own handspun yarn, and I thought I'd repost here.

Since I'm into spinning via historical reenactment and teaching, I'm working on simply getting techniques down, playing with various natural/historical dyestuffs, and the like, rather than designing "art" yarn per se -- but being a diehard Doctor Who fan, I have to admit one of the first things I thought after an indigo-dye experiment was that the resulting blues were remarkably TARDIS-y.

The Tenth Doctor agrees, and approves (New Zealand white wool, spun, plied and indigo dyed by me):

Meanwhile, Captain Jack Harkness is delighted by the camouflage opportunities of my (rather disorganized) yarn basket:

He spent most of my last trip cozied up there -- his job of being my travel mascot is a cushy one, and he knows it! :D

Anyway, that's my dose of strangeness for the day . . .

Also -- can anyone post or direct me to a link for a cross-stitch or needlepoint chart of the Seal of Rassilon?

The patterns I've found in the archive here are great, but I'm not sure I can convert them properly to something that would work on a larger scale, e.g. 200x200 stitches. The last time I needed to make a chart by myself, I used a pencil and graph paper -- if someone can point me to a better tool, I'd be grateful!

i am currently waiting on the wool for my gryffindor scarf(i told u im a nerd!) but when that it done i am making my tom-baker style doctor who scarf!

my mum (an avid knitter) is also v excited about this project as she grew up watching the doctors adventures!

and something tells me when my dad has finished shelves the extra wood will become a father-daughter project (namely some form of tardis!)

Oh! Please forgive me if I am doing this wrong! I was so excited by this community that I had to join live journal but do not understand what the heck I am doing.

There are so many wonderful ideas here! I have been working on a fleece Tardis pillow for my husbands birthday and as soon as I figure out how to show a photo I will.

Also, I went to World Market and found 95 million boxes of jelly babies. I think there had been some talk of locating them.

Tenth Doctor coat

Ok, so I saw a posting from last year on this community (Doctorwho community) about people trying to get Abbeyshot to produce a tenth doctor coat and everyone saying that it would cost to much.

I make coats. I don't do commissions or commercial production because I do not have the time, but I can produce professional looking long coats from patterns.

If people reply that they are interested, then I will keep this community updated on the progress of the coat and post tips and instructions to aid doctor who lovers in making their own coats. Everyone here needs to understand that sewing is NOT HARD given that one can follow the pattern instructions, cut straight lines, and acquire the proper tools. Far too few people sew today because they are warded off by how hard it seems or by looking at more complex garments. Sure, I can't sew Donna's wedding dress, but I can slap a coat together in no time flat - it's roughly 10 unique pieces of fabric that sew together with mostly straight lines.

The reply to this will have the initial project draft/setup. I hope it is appropriate to post this here - it's my first post on this community. Hi to everyone!

Dalek Costume Update

Ok, Here we are, and it is now almost September.....well we haven't had much time to work on this in over a month (and folks teased me for starting in July! Peshaw!)

We have finally had some time to actually work on the costume, so here are some pictures of the next step. We need to install the screening on the head, and paint the rest. Then we are going to install the eye stalk, plunger and ray gun. But still lots to do and September is just around the corner! The pictures don't really do it justice. For those of you who know me (and you know who you are!) you can avoid the spoilers under the cut and come see it in person!

I just have to share my latest project with someone :) As a last minute costume for Dragon Con I thought I would go as Sarah Jane, But I was worried people might not realize who I was so I decided to make myself a K-9 bag . Now it's not finished I still have to do the head and the shoulder strap but I was so thrilled with how the body of it came out that I had to share. I'm thinking the lettering is not quite right... what do y'all think? The Pattern is from The Doctor Who Pattern book

The first picture is the front, the second is with the flap open and the third is the side and back, sorry it's not standing straight , it's not so wrinkly in real life :)

Hi everyone!
Long time watcher, finally got around to making a LJ for myself so I could join in...

First, I'd just like to say: WOW! Wow, wow, wow!!! The things that everyone makes...just so amazing!!!! In fact, you all have inspired me to start to learn how to do crafts...I'm starting with crochetting right now, but I hope to learn how to knit as well.

Anywho, to start off, I have just got a kicker pair of shoes that I want to stencil something on...Their color reminded me of a certain something...;)

I'm thinking some sort of curling design, like on the old TARDIS key...but I can't find a stencil to use! Can anyone help me?

EDIT: Ok, after playing around with a few OTHER things, I finally fixed this up the best I can...ignore the link (can't figure out why it is listed here, but I think it has something to do with the blue link before the cut-away...) and click on that little sliver. The image you get to see has been sized down and is now internet-friendly. Thanks for bearing with all that jazz!

I've been working on the Dr. Who ABC's. I have A through E done, except for the French Nots, which I don't know how to do....yet!

Okay, it's nowhere NEAR finished, but I want to show everyone what I've been doing so far :D

I know Ten's read all the books (and the person I'm making this for is an HP fan), so I could just leave that alone. But I didn't:

Sorry, I'm the world's worst picture taker, but that is Ten up there! I used images found here to make a sticker sheet! Now, see that yellow page? The front and back covers are done in that and I didn't like them. So:

Not exactly TARDIS interior, but the colors are close-ish :D What else... oh!

See that little star there? I was originally going to leave it alone, because it doesn't completely clash with what I'm going with... but, since I put the stickers in the top corner of ever page, the top is now wider than the bottom. So:

Much thanks to my Mom who keeps giving me awesome ideas :D Anyway, logos were found here and sticker sheet can be found here.

To make the stickers I found some sticker paper for ink jet printers at my local box store. It was either with the rest of the printer paper or with the craft stuff... :D

Cuddly Evil

Dalek two has been completed, and Dalek Santa has been started in red and white, once finished it will be complete with santa hat :D I'm getting quicker at the bobbles as well, I managed to get up past the second round of bobbles while half watching the British Touring cars yesterday :)

I need to make one more in black with grey trimmings, and then look at making one in a beige cardigan. No, I don't know why either, but my friend has asked that if I decide to make her lovely other half one for Christmas, which I had already planned to do, could it come in a beige cardigan... so, where would I find a dalek sized cardigan pattern? And what colour scheme should a beige cardigan wearing dalek be in?

Once they are all complete and before I give any away I will be taking a picture of my army of cuddly evil, and probably making a new icon :D

Tardis Quilt!!!!!! (part 2)

So, I finished the actual Quilting part on my Quilt!

For those of you who didn't know, I made (am making?) a Tardis quilt to hang on my door this year at school.

So, here it is, followed by my attempts at instructions for anyone crazy enough (in a good way) to try it out themselves.

the whole thing is 81 inches tall by 32 inches wide- the size of my door at school.
the 'Police Public Call Box' sign is embroidered, while the sign on the door was printed using sew-in computer printer fabric.
the dooor handles and lock are made from a silver fabric i had lying around and stuffed, so they stick out a bit.

the backing will be the same fabric I used for the background of the Tardis Light.

I didn't really use a pattern, but here is what i used to make the quilt.
all the measurements below are for the finished size, for 1/2 inch seam allowances just add one inch to all the measurements. (or add 1/2 inch for 1/4 inch seam allowances)

2 1/2 yards blue
1/2 yard pale yellow
1/2 yard white
1/4 yard black
3/4 yard navy
1 yard blue for panels
1/2 yard for background (3 yards if using for backing as well)
2 1/2 yards backing (if not same as background)
2 1/2 yards batting/ poly fluff/ fleece for filler

the blue i used for panels was in between (colorwise) navy and the blue i used for the stripes
the broadcloth I used was fairly thin, so for the window panes and light I used white with yellow underneath
I wanted to have all the vertical stripes in one piece, so I ended up with a lot of extra blue fabric. One thing you could do if you didn't want to have a bunch of extra blue would be to use the same color blue for the panels as well as the stripes, and only use the navy on the panel borders.

first, I printed up the sign on the door using the computer printer paper and embroidered the police box sign.
the measurements for the finished sign are above, and the spacing for the Police box sign are as follows:

'POLICE'- 2 inches high x 9 inches long
'PUBLIC'- 1 inch high x 6 inches long
'CALL'- 1 inch high x 4 inches long (centered under PUBLIC)
'BOX'- 2 inches high x 5 inches long

Finished, it will measure
1 inch above and below lettering,
4.5 inches-POLICE-2 inches-PUBLIC CALL- 2 inches-BOX- 3.5 inches

i did the roof and light first in two pieces - the parts of the tardis sewn onto the background on their corresponding levels, then sewn onto the levels above and below , then the two halves sewn together up the middle.

next I took the roof section and sewed it onto the horizontal stripes below it until I got to the navy blue stripe beneath the Police box sign.

the windows were done in horizontal strips, pane-frame-pane-frame-pane, then sewn to the horizontal frame then the next row of panes, followed by the horizontal and then vertical navy edges.

the door sign was sewn to the horizontal paneling, then the vertical paneling, then the horizontal and vertical navy edges, the other five panels were sewn onto the horizontal edges, then the vertical ones.

next i sewed on the horizontal bars - bar-window-bar-sign-bar-panel-bar-panel-bar and bar-window-bar-panel-bar-panel-bar-panel-bar, leaving me with two long columns.

after that i sewed the vertical edge stripes together, and then to the outsides of the panel columns, then sewed the center stripes together and connected them to the panels.

lastly, i sewed the roof section to the top.

the little door handles are 3.5 inches tall, one is centered on the center stripe to the left of the panel on the level of the sign, the other is centered on the paneling next to the sign. the lock is 1 inch across and is centered on the same stripe as the first door handle, at the level of the bar below the sign.

because this will be hanging on my door, I will be making it so the area by the doorknob can be folded in and out for cuddling or hanging, but befoe i cut it i wanted to put up pictures for anyone who was interested. I plan to hang it using buttons sewn on the back, connected to string, connected to the little 3m adhesive hooks that can be removed easily because we can't do anything permanent to the rooms.
