Hi. Um. Quoting the ninth doctor, this group is absolutely, amazingly fantastic. I’ve been lurking, and seeing all these Daleks pop up, I finally decided to share what I’ve made.

Rose’s Wrist-warmers:

This is the result after doing battle with cables and double-pointed needles, both new challenges. After starting the first one around a dozen times, I finally got the hang of it. The second one went much faster.

Oh! This is the pattern I used.

I’m particularly proud of the thumbs, for some reason. ^__^

A Spiffy Hat of Rassilon:

Knit in Cascade 220, from this pattern. I can’t wait for the right weather to wear it, so that if I can see if there any other unrevealed Doctor Who fans lurking around!

From the side:

And a Dalek (!) from the Extermiknit pattern, which is absolutely wonderful. (To anyone else making one: stuffing it with rolled quilt batting worked way better than fiberfill. They turn out less....pudgy.) I carried it downtown to show my mum’s knitting group - one lady who watched Doctor Who in the Tom Baker days thought it was neat. Other than that, I probably just got some strange stares.

That’s all for now. Though I do have yarn ready for a start on a Season 12 scarf all set aside for a family trip. (That's my fourth thing - still in the planning stages.)

I’ll post it up as soon as I’ve got a start on it! Thanks for all the inspiration!

Evolution of a Dalek (Halloween Costume in July- YES!!)

Ok, so I have posted prototype 1. That was actually built in May when my son told me that he wanted to be Dalek Sec for Halloween. So, I have since improved on the idea. It is by no means DONE, and we are still working on it, but it will probably take us until October to finish with all the modifications and customizations that need to be done to allow him to move freely in the beast. However, this is prototype 2 with materials and pics. Remember, these are "works in progress" hopefully the finished product will be worth all the time and effort it has taken (and will take) for us to finish the darn thing! Thank goodness my daughter is going as something simple....ROSE!

Supplies:

6 sheets of foam board (the large ones)
1 roll of 3" wide painter's tape
hot glue gun, and glue
mat knife and box cutter
1 can spray paint primer (we used brown, but any color will do)
2 cans black (glossy) H2O Latex spray paint
3 dowl rods ( about 2 pencil width thick)
3 styrofoam rings (wreath size)
5 bags of 6 ea, 3" styrofoam balls cut in half.
1 plastic watermelon bowl (the cheap disposable kind)

Here is the bowl. We sanded it down, and then cleaned it with Windex multisurface cleaner to get all the "sand" out. Since the surface was shiney, we had to do this to make the paint and primer stick.

Next I had my loving and patient husband *bats eyelashes* cut the foam board. We agreed that the Dalek skirt should be 20" long. After examining the toy Dalek that Santa brought, we decided that the bottom of the pannels should be 12" wide and the top should be 9 " wide. This creates the angle needed to taper the shape of the Dalek properly. We cut 10 pces 20" long, 12" at bottom and 9" at top (angled down). The center panel on the side and back are cut at 29" at the bottom and angled up to the top so that the top is 3" smaller.

This is prototype #2....still not satisfied with this one, so we began to modify. Please note that the dome and rings are just set on the top. They will be the last pieces to make and will look more like the actual Dalek head piece. But those pictures will follow in a later post.

So, I began to modify the "body" part. Here's what I came up with so far. Also note, that this is as far as we have gotten. You are now caught up to our actual progress. Suggestions are welcome, and we have our plunger and ray gun. Still pondering how to fasten the eyestalk...some ideas already, but if you come up with something, let me know!

The front of the body is cut to reveal the "mutant" inside (that would be my son.) I attached some black window screening to the inside so you really can't see him very well, but he can see out. I also cut holes for the plunger and ray gun, however you cannot see them in these pictures.

We still have some modifications to go, to get more Dalek skirt and body shape, but it is coming along nicely!

Scarf question

Hello all!

I'm new here, been lurking for a little while...I was SO pleased to find places that combine Doctor Who and crafty-goodness.

Anyway, I have a question for you all: How long is a Doctor Who scarf supposed to be?? It doesn't really matter about scarves from different seasons, I'm just curious as to how long in general they are.

Reason being, I knitted one up using a loom (regular knitting drives me bonkers) and it came out to a bit over 20 feet! I'd like to know if I screwed something up somewhere along the way, or if I'm pretty accurate. Either way I'll most likely keep it.

Thanks! :)

(x-posted to who_knits and crafty_tardis)

Ok, so the first attempt didn't go well. It was definitely a learning experience, and spawned creative juices for improvements. I wonder if this is how Davros felt!?!?

Too big to work for a 7 yr old. Prototype 1 - FAIL!

He's upset because we were laughing at him trying to walk, ... although his movements were very close to a real Dalek. Unfortunately our first attmept, (and I knew it would be so) was a failure. Too large for him to manuver stairs.....(elevate?) and no where for him to hold his bag of loot. So it is back to the drawing board....

A valuable learning experience for all of us. I have more ideas, and the next one will be better....maybe even brilliant!

Hello all! I just recently joined this community.

Next month I'm taking a four day train trip across the country, and figured this would be a great time to start working on a scarf of my own. I'm planning on following the season 12 pattern.

For those of you who have made this one, do you know how many skeins of yarn for each color I'd need? (I'm using the Brown Sheep yarn) I don't want to be stranded in the midwest and suddenly run out of brown.

Thanks!

The Dalek Grater

Yesterday my esteemed colleague and I were in a Bed Bath & Beyond, trapped during a torrential downpour for a good twenty minutes. When this happens, we all know that the thing to do is to bunker down in the kitchen gadgets section and wrack your brains for things you never remember to buy until you have a recipe half done and realize that you don't have any measuring spoons, for instance. Well one of the many doodads I came out of the store with yesterday was a grater, which amazingly I've managed to live without for years. The grater we bought was chosen on the basis of it looking very reminiscent of a Dalek. Here is the link: http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?order_num=-1&SKU=11899277&RN=211&KSKU=104717

Obviously, it hasn't got a head, or appendages. I would be quite content to have it living in my cupboards, quietly plotting to exterminate a variety of cheeses for me, but the bug has bitten and I want to figure out how best to go about making a clever, removable, preferably *also* still useful in its own way, helmet for the guy so I can display it in the corner of my countertop as a secret nerdy reference in my otherwise innocuous kitchen. I'm thinking some sort of small strainer or bowl? Sewing a Dalek styled grater cozy is not what I'm asking for. I'm asking for ideas for other kitchen gadgets or useful items that can be used as a hat for this guy. Does anyone have any ideas?

The search for a blue, rectangular flour container continues, alas.

A little bit back I posted in someone's comments that I had been considering turning the TARDIS and Dalek cell phone charms into a couple sets of earrings. I had bought 2 of each with this intent. They didn't seem too heavy or big when I held them.
I finally got around to taking the time to put the french hook on one of them. I took off the string and first jump ring and hooked the french hook to the second jump ring. Then I put it in my ear.
Whoo Boy! I thought my ear was going to be pulled off and tear the hole straight through.
While I thought they didn't feel heavier than some of my other larger earrings I guess I was totally wrong.
This isn't a successful craft unfortunately but I wanted to post in case someone else thought of doing it to save their poor ears from the pain.
I've now got a TARDIS and Dalek on my phone instead and my husband might put the other set on his phone, he's not decided yet ;)

*i don't know if this is allowed but if it isn't, please let me know and i will remove this entry.*

hi everyone!
for those who are familiar with Swapbot, i've created a swap on swapbot for a Doctor Who related lucky parcel swap.

but for those who are unfimiliar, swapbot.com is a website where people from all around the world come to join in on different types of swaps. there are swaps ranging from ATCs to Knits to mixed CDs.

a lucky parcel is a package that is a small/medium sized box/bag/envelope containing items related to a theme. the items can be anything ranging from ATCs to Dotees to keychains and sweets. basically, anything you can think of!

so please feel free to join! i hope this swap will be an enjoyable one!
the last day for signing up is on the 10th of August. :D

*edit* for those who are wondering what an ATC is.

An ATC is an Artist Trading Card. it's a 2.5" x 3.5" handmade card with a theme made by artists to showcase their art style. it's a really interesting way to represent yourself as an artist.

here is a link so you can find out more.

Well it appears the party has gone well. Those boys who didn't know the Doctor, watched enthusiastically the selected episodes my son chose. Those who knew about the Doctor, enjoyed watching the episodes as well. Also, my attempt at a Dalek cake turned out better than I expected! Here are some pictures of my chocolately good creation!

Materials used:

2 Duncan Hines Red Velvet cake mix
1 dome pan (used to create the skirt on the "princess" cake for my daughter's 6th birthday party)
Chocolate frosting
2Priouline cookie
1 Twizler red licorice
1 3 Muskateers mini candy bar
White frosting
Malted Milk balls
Blue Icing Gel

I chose the Red Velvet cake because of the Dalek's thirst for blood, plus it makes a richer more sturdy cake/
One Pirouline was cut to make the eye stalk and the lights/ears on top. The ears were covered with white frosting. The Plunger was made from the other Prouline cookie, and we took the 3 Muskateers bar, broke off a piece (ate the leftovers) and molded it for the suction cup. The laser gun was made out of the Twizler cut to size.

I made the cake in the dome pan, plus a batch of cupcakes out of the same batter. I filled the cupcake papers up full so that they would puff up over the sides. Once cooled, I cut the dome off of 3 cupcakes and frosted them to the top of the cake. Then I added a full cupcake to the top. I then frosted the rest of the cake. I added the Malted Milk Balls to the sides, added the suction cup, laser gun, eye stalk and light ears.

I put a dab of white frosting on the end of the eye stalk and put a dollop of blue icing gel on the end to make the eye. I then used the blue gel to add the lines that join the head and body.

It was a lot easier than I thought it would be to make this!

The Dr Who masks that I made were also a big hit! Here is the entire "cast" of the Dr Who Party!

My 7 year old son is a big fan of Dr. Who. This is tough being that we live here in the US and there isn't much DR WHO stuff to be found....Oh sure there are the overpriced toys, (a special thanks to Santa for bringing them!) but try to have a Dr Who themed party, and search for party supplies, well now that is where the fun begins.

So after realizing that to order them from the UK it would cost around $60USD for the shipping and $50USD for the desired items, I figured I would try to be clever and MAKE them! Here is what I came up with:

a TARDIS made from an old water heater box I got from a plumbing company
Dalek (Bingo) game
Dr Who character masks
Dr Who Party Garland

I will let you all know how the party goes tomorrow, considering only 2 of the invited guests actually know anything about Dr Who, and what they know, my son has taught them!

The masks were just images I got off the website, printed and cut out the eyes of. The same with the garland, only I cut them smaller and strung them together with TARDIS blue ribbon. The Dalek game was just the same type of game as bingo using more images from the website.

Our next project will be a Dalek costume for Halloween....MORE FUN!

beaded dalek, and more tie dye

My sister is crocheting a dalek for me (I'll post pictures when it's done) so in exchange I made this beaded dalek for her. It's made of size 11 seed beads and is about 1.75 inches tall. If I get a chance I'm going to rework the design for the skirt (because it's too cylindrical right now) and possibly the top (which just looks a bit messy) but I'm pretty happy with how it came out.

Also, we had a tie-dye party so I made a better version of the time vortex tie dye shirt. This time, instead of stenciling the Tardis on, I used opaque heat-transfer paper which turned out very well, and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to put something on a tshirt.

I made a second shirt which was supposed to look like the 4th doctor opening, but the colors didn't come out quite right. I still like it though.

Front:

Back:

Shirt 2

To learn the purl stitch I decided in my madness to create a hat and scarf ensemble dedicated to the 5th doctor. (I'm going to call it, "Vision In Beige".) I was inspired in part by rhyski's celery pattern. So rather then starting with the scarf, I actually learned and practiced the purl stitch on Megzie's celery instructions.

I just finished my first stalk and I'm rather proud.

I was thinking I might try felting it... <strike>But I'm not sure if you can felt with 100% acrylic yarn.

Anybody got an opinion on that?</strike>

EDIT: Hugeness of the picture behind the cut fixed... I hope.
EDIT 2: This time for sure.
EDIT 3: Right, acrylic doesn't felt. Figured as much.
I discovered this community a couple weeks ago and immediately proceeded to read through the entire archive. Among other things, I've been inspired to get back to my Scarf, so thanks for that. (I am horrid at finishing knitting projects; I also have a dalek-in-progress somewhere, patterned and started long before I realized there were actually other people crazy enough to think knitting a dalek was a brilliant idea.)

I've also been trying out the stenciling thing like mad and I'll have pictures of all that eventually. But for starters I thought I'd share the Tardis cake I made a while ago (also long before I realized so many other people did such things), and some more recent cupcakes...

Last fall my friend Mary asked me to make a tardis cake for her boyfriend's surprise birthday party since he is a big Doctor Who fan. As I am also a big fan and a professional cake decorator as well, naturally I agreed. Here it is!

:D For scale and accuracy:

I will admit that I was too lazy to take the cake into work to airbrush it, so the icing turned everyone's mouth blue. And while it wasn't exactly bigger on the inside, it was a very tasty rum cake that disappeared almost as quickly as the tardis dematerializing.

-*-*-

So now the other week, as I was reading through this comm and everything, I really wanted to make a dalek cake for my friend Abby's birthday (she is also the one who got me into Doctor Who) but alas, it turned out that not only wasn't she having a party but she was leaving town on her birthday! So I just scribbled on some cupcakes I had made to try out a chocolate-ginger cake recipe:

I think I should have done two daleks, because the tardis came out kinda funky, but c'est la vie. (And they are not iced because she doesn't actually like icing.) Now I will just have to come up with another excuse to make the dalek cake.

-*-*-

Here is one last picture that sorta kinda maybe fits here, since it is technically knitting+cupcakes+Dr.Who:

And thus I say hello to all of you like-minded Doctor Who-loving crafty peoples--I'm thrilled to have found you!

(and feel free to check out the rest of my non-dr.who cake pictures and knitted cupcake adventures over on flickr)
TARDIS quilt- suggestions needed

I dug out my Electric Quilt program today and messed around with it and came up with a pattern for a TARDIS quilt. There's a sketch under the cut, along with some things I'm wibbling over before I start cutting up fabric.

- the 'fabrics' are not exactly the fabrics I would use; they were as close to the color I wanted that was in the program (too lazy to scan and import my own fabric)
- the strips (sashing, which is strips between quilt blocks) around the little door panels will not have the small corner squares, it will be long unbroken strips to look more like the real doors, you just can't do that in EQ
- it's all pieced except for the 'police box' sign and the light on the top, which will be appliqued
- it's almost all squares and strips except for the mitered edges of the door panels and the weird inset shapes near the top
- there's no text on the sketch, because it's too aggravating to do in EQ. The white sign on the left door will be done with a piece of special fabric that you can print on, and the 'police box' sign will have white letters appliqued on the sign.

That said, I need some feedback before I start chopping up fabric.

- I feel like the proportions are a little off--like it's too tall and skinny, it should be a little shorter and wider, but I'm not sure.
- I can't decide what size to make it. I thought about making a miniature for a wallhanging, with a length of no more than 30", but that would make the miters on the panels so narrow they might not sew correctly. (I could just cut them wider, sew, and then trim down.) It also makes the letters for the black 'police box' sign very, very tiny. The pattern as it is is 19.75" x 40.00", which is a little too big vertically for a wallhanging but not big enough to use as a throw. I don't really want to make a throw size, though, because while it would be easier to piece it would take longer to quilt and that is where I always run out of steam, plus it would not be seen most of the year as it would be too hot to use it (I live in the southern US).
- The center strip down the middle, between the doors, should be wider, but EQ wouldn't let me do that. It would be easy for me to cut that an inch or so wider, and make all the top pieces an inch wider as well. Would it look better proportioned that way?

Anyway, if you are so inclined, please take a peek at the sketch and give me some feedback on how to make this look better. :)

(crossposted to my lj)
