The infamous Dalek hat
This very strange idea took hold of me and wouldn't let go until I made it for the
who_knitsgood vs evil knitalong. Thought I'd share it with you lovely people, since you might appreciate it a wee bit more than my family does. Because you might think I wouldn't wear this in public. But you would be so, so wrong.
Pictures and directions below the cut for the infamous Dalek hat.
It's a very poor quality camera phone pic, but you get the idea. As you can tell, I'm a new and not terribly accomplished knitter.

In case anyone else is odd enough to want to join me in my insanity - directions. Sort of.
Because I want to make directions relevant to different materials and methods, and totally not because I fail at keeping track of anything and just figured it out as I went along, my instructions are generic. This should work for knit or crochet, any yarn and needle size, or fleece. Or whatever materials your heart desires. Before you start, knit or crochet a swatch to get a feel for how many stitches equal an inch. Remember that it won’t keep exactly the shape it begins with, let it sit a day or two after finished to get an accurate count of stitches per inch.
Base hat-
Mine is grey with black. Any basic ski cap pattern should work. Here are a couple-

The eye and ear-light thingummys are cylinders. If you can knit or crochet a cylinder, awesome. I made a flat panel with a flap at one end, sewed up the panel, then fitted the flap down for the top. Yes, with soft materials a square end cap will still make a round cylinder.
All measurements are approximately those of my finished product - but don't stress about making it exact. This is not meant to be a serious project.
Make two ear-lights in white- 3 inches tall by 5 inches circumference (7.6 x 12.7 cm) - flap is 1 ½ inches square (3.8 cm)
Make one eye - black sides, white or blue flap. 3 in tall by 5 ½ around(7.6 x 14 cm) , flap is 2 x 1 1/2 inches (5 x 3.8 cm)
Eye stalk- 6 by 1 ¾ inches (15.2 x 4.4cm)
Wrap around a wooden skewer. I used 4 pipe cleaners twisted together, but it droops rather more than I’d like. Looks very depressed.
For the ridges on the eye stalk, I made I-cord, 2 inches long(5 cm) wrapped once around for the small ridges and 8 inches long (20 cm) twice around for the center one.
Maybe a diagram will help?
I also bought some tiny flashlights, put them in the ears with the on button at the bottom- but it has to be pretty dark to see the light through the knitting.
If any of this is terribly unclear, let me know. And if it’s actually helpful, I’d really love to know that too.
