I've been obsessing on amigurumi lately...
Now that I live in a place that actually has farmers' markets and yarn shops (inspiriation + materials), bushels of amigurumi veggies are practically growing out of my little hooks! I freehand them - no patterns or instructions - and I encourage you to do the same if you've never done amigurumi but want to start. (All you need to know is single crochet, how to increase and decrease, and how to crochet in the round. Then you just sit down and do it.) I also switched over to 100% cotton yarn, which I think yields much better (sturdier, smoother) results and is easier to work in tiny tiny stitches than acrylic. Anyways, here's a basket of 'em:

(tomato in front; in back, from left to right: carrot, broccoli, cucumber, carrot, eggplant)

You can ask me about it on my personal journal - selling/advertising/talking about it on craftgrrl is against craftgrrl rules and whatnot...

Awesome! Even more awesome because I have spent half the day making vegetables too! (Sewn, though, not crocheted.) I think I'll have to post pictures when I'm done (hopefully tomorrow) and we can have a veggie fight ;)

No, it's the easiest thing in the world. All you do is crochet in the round using single crochet, and increase or decrease when you want to change the shape. For example, the carrot starts with a teeny circle, and then I increase it a little, do a few rows, increase some more, etc, to form a cone, and then I decrease a whole lot at once to make the top. When I was first learning, there were no free patterns or instructions online... finally I found one cruddy pattern, read what it involved, and went, "Oh! I don't need a pattern for this!" The next day, I crocheted a cute little pig with big ears and a curly tail, all from my imagination. Nothing to it.

Those are adorable. I never used to like the look of crocheted items but lately I keep seeing the cutest things . . . I think I'm going to have to learn to crochet at last!

I just ordered up some hooks and yarn to try this out. I've never crocheted before, and I'm trying to teach myself from online tutorials. I have however been knitting for the last 15 years or so, so I'm hoping that some of the general 'string and sticks' mojo will leak over...

These are just adorable! I want to try out my own!

Could you tell us how you did the curlies on the top of the carrots/broccoli?

Could you please explain how you did the brocoli. How you started with a trunk then managed to spilt the trunk in two? I won't be crocheting a brocoli, but my mind is really curious as to how it was done. Did you do the two ends separate then attached it to the big end? did you do it all at once? ARGH, it is really bothering me.

I love your work

It's a secret!!

No... just kidding. Just like with everything else I do, I had no idea what I was doing, so I just winged it. The basic method I came up with is:

1. Make the trunk.
2. Make a chain that is roughly the diameter of the trunk, or a little less, if you want it to become more oval than round.
3. Attach the chain to the other side of the trunk.
4. Start crocheting in the round, but using the chain you just made as half of the circle.
5. When it's long enough, decrease to close.
6. Stuff everything you've done so far & add safety eyes if you're so inclined.
7. Draw a loop through part of the diameter chain and tie the loose end to keep it secure.
8. Crochet in the round to make the other branch, stuffing it as you go along.
9. Decrease and tie off.
10. For a floret, draw a loop through some part of a stitch on the end of one branch. Make a chain, crochet back along the chain, fasten the last stitch onto the branch again, then stitch through the loose end of the chain, forming a loop of single crochet affixed onto the branch. Do that a whole bunch of times until it looks right. A similar method works for the greens on any veggie - carrots, tomatoes, etc.

Does that make sense? I'm really sleepy.

Im not the OP for this information but I was curious as well.. The whole separating the broccoli in two made sense, but could you try and re-explain number 10? Making the little twisty florets?

Your stuff is so cute- It makes me want to make some! But I don't know what I'd do with them.
