please do not comment making me feel bad.
::edit:: I am referring to this thread; wherin mean comments led to some really uncalled for insults.

http://community.livejournal.com/craftgrrl/9174096.html

Crafting isnt about what other people like, its about creating something that YOU like.

There are several things on this community that I havent really been turned on to.  I keep it to myself.  There may be things I am delighted to have made that others might find disgusting.    My mom always told me if you have nothing nice to say, dont say anything at all.

Lets be nice to each other and respect our differences.  Not to sound like an elementary school teacher (which, in fact, I am)but insults will do none of us any good.

We are all here to look at new and different things people make.  Remember, if its not your style, you don't have to leave a comment stating so.  To each their own.  The artist has every right to be happy with something they've created.

I've become a little hesitant to post things that I've made because I'm afraid to get comments about how hideous they are.

I'd like to feel welcomed and appreciated, no matter what I post.

Just my two cents, and to make this on topic:  Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting  my room.  I made the curtains out of a shower curtain, the mirror with covered cardboard (and the lamp matches,)  the white magnetic board, and the garbage can has colored velcro on it.

ok thanks everyone.

Green and pink was a colour way I hadn't considered before. thanks for expanding my colour horizons!

thank you.

the mirror has pink beads on the bottom.

this was actually taken a little after my birthday, which is why there are sunflowers on the lamp. (I LOVE SUNFLOWERS!) and my best friend gave me a ton and put them around my room--they arent there anymore.

I love the lie green and pink combo, and I've gotten a lot of compliments on my room (when its clean!!) saying it looks like something out of Pottery Barn Teen.

so, thanks again! :-D

I bought them on clearance at Marshalls (a discount dept. store) maybe a year ago? I was looking for a normal shower curtain, and found this, which my mom and I decided needed to be in my room. Sometimes shower curtains are cheaper, prettier, and longer than normal curtains. Since my apartment has awkward dimensions, this worked perfectly.

I checked for tags, but no luck.

I'm just impressed you chose and got a color sheme to run together. I end up with "families" of tones. Everything is sort of "fall-ish" colors or tones. Or everything is vaguely in the same tone family. Pulling together a hot pink/pale green combo and making it work is daunting for me, but it looks great.

And I have to agree, the mirror looks like something I'd see at a store and the curtains are a *great* find. awesome.

And that drama-rama in that other thread is the kind of judgemental nasty comment that typically doesn't happen here. I've been reading (not posting. My craftiness goes undocumented. heh) for uh.. 2 years or so. That kind of thing just doesn't happen here.

The mean comments came from people with a low intelligence level who think it's 'fun' to join communities like http://craftgrrl_snark.livejournal.com/. Our mods need to take some action in my opinion.

As for the room, I like how it turned out. I don't know that I would have thought to use shower curtains as a curtain by my bed.

its fabric!!! not a shower liner.

so you really cant tell its a shower curtain;
except that it has holes sewn into the top in order to hang it.

but i wove the curtain rod through them, it works perfectly!
its a bit heavier than a normal curtain, but i love it!!

I disagree, the first comment in the other post was obliviously harsh, but later on they were some really well-written constructive criticism, which I enjoy more than 12 comments of "OMG that's awesome" even when all twelve are well-deserved.

I don't personnaly see this community as bitchy, one poster here even said "you guys are like the best confidence booster. ^_^

And I like your colour coordination. It's very daring and I wouldn't have had the guts to try it. :D

Yeah, the first comment was totally mean-spirited and unhelpful. After that one, there were some helpful constructive criticisms.

I tend to interpret Thumper's line there as referring to comments like the first one to that post. But constructive criticism falls under nice things to say, if they're worded respectfully and...well, nicely. :3

can't stand the feedback, stay out of the comm. Whether the comments were harsh or not, the post in question requested feedback. You're getting persnickity over one comment, and trying to use it to say that the snarkers are mean, evil people who should be banned. So somebody got into somebody's face, and yet it's you, not the original poster of the lamp, who is getting her shorts in a knot. As the OP of the lamp post doesn't feel the need to whine, perhaps you shouldn't stand up and do it for her.

That being said, I do like your curtain fabric. I've always been fond of that particular, eye-searing color combination.

I dunno, I'm thinking that while critical comments are certainly the norm, it's not like tact should be tossed out the window.

Personally, I didn't much like the lamp. However, if I'd wanted to comment on it, I would have offered something more than "that's the tackiest thing I've ever seen!"

What got me was the first comment on that post was "That has to be the [sic] nost tackiest/scene lamp I've ever seen."

Seriously, what's the rationale for saying something like that? I agree that constructive criticism is important when it comes to being able to grow, craft-wise, but there's a distinct difference between saying "it's interesting, although next time why not try...." and "ugh, I've never seen anything so hideous in my entire adult life."

I agree that if you can't take criticism, get out of the comm. Obviously, not everything everyone makes is everyone elses cup of tea. But the point of a lot of communities is to get feedback on what you've made. And if it happens to need some work, then people should be able to tell you that.

Of course, there's no need to be really mean about it, but if it's not that nice looking, I sure as hell ain't gonna lie and say it is. However, I will try and mention ways to make it better. If you post crafts and just expect people to gush over it, sooner or later, you will be sorely dissapointed. This is not your mother's refridgerator :P

one comment about the mean comment thing though, on the internet, there are always people who decide to be randomly mean and bashing to strangers.

I really like what you've done with the room. My room's theme is mainly green but.. not half as creative as that ;p.

Anyway, refering to the past thread.. of course it's about creating what we personally like. But putting it into a community, you are going to draw some unwelcome comments that you just have to learn to deal with. You're leaving it open to anyone to say anything about it. If all that matters is that you like it then the rest of the comments shouldn't matter, right? Then I don't see the problem.

Are we suddenly against constructive criticism? Or are we going to look at every piece and say, "My god! That's fabulous!"? No one will grow in their crafting and design abilities if they're coddled all the time.

If something I do looks in any way sloppy or unfinished or just plain bad, I'd like to know so I can improve.

If we wanted unconditional support and admiration, well, that's what web bots and pets are for. In that case, why have communities? Just so people will compliment us and pat our little heads?

time for my two cents
[info]sheis_slaughter
2006-09-12 05:25 am UTC (link)
Okie dokie so here are my thoughts on this whole issue:
Personally I think this community is a great starting point because you can get criticism but in a positive way. I have been doing some crafts for a long time and am much better at them then others. However seeing things on this community that are seemingly simple helps encourage people who have never attempted that particular craft especially after seeing positive responses. I know that's why I bought some polymer clay, because this community made it look fun and people were nice and provided good advice!

Plus this community is not the end all to internet craftyness it's just one resource, if you would prefer a community with only advanced members and detailed critiques rather than a comment like "that's cute!" then by all means start one, join others. This is just one option out there and it works for a lot of people who aren't bothered by being courteous to one another even if it is just the internet.

now to the OP: I like the mirror! Is it really just cardboard and mirror? Is that sturdy enough?

the mirror is a circle i found at home depot. its glued on to thick cardbard, and then i covered the cardboard with fabric, and stuffed it with a filling around where the mirror is. it has a sewn on ribbon in order for it to hang. the mirror itself really isnt that heavy, it just looks it.

i appreciate your actual comment!

i never expected my inbox to be flooded with 80 or so comments arguing!

i just wanted everyone to be nicer.
guess i did more harm than good, though...
