Current mood: drilling a screw into my head
Current music:Mint Royale: Show Me

i freaked out on a boring white lamp!
hey guys! i just wanted to show you what i did to a boring white lamp my mom found at goodwill for 3 dollars.
at first i really wanted to paint it, and was waiting for the perfect inspiration of what to paint on it. but then i was holding up one of my collages and freaked out when i saw how much prittier it was when light was shining through it. SOOOOOOO i decided to collage it :D

what it says: "lets pretend we own the world today" if anyone knew that was from a bikini kill song, you should pat yourself on the back, because you are officially cool.

this is the base. i wanted to keep it simple on account of the crazy-busy look of the shade but i made sure i put some dinosaur ribbon on there. the dots are dotted tissue paper that i put on with a mixture of glue, water, and some leftover paint from putting letters on the shade, which is why the veins of the paper looks really awesome.

detail of a patch my good friend made me of some crazy robots, with strawberry fabric under it, which shines though, and you can see crazy robots AND strawberries...at the same time...my life is complete.

a different angle, i thought this pictue is important to show exactly how awesome it is.

detail of a stegosaurus that i drew on some paper and put on there. they are unquestionably my favorite dinosaur, and its fun to see my buddy hanging out with starlight shining though him!(sorry for blurr D: )

detail of a picture of an old poster of a girl on a bike and the remainder of some coffee themed tissue paper, which i used to have a lot of, but used it all because its amazingly cool.

i really want this to not be a fire hazard, if it is, you guys should tell me, and tell me how to fix it, please :)

Well, "freaked out" is certainly the right adjective. That being said, to make it less of a fire hazard, you'll want to remove the bow.

I'm going to second removing the bow. It doesn't seem to really have any relation to what is going on above or below it, but that's not about fire prevention.

I personally think you've got too much going on, as if you didn't know when to stop, each part of the lamp seems to cancel out another party. I think the shade would look ten times more powerful if the lamp were a darker more subdued tone (like a deep burgundy or brown or crimson, pick one of the colors of the shade. It would complement what you've done and give you a focal point). You don't have to do it, but I'd give it thought.

Or you can dig around my site and find something lame to insult me about.

If you're painting the base and can't afford gesso, buff it up or sand it to remove the glaze and create a tooth and then acrylic over that. Honestly, I think you'll find that acrylic will stick better and be a lot less of a pain.

Also, acrylic paint is dirt cheap whereas oil costs more. You can always glaze over the acrylic to get a richer hue anyway.

That being said, I personally think the base and bow are garish, but that's just me and my personal style.

I really do like the shade. The collaging with patterns idea is pretty cool. I think the technique you used for the base is neat, but it looks a bit unfinished as is (like near the top and bottom).

And, on a closing note, Death Cab hasn't been scene for ages. But dinosaurs and polka dots have been...

i thought the word scene had to do with music, not extinct animals or common patterns, but i suppose i can be wrong.

thanks, almost all off my collages have sewing patterns in them, it just adds a nice geomerty too it, and makes things look a little more intricate, in my oppinion.

like i said, i have alot of oil paint, and not so much acrylic (i have black and a sea foam green color, and thats it), and right now i cant afford to buy anything extra, so i'll make due.

i did this relpy backwards.

I like the base, the ribbon and the shade. Just not all together. LOL But hey, art is subjective. If you love it, keep it and enjoy it.

That said, I think the base would love aweseome with a black shade and pink trim.

I also think the top would look pretty damn nice with a dark colored plain base. It's a lot easier to admire the collage effect without the distraction from the base.

I love the shade!

I'll admit that I am not a fan of the vase - simply because of what a few people above me have said - it would look nicer with a darker colored base, reddish maybe and that way - the collage is the focal point and it should be! It's awesome!

I want to do this, maybe I'll get an elephant, sewing pattern, coca cola theme going! :-) :-)

I had no idea dinosaurs = "scene". Apparently I've been "scene" since sometime in the early 80's and I had no idea.

I have to agree with others, that shade is *great*. And I did something similar to a lamp base at some point in time, but I would make this shade and the lamp two different lamps. They need to shine on their own. That base could rock with a pink or black shade.

That shade I would definitely put on a base all on its own, some plain in color that compliments the parchment color. And there are lots of "flame resistant" stuff at your average craft stores to make paper fire resistant.

I would have something like that in my room.
It is something...you like...something you created. Whether other people like it or not is their business. We certainly do not like everything they make.
What we craft shouldn't have to fit into a certain mold. we are all different and should be allowed to express it. If they can't handle it, perhaps a crafting community on LJ is too intense for them.
I love the dinosaur ribbon.
I say...rock on...keep on creating and fuck the haters. Nothing that is normal and fits the mold ever gets recognized!!!
Well it does, but you know what I mean.
People always want to hate on what is different.

couple things:

first off:
mandapop-- i love your icon, it is so adorable.

second off:
woah_the_kettle-- you made something you like, it doesn't matter what they think. i know, getting redundant by now, but seriously, everyone has such different tastes. if you're in school, look around you--there's so much diversity around you, and you may not like some things they like, not everyone's gonna like what you like.. of course, i thought it was outright rude to just sit there and attack you like that. some people have no sense of courtesy. If they don't like it, leave it alone, they don't have to comment on everything that's posted.. If she felt the need to comment, she could have also added something she may have liked about it, instead of the entirely negative tone she put out. unfortunately, some people can dish out better than they can take. who knows, her stuff could just hit a nerve in you as apparently your stuff did to her. who knows! all i know from reading this is that some people need to learn a little bit about courtesy. now, i do find your lamp rather busy, but what we make reflects ourselves, whether we think it does or not if we really look into it, we all put our hearts into what we make, and to be flat out just dropped like that, it really is heartbreaking. i just wish other people could see how they affect others.

and, quoting from mandapop: i'm sorry people are mean.

I really like the shade but the base dosen't seem to fit. I think the ribbon needs to go and that the base needs to be a solid color, maybe a reddish brown or reddish gold.

Also, if there are a few places on the shade that white(the shade itself) still show maybe think of adding a few splashed of slight brighter shades of the colors already used in the different peices. It might give it a little...ummpft? Just thinking outloud there.

I know this sort of defeats the purpose, but do you have a picture of it with the light off? I can't quite make out the stegosaurus etc., and I want to!!

The ribbon reminds me of my childhood dinosaur days. Though I do agree with many PPs, it's a bit of a fire hazard. I also agree with many that a darker, solid-colored base would look best.
