Skirts from Pants ~ two styles
Here are two skirts that I made from pants ~ one is the normal pants-alteration style with some embroidery, the other is a style I haven't seen before.

This skirt was made from a pair of cords that I always felt a little dumpy in. When they got a rip on the butt I had the perfect excuse to cut them up. ;) I actually made this a few months ago, but it got cold right afterwards so I never got a picture in them until now.

This was my first altered skirt & my first hand embroidery project!
Embroidered in black & two shades of brown ~

I made this skirt this weekend. This was my favorite pair of cords but I wore them too much & they got worn in the crotch. I wanted to do a different style, and was thinking of two tiered ruffles, but that was too similar to a skirt I made from corduroy fabric a while back (http://pmthreads.livejournal.com/5465.html). So I came up with this~

I love how it turned out! It looks even better in person.

I chopped the pants off right under the back pockets & before the crotch started to curve in the front. Then I cut 16 pieces out from the legs using a template similar to a rectangle that flares out an inch at the bottom. The size of your template is really going to depend on the size of your pants ~ see the comments for a picture & more description on how to get your template measurements.

I turned the template in every direction possible to have the corduroy facing many directions. The light hits each panel a little differently because of the slants of the wale. It looks great with corduroy, & I think it would work well with the pattern on denim too. ;)

I will tell you though, stretch corduroy is a pain to work with! (I'm used to fabrics with no stretch) My serger has differential feed dogs, which keep the fabric from stretching or bunching, but I had troubles getting the fabric not to bunch when I topstitched the pieces on my regular machine & had to come up with some creative solutions for that.

Very nice, I used to try to do this all the time and failed miserably. I think because I made them too straight or something.

Like for the first style? I laid out the chopped up pants & spread out the legs until it all laid pretty flat, then pinned the panels in place underneath the legs.. I sewed them in (topstitching from the front), then trimmed down the back of the panel closer to the seams. (Oh, and I seam-ripped all the way up the zipper & tucked in the fabric to be straight becuase I'm not a fan of the crossed-over crotch area look.)

My husband had never seen a skirt like that before (at least never noticed one, I'm sure he's seen them)... he was very confused & worried & kept saying "isn't it going to look like pants?" ;)

Gorgeous!!!

Could you possibly post a pic or dimensions for the template you used for the second skirt? :)

Here is what it basically looked like ~

For the dimensions, cut up the pants first, then measure how large the bottom opening is. Divide that by 16, then add in your seam allowand & that will the the measurement of the top. Add an inch for the bottom measurement. Try on the cut off skirt & measure how long you would like it to be for the height of the template... I believe mine was about 10 inches tall.

You may need to use a different number of pieces (16) for the bottom, but I picked it based on the pants I was using. I laid out the pants & followed the slant of the waist to see how large the bottom would naturally be. I wanted my pieces to be at least an inch larger at the bottom so the tapering was noticable. (If you have too many pieces, they will not be able to taper much & still reach the measurement you want around the bottom. If you add an inch to them anyways, it will be too full at the bottom & will create fold that will hide the design.) So, 16 pieces will probably be fine, but you might want to crunch the numbers first if you wear a small size.

Oh, mind if I ask you a stupid sewing question? I'm a newbie when it comes to sewing, but I do have access to a sewing machine ...

How did you sew the panels together?

No problem! Put the front sides of the fabric together, sew along the edge, then open the pieces. The seam will be on the backside of the fabric. You will do this most of the times you are sewing anything (unless you are lining something).

I also pressed the seams to one side, and then stitched right beside the seam on the front side of the fabric to keep the seam nice & flat. That is called topstitching.

Excllent job on the embroidery! I really like the second skirt! Very cool! I love how it looks like two different types of material on the bottom (even though it is not).

Thanks! I love the way the light changes the look of the fabric ;) Sometimes it's subtle, sometimes more dramatic.

awesome job :) i love when my first attempts at any new craft turn out really well. not so many people are lucky, but you are!

Thanks for the compliment on the old skirt ~ I hardly ever made clothing for myself but I really love all three of these skirts!

I really love trying out new crafts/projects, and they do usually turn out well the first time. I think it is just because I have crafted through most of my life, it is easy to pick up new things. That is kind of bad for me though, because I will buy all of the supplies for a new craft, make a few items, then discover a new craft I just have to try out & loose interest. I would spend all of my money on supplies if it were up to me ;)

hahah me too. With a Christmas gift cerificate, I got a scrapbook. I purposely avoided the scrapbooking phenomenon because it can get addicting and expensive. But all crafting is pretty addicting!

I just love your skirts! I've always seen those skirts made from pants, but these two top them all!

Can't wait till the baby comes so I can wear fitted clothes again. I'll be making this skirt for sure!

Thanks, and Congratulations! What a big tummy ;) It looks like we got married about a month before you, and you're due right around the time of our anniversary (April 4th)

I love your bags! I've got some one my site, but I mostly use them as a place to put a really intricate applique, not really trying out different styles. And what pretty batiks!

I took much longer than I thought it would actually, I'm used to machine embroidery! I'm not sure how long though ~ I did the large flower one night at home (hour or two), then took it on a 2 hour car ride for the two flowers on the left & part of the bottom flower. At *least* five hours total, but it was also my first try and I was making up the design as I went.

It is really not bad if you work on it a little at a time while you are hanging out. I will probably grab my sewing machine next time though.

Wow, these are the first pant-to-skirt conversions I've seen that I would actually like to wear.. Usually I've seen that first style done with a contrasting fabric, which can look tacky sometimes. And the embroidery is really cool. I like your cord skirt mostly just because I love cord. Top notch. :-)
