ghettoknitting project
I've been knitting for a couple of months now, but I've been fortunate enough to have been given some very nice, high-end yarn. I've used a lot of it, however, and as a broke college student, it was time to whip out the Wal-Mart brand yarn and aluminum needles. I'm calling it the 'Skinny Skully Scarf,' and I'll post instructions, if there's any interest.

The scarf is actually longer than it seems to be in this picture: I was just trying to fit it all in the frame.

Here's a close-up of the intarsia skull and crossbones on the end.

Please forgive the crappy webcam shots! I'll try to get some better pictures, because these really don't do it justice.

SKINNY SKULLY SCARF INSTRUCTIONS

Materials
★ black worsted weight yarn
★ white worsted weight yarn
★ Size 8 needles
★ Crochet hook or darning needle

Instructions
★ Cast on 29 stitches in black.
★ Knit the whole scarf like this:
Row 1: knit 29
Row 2: knit 2, purl 25, knit 2
This will make the front of the scarf stockingette, with a nice, easy to sew ribby-looking edge.
★ Start working skull chart (below) from the bottom up (This involves intarsia knitting...I learned from Stitch 'n Bitch by Debbie Stoller!!). When finshed the chart, work another 6 rows in black.

★ Switch to white and work 6 rows.
★ Switch to black and work 6 rows.
★ Switch to white and work 6 rows.
★ Switch back to black and work until the scarf measures approx. 50 inches long.
★ Switch to white and work 6 rows.
★ Switch to black and knit 6 rows.
★ Switch to white and work 6 rows.
★ Switch to black and knit 6 rows. Then start the skull chart again, this time working from the top of the skull down.
★ Work another 6 rows in black and cast off.
★ Work in ends.
★ Using a crochet hook / darning needle, sew the long edges of the scarf together.
★ With 5 pieces of yarn per, use a lark's head knot to attach fringe. (I used 5 fringes on each end).

Besides the intarsia, this is a very simple project that knits up easily. Please leave comments!

I just found this from a link on another site, but the images are gone. Sigh. I have been playing around with illusion knitting and am doing a skull and crossbones pattern right now. I would love to see your scarf!

Well, she deleted her journal so she probably won't get your reply. :P
