THE PLARN FEVER
Hai!

I love to knit / crochet and have recently invested in my very own sewing machine. (and I suck at bobbins lemme tell you!)

After playing with the idea of plarn, i created a very ugly bag. Please view!

MY PLARN BAG IN ITS GLORY

Thats my teddy, Blender, modeling the plarn bag's ~amazing~ flexibility.

Plarn bags also make good cat ears. I found this out by putting it on my friends head and then taunting her for looking like a cat for like, 15 mins straight.

My mom hates the plarn bag, she thinks its super lame. Which hurts me.

Who else has used the magical plarn? I found it rather easy peasy and very relaxing. Any ideas for COLORING IT? I don't think its possible, but i'd love to hear what others have done!

<3!

I'm making plarn to make outdoor doormats to my backyard & garden - they stand up to weather, and I don't have to worry about ruining them! :-D

It appears to be plastic yarn--yarn made my cutting up plastic grocery bags!

it is "yarn" made from plastic grocery bags. I crocheted my plarn bag with a big hook (i'd say the size but I'm not positive). Its really easy!

I love making reusable grocery bags out of grocery bags! crafty and recycling, the wonders of plarn!

I've seen patterns for making scrubby dishcloths using plarn and door mats.

Don't think there is really any good way to color it, but i've done stripes and things with different colored plastic bags.

I'm in the middle of making a plarn wastebasket. I'm using an H hook, so it's a bit strenuous, but it's working up nice and stiff.

Tell your mom to back up off your crochet!

i found a tutorial in this very community a while back. its really easy! you just cut up the bags into strips and attack the strips with a knot. after a while, you get a nice pile of plarn. then you use said plarn just like you would use yarn.

i wish i knew where the tut when but im not sure exactly.

I occasionally see folks asking for specific colors of plastic bag on Freecycle--you could try that if you wanted to make stuff that wasn't that grotty Safeway tan. Maybe a nicer color would get your mom to use it? White seems like the next most common, so possibly white with red or blue trim and handles?
You've also got me thinking now. My workplace generates lots of spandex scrap--I wonder if I could make yarn (sparn?) out of it...

My nan used to ALWAYS make knitted coathanger covers out of that stuff... got to the point where there wasn't a coathanger in the house that wasn't either wire, covered with knitted bread bags or covered with pretty & lacy wool - made by my other grandma who preferred to make pretty things, lol)!

She never thought to make a bag out of the stuff... which is a MUCH more practical idea than coathanger covers! Go you!

I may make one of these someday...
