My crocheted wedding cake
(cross-posted to a few places)

Good day all! First I want to say that it's a pleasure looking at all your wonderful crafts. There are some very talented and creative people in this community, thank you for sharing it all!

And now on to the craftiness!

I recently became engaged, and immediately dove into the wedding plans. As I've always loved wedding stuff, and I'm fairly crafty, I decided to do as much of the wedding stuff as I can myself. This will include my invitations, favours, decorations and...my cake! I have a fair understanding of how expensive they can be, and the wedding is going to be expensive enough without having to shell out hundreds of dollars on a cake. SO! I took my crochet hook in-hand and got to work. This will be used for the official pictures, and it'll make a nice decoration at the reception. I'm planning on serving a just-as-tasty but less expensive slab cake to my guests.

For each "layer" I cut 2 discs out of 3" thick white styrofoam (it looked like it had snowed in my back porch when I was done) and then fit the crocheted pieces over top. I used pearl-headed pins to affix the "icing" to the foam so it would stay put. I used wooden skewers to hold the bottom and the middle layers together. The flowers are all silk, and the ribbon is grosgrain. I used pretty little liquer glasses I found at a local dollar store 2 for $1. All in all, instead of spending $250+ on an edible version, I get this one which will (obviously) look great in pictures and only ran me about $60 cdn. and a little bit of elbow grease. Pretty good deal.

So here ya go!

I am considering taking out the larger roses on the bottom tier, I think they are sticking out a little bit too far. Other than that, however, this puppy is DONE. I'm very happy with it, even with the sticky-out roses. What do you folks think?

Thanks for looking!

it looks good. that's an interesting alternative to a fancy cake XD after spending so much money on those decorated tiered cakes, it feels like a shame to eat it.

Very cool! You should post this in [info]weddingplans, I bet they'll enjoy it. People are always looking for inexpensive cake alternatives.

That is a fantastic idea! I've helped plan two weddings from the ground up, and am SO VERY OVER weddings, but this? This is adorable! Good luck, and congrats!

Thank you! I've got my work cut out for me for sure. Add to the fact that it's a theme wedding and it becomes even -more- of a challenge. We're doing a 1940's style gangster wedding, complete with zoot suits and fake tommy guns :D

I've done my fair share of event planning, so I knew well enough to give myself 15 months to plan. Little by little this sucker's gonna come together! :)

I did mine in a week, but I went barefoot in my mom's backyard and had less than 20 guests (<lj user="mara295" did a bang-up job on my jewelry too!) Not to one-up ya, I just amaze myself now and then at how little I care about 'fancy' stuff!

good lord!! i wouldn't have pulled it off without my mother..she is amazing..she did both my cakes, and sewed all four of my bridesmaid dresses, and had to hand sew the lining and the hem on them, and altered my dress....but ya...a week wow

but i did mine in another state so i think six weeks is pretty good

zomg! so freaking pretty! and such an awesome idea!

it looks a thousand times better than the cake i spent 150 bucks on.

my hubby and i are getting remarried for legal reasons, and if we were actually having a reception and stuff, i would totally try my hand at my own crocheted cake.
