    Sand Castle Cake

We are having the Closing Party for our VBS kids tomorrow.
Besides making about $45 on my G-Sale today I also managed to bake and decorate a cake today

Since the Theme of VBS this year was all about surfing and sand dollars one of the ladies from the Church is making Sand Dollar Cookies and I found this in a magazine a few months ago and decided to try it.  Learned alot from making this one - will do several things different next time.

We used crushed up Dumb-Dumb Pops for the Sea Glass - the recipe used those Chocolate Rocks....they are just a bit pricey so I improvised.

Close up - you can see the Tootsie Roll doors.  The sand is made from Vanilla Waffers that I ran through the food processor.

This is a better shot - Alex wants to put a moat in next time....hahaha

Houdini and the Sea Monster from Cape Cod
In 1911, Harry Houdini was manacled and slipped inside the carcass of a "sea monster" that had washed up on a beach on Cape Cod. The unidentified corpse was then sewn shut corset-style with metal eyelets that had been affixed, and chain was wrapped around it. Houdini escaped, although the fumes of the rotting beast mixed with arsenic (which was used to preserve it for the stunt) very nearly killed him. Fortunately, Houdini was able to stay conscious, and managed to escape from his organic prison.

From the book "The Secret Life of Houdini: The Making of America's First Superhero":

The procession started on the Long Wharf of Boston Harbor and continued through the winding streets to Keiths Theatre. Crowds of people followed the bizarre parade, others just stood on the sidewalk and watched in awe as Houdini's next great challenge was publicly displayed. "It" was a giant 1,600 pound sea monster that had been fished out of the ocean, a "what is it" that locals had identified as a cross between a whale and an octopus. Ten prominent Boston businessmen had challenged Houdini to be fettered with handcuffs and leg irons and escape from the hollowed-out "belly of the beast."

The scene onstage on September 26, 1911 was unbelievable. It took a dozen stagehands to carry out the "turtle-tortoise-fish or whatever it is," and turn it on its back on the center of the stage. Its abdomen had been sliced open, fitted with metal eyelets, which held a long thread of steel chain. Before the escape was attempted, Houdini was forced to sign a document that would release the owners of this monster from any liability should Houdini fail the test.

Then the steel chain was slackened, and Houdini crawled into the carcass, pausing to spray some strong perfume where his head would lie. He gave a signal, and handcuffs and leg irons were fastened to him. Then the committee went to work. Smiling through their labor, they tightened the chain, passed it around the creature's back, and secured it with locks. The cabinet was then placed around the beast and the orchestra struck up.

After fifteen minutes, the screens of the cabinet were thrown open, and there was Houdini, "grease-covered, pallid and perspiring," holding the handcuffs and leg irons aloft in triumph. On examination, the beast was as securely locked as it had been before. Houdini was not unscathed. His first words were to the stagehands, requesting them to open the windows and give him some air. Houdini had underestimated the toxicity of the arsenic solution that the taxidermist had used to preserve the sea monster, and, locked inside, he had been adversely affected by the fumes.

    Its bigger than yours!!
It is another hot day here. At the last minute a non fur friend and I decided to meet up and head out in order to beat the heat. In addition to driving around, stopping at stores, etc we made a stop at Doogie's in Newington

I just had to get this monster 16 inch long hot dog with the works (chili, cheese, fried onions, and peppers). it is bigger than yours and features a natural casing:

    Monster Dog!
They were out of the extra long buns that I saw on Roadfood so it was nestled in between 2 regular buns instead. I had to break it in half to eat it.

I devoured the entire dog, all of my drink, and most of the fries! It was da shit!

Anyone dare me to try this massive burger the next time I am there:

    4. This will create a never-ending cycle of icon squee. Whoo!

Here is what [info]icingheart picked for me:

The Last Unicorn, mmm. I love that movie so much. It's one of my favorite things from childhood. DAMN YOU PETER S. BEAGLE.

Squee! Sam and Joon from 'Benny and Joon'... one of my all time favorite movies. It makes my heart happy.

This is my 'book worm' icon =D It's the one I use when I am feeling bookish, and/or talking about books.

Brick, ah, my sweet Brick! My favorite character from Anchorman.

    The Dark Knight!
I saw The Dark Knight today and it was AWESOME. It was amazing, it lived up to the hype. Bale was great as always, and Heath Ledger was perfect as the Joker, he is so effortless and at ease playing him. I was pleasantly surprised at Aaron Eckhart, I didn't think Harvey Dent was such a big character, he is great and very dark as Two-Face, my personal favorite bat villain :) I want to see this in I-Max, gotta find one near me, Denver most likely.Later.

    Busy busy
The last couple of weeks have been nightmarishly busy, though I have made a bit of time for some gaming, mainly to attempt de-stressing. Yes, attempt. My attempts are rarely successful, really.

Despite how unpromising that paragraph sounds, things are going tolerably well in my life right now. I'm just feeling a bit overwhelmed by studies, work, and household issues. And cats. Let's not forget all the cats. Indoor cats, outdoor cats, so very many cats. Really, though, my major source of stress right now is studies. I'm attempting to get into the PACE (an alternative teaching certification) program here, and preparing to take two PRAXIS exams, one in mathematics and the other in physics. It's less than a week until the tests now, and I feel completely unprepared. I've had to do so much reviewing, and I'm nowhere near finished. Meanwhile, due to family problems of his own, my brother needs a place to stay for a while and asked about staying here. I couldn't say no, though I'm not terribly thrilled with the idea. Right now, the trailer is a total wreck, with the spare room completely filled with packed boxes that I don't have the time or energy to move. But they've got to be moved by the end of the month to clear room.

On another front, Pieprz is home and is now a housecat. For an indefinite period. She still needs medication three times a day to help with her problem, though there's a chance she'll grow out of it. She might still need surgery in the future, as her anatomy seems to be a teeny bit odd, but for now, we're managing. Apart from a tendency to pounce and nibble on my toes, she's a darling. Fluffy and Sleepy are terrified of her, Valentino is furious that she's inside, and Murphy (an outside cat himself) is her toy. I keep her (at the moment) in the spare room (yes, the one crowded with boxes), and I let Murphy in with her so she won't be lonely. She's quite attached to him, and he's relatively laid-back about it, despite her fondness for chewing on his tail and ears. So, I've also got to manage to clear room in my room (another overly-crowded-with-boxes location) and get her moved back here before the end of the month. All while trying to find time to review a year's worth of math and physics. No pressure. *pulls out hair*

If I could just shoot my noisy neighbours, I'm sure I'd feel much better. Why must they sit around in their cars with the bass pumping when I'm trying to sleep? Why must I continually call the police to get them to turn the damned thing down so I -can- rest? Grr. I try to allow ten minutes before calling, of course, but ...there are times I just want to rig up speakers near their homes and blast Celine Dion, Barbra Streisand, Barry Manilow and Bette Midler music at them. Around the clock. Of course, I'd have to somehow shield my own home from that, and if I could figure out how to manage that, this wouldn't be a problem at all. I wonder how expensive it is to build those sound-insulating walls that some places have alongside their freeways...

Well, enough rambling, time to get back to a bit of studying, then preparing for bed. I'm exhausted, again.

    Company Focus: Mokuba Ribbon
I have been a fan of Mokuba brand ribbon for years and years, ever since i first came across it in the Pearl Art and Craft in Boston, MA. If you aren't familiar with Mokuba, they are a Japanese company which produces extremely high quality ribbons and trims of unusual, creative design. Yesterday, i took a lunch-break trip to their NY design center, featuring nearly 45,000 Mokuba trims.

My intent was to purchase a range of ribbons to be used on a very small collection of couture hats i'm going to produce for Spring 2009; Mokuba's products are expensive, but i'd only need a few yards to do the half-dozen hats in the collection, and i wanted top-quality. The sales help in the design center greeted me and my companion (a fellow first-hand at Parsons on Shrek) immediately upon entering and asked our business. I mentioned my millinery collection, that i was looking for small quantities for one-of-a-kind hats; we were ushered to a special back room.

The room was full of discontinued ribbon styles, for which they had only single or partial spools remaining. They gave me a basket, told me to fill it, and claimed they would then price the basket at a rate i would not refuse to pay. I did exactly that, and they held up their end of the bargain. I was able to get a large quantity of couture ribbon i otherwise wouldn't have been able to afford to splurge on. (Mokuba's ribbons can be $50/yard or more--i had planned on buying single-yard cuts for my hat collection. Instead i wound up with spools of each style instead of a couple yards worth.) I couldn't have come up with a better scenario more suited to my purposes!

Weeee back from the DC Big Flea market at Dulles Expo...STUFF!
Wow it was great, 2 buildings, 1200 venders full of stuff. A lot of it was overpriced crap like dishes and antiques but some of it was really nice. a lot of old Victorian stuff.. like old silver and velvet/silk purses, and old lace dresses and tops and victorian parasols and silver tipped canes and a lot of brass stuff and old guns ect. I wanted to buy a lot.

I bought a old Victorian parasol/unbrella, the silky fabric is ripped to hell but the shaft is metal and wood and the handle is really nice brass and mother o pearl and is made so it comes right off with a latch. Plus I got 2 silky old unbrellas to make parasols out of

and a huge old brass compass.. 1 pair of old eyeglasses that sits on your bridge with no arms and another old pair with blue lneses

plus a HUGE spyglass and a smaller silver spyglass.

and a old Russian brown military courier bag.

i wanted so much more but didnt have cash.

Oh and I got a old copy of Les Miserables.. marked 1800 in the cover.. for FREE.. the women just gave it to me.

    I'll post photos soon.

And if anyone has any experience in making or remaking parasols, I could use the advice. Ive only made one once, 10 years ago. it came out good but I wanna make these really nice :)

    20s dress
I really should dig into the dress I need to make for Lucy Moses...but lordy I'm lacking motivation...And Rob claimed they'd be done at 6. By six they were oh halfway done. Somehow Rob is never right about the amount of time things take...He claims he is, but he's always wrong...It doesn't really matter, but I had planned a nice dinner for the boys and we were gonna go to batman tonight. I have no desire to go to the midnight showing. Plus I'm sure the late shows are sold out already....c'mon robin the goal was cutting it out tonight....

    oh for fuck's sake.

The 6" scale Heath Ledger Joker figure is hitting $100 on ebay. Gawd. Of course I want one, they're awesomely terrifying and cool, I must have one for my dollhouse, but the word is that the wave is recalled. So it may be worthwhile to wait til the first week of madness is over, but after that I will probably have to move quickly because the pegs won't be restocked, whatever is in the hands of the fucking scalpers now is what there is. I try never to pay more than $29 for an action figure, and I've bought one in that range this year already (finally admitting that Hasbro wasn't going to do a mass-market re-ship on the '80s costume Wasp ) so the AF budget is strained. Drat. Why do I not have a teenage nephew who works at Toys R Us?

    Baer Fabrics
Person in LJ was wrong, Baers totally closing. Went there today, they didn't even have a sale on for most of the stuff. So I didn't get all that much. Since there is a ton of material and notions left, wondering if bank will try selling it off or if they will ship & sale it in bulk to someone else.

http://www.whas11.com/news/local/stories/whas11_topstories_080718_baerfabrics.6af94f34.html WHAS had a story on it that seemed like how most the people found out about the sudden closing.

I circled their small parking lot twice and lucked out and got a space in main lot instead of having to park blocks away like I heard some people saying they had too.

If I hadn't bought some boning I would have gotten out of there really cheap, as I just bought 2 materials from outlet room and only 2 yards of 1 non-outlet bolt. So boo to Baer for not even breaking down and having a real sale on their last day. The Asian woman next to me in line only had 1 piece of fabric, and there was a nun couple people ahead who only got some notions. Then there were some people buying insane amount of stuff that they probably could have gotten much better deal on at Hancocks using a coupon.

The elevator broke at @ 4pm, heard they had to pry it open to get people out. So evidently it decided it was closing time a bit early. I had ridden it up to the third floor, then took the stairs as I went floor by floor looking for anything good.

Took a quick video as I was leaving @ 5pm.

    Nice Ride today!
I just got back from a nice ride with [info]radjin and [info]growlcoon . We met around 9:30 AM at Red Apple Cafe in Aptos. I had the BEST corned beef hash I have ever had there. Then we headed up to Alice's via the scenic route. Since I knew the area, I took them on a rather indirect route through the Santa Cruz Mountains, first up 9, then over through Bonny Doon to tour the fire area on Martin road form the "Martin fire" ... Then up Empire Grade ridge to the top, and then we dropped down through Boulder Creek. The weather was perfect. We stopped for pictures along the way. I'll try to get copies soon...

After a nice long lunchtime talk, we parted ways. They headed down to California Extreme, and I headed home, and got the speed on. My tires look like burnt cheese, all black and curdled form the friction in cornering....

    I'll sleep well tonight :)

I can't shut my brain up
I'm lying in bed, in the dark, with the migraine that won't let up, but my brain won't shut the hell up... I'm musing about Dr. Horrible, and thinking about the one thing that really annoyed me about it:

This time it is majorly spoilery, and highly analytical... )

Ok, now that that's off my chest, maybe my brain will shut the hell up so I can get some rest.

And does anyone else have the song "Mr. Horrible" by They Might Be Giants running through their brain after watching the series? Because it's driving me crazy!!!

    What's in a name
A few of my friends have been doing posts about their names, nicknames and how they came about. I figured I'd jump on to the bandwagon and do mine, and see if my other friends here want to jump in.

My name is Lynn Marie, and I am not entirely sure how my mother came about this name, as according to my dad I was supposed to be a Darlene. *shrug*

My first nickname was Lino. My mother called me that, and only when she was EXTREMELY mad at me (which was quite often). The rest of the time she either called me my sister's name or one of the cats. LOL She'd get mad because I'd do things like climb trees, get dirt in my hair (it was down to my bum at the time and we didn't own a shower, just a lions paw tub), play tackle football and all the things a tom-boy does.

Another nickname of mine is Grace/Gracey/Gracie. This one started by my ex, who would tease me about my clumsiness with a "smooth move Grace" every now and again. Then we got into MMORPG's. His character was Jakc Burton (yes, Jakc was purposely spelt that way). My first was Gracey Lawe. If you've seen Big Trouble in Little China, you know where they came from. So many on-line friends became RL friends that Gracey just stuck with me. Besides, it helped when one of my closest friends was called Lin for short and we'd both answer.

My last nickname is Abi. Only JA calls me this (as I am the only one who calls him JA and no it's not short for Jack Ass). Our first date revolved around a wonderful discussion of Revolutionary War history, specifically John and Abigail Adams. Hence the nicknames. :-)

    A phone call away
My Boo just called from the lakehouse. She arrived safely, and is happy my parents are still there to spend time with her and my niece.

She also wanted to tell me she got stung by a hornet this morning! She'd never been stung before, so we didn't know if she was allergic or not. Thankfully she isn't! She said it hurt like heck at first, but she didn't cry or anything. My brave girl!

I had talked to my dad this morning, so he knew she was coming up there. I am so glad he's staying until Monday. He said he'd have a talk with her about school, the changes going on here at home, and how much her mom needs her to be good. I told him not to guilt her into things with regards to me. I'll be fine, and so will she. Her sister is only a phone call away, after all.

I danced on stage at a strip club in Victoria!
I am home. I am so exhausted I can hardly hold my head up. Must nap now.

The trip ended with a quite an exciting surprise. With just under 2 hours left in Victoria, a group of us toddled off to the strip club where friends arranged for myself and the other pole instructor in the group to pole dance on stage! We weren't even sure it was going to happen until we heard the DJ say: "Will the two girls from the cruise ship please report to the DJ booth?"

There were two poles and we gave that club the best performance they have ever seen! And yes, I have video. :)
