elcome to costume_stills, a LiveJournal icontest community devoted to period and historical costumes as depicted in films, art, and any other medium. Moderated by enchantinglight, midenianscholar and olde_fashioned, it is our intent to offer a regular challenge themed to a particular article of clothing, movie, artist, or other costuming-related images, provide friendly competition and like-minded enjoyment with fellow enthusiasts.


magine stumbling upon a forgotten trunk hidden away in an attic. Upon lifting the heavy lid, you discover a lost treasure from the past. Rich silks of vibrant colors, dresses centuries old, tunics you never witnessed dazzle your eyes. Just for a moment, you are able to step back into time, to catch a glimpse of what was. An exquisite garment made entirely by hand, by women who have long ceased to tread upon this earth, is yours to admire. The seamstresses' skillful fingers have left precious imprints on our hearts and imaginations.

hile few of us will ever be fortunate enough to ever come across a real period gown in the manner described above, and while we can never go back in time, we can at least appreciate those things that once were. We express our enthusiasm for them by sharing them with others.

t is a goal of this community to spread the knowledge, increase the enjoyment, and perpetuate the memory of historical costumes.



No animations allowed. This is, after all, a stills contest. ;-) Use only the image(s) provided unless otherwise specified. You may use brushes, text, and non-animated effects to create your entries.

Do not reveal your icon to anyone until after the winners are posted. It means that all entries should stay anonymous and should be new, made especially for the challenge. This also means you cannot upload your entry into your userpics until AFTER the challenge results have been announced.

You may NOT vote for yourself, nor get your friends to vote for you, NOR manipulate the results of the polls for your benefit. This INCLUDES submitting icons under two different usernames, or purposely voting with two usernames. Violaters will be dealt with appropriately.

Entries must conform to LJ's standards of either GIF, JPG, and PNG format, and must not exceed 40kb or 100x100 pixels.

Host your entry on an image hosting site such as ImageShack or Photobucket and provide a direct link to your icon.

This is a clean community, therefore icons depicting nudity and obscene remarks are not allowed. (or racist, sexually suggestive, slash, or otherwise innapropriate content)

You may use an artist's entry icon ONLY with their permission and after the challenge has ended, and you must credit the artist in keywords if using their icons.


n keeping with a fortnightly schedule, new challenges will be posted on Wednesday, and entry submissions will be accepted for one week, until the following Wednesday, when voting will be opened. The results and will be announced before the commencement of the next challenge, and the winners' banners will be made at the moderator's convenience.
