Hey all, new member. I joined because I'm trying my darndest to find patterns for kariginu- if any of you have seen Onmyouji (1 or 2) you'll remember the kind of cut sleeve heian style kimono that Abe no Seimei wears around.

For those of you who may not remember/know what I'm talking about-

I have found a lot of sites that delineate how it is worn, what exactly it looks like, and even someone who made one entirely from scratch just by looking at pictures. However, I have not that skill, and am looking specifically for patterns.

Any help? Many thanks.
~K

Mahabharata-related, sort of: central Asian coat?

Hi all—I haven't posted or even visited here before, but I have sort of a long-shot question and, judging by this community's interests, you guys might be able to help me.

I'm a fan of Peter Brook's 1989 film adaptation of (his stage adaptation of) the Mahabharata, with its weirdly international cast, etc. There's a particular article of costuming that shows up in that movie that I'm intensely curious about—but, since I haven't been able to find a single screenshot of it online, I'm hoping that some folks here have seen this film and will recall the item I'm talking about. It's a type of coat; a couple of guys turn up wearing 'em in the second half of the film, when the Kurukshetra War gets going.

Again, I'm screenshotless, so I'll have to rely on my description and your conjectural familiarity. The thing I'm talking about is a tight but bulky short jacket, mostly made I think of wool—almost armorlike. It's got some subdued reddish striped patterns that make me think of Tibetan wool clothing; I noticed what looked like wooden toggles securing bits of it at around the collarbone. Maybe its most striking feature was a pair of . . . almost epaulets—ruffs of long black wool/hair around the shoulders. As I've said, the whole thing (with given the way it was fastened, given the striped wool) had a central Asian, particularly Tibetan flavor to it; obviously the Mahabharata's an Indian work, but Brook was going all over the place in his cultural approach to this production. If the coat I'm looking for is Indian, it's got to be from up north near the mountains.

Anyway, does this strike anyone as familiar? Like I said, you'd pretty much have to have seen the specific film I'm thinking of . . . my worry, honestly, is that this article of clothing was the costumer's brilliant invention.
