Welcome to

cosloli, a community intending to spread the good word that Gothic and Lolita can, and does, include cosplay.

"Bad Lolita" is NOT synonymous with "cosplay Lolita," although many non-cosplayers are fond of using the term in this derogatory sense because it is assumed that all costumes are poor quality. When one is attentive to quality and effort, cosplay Lolita can be just as beautiful as Lolita fashion.

"Cosplay" is short for "costume play" and is a hobby enjoyed mainly by fans of anime and manga. It also extends into the realm of Visual-kei and Gothic and Lolita (which is shortened to "Gothloli" in Japan--this may be confusing to those who consider Gothloli a specific subset of Lolita), as well as maid cafes and fans of sci-fi/fantasy.

Cosplay is essentially the practice of putting on a costume AND assuming the guise of the character or archetype one is costuming as. This is why changing one's behavior to become more ladylike and polite is associated with dressing Gothloli.

Gothloli cosplay is considered part of otaku culture along with anime, manga, and Visual-kei (among other nerdy things, probably). Gothloli FASHION is NOT part of otaku culture. There are other differences between fashion and cosplay, but in my opinion, this is the base of them all. You can discuss this in the community if you wish, because I sure as hell am not going to write about it here.

What this community IS:

~ A home for weekenders, anime con-goers, or anyone who likes to take Gothic and Lolita a step away from fashion into something more extreme or entertaining.

~ A place to share photos and ask for advice on sewing and coordinating outfits, or where to shop.

~ A public forum for amateur cosplayers to learn about Gothic and Lolita styles and how they can be incorporated into awesome cosplay ensembles.

~ A place where we embrace the "Lolita Lifestyle" and Lolita behavior (such as being excessively polite) as a fun and fabulous everyday fantasy, not something to be taken seriously. (People who dress in Lolita fashion do not change their behavior depending on what they're wearing. They just want to be seen as normal people.)

What this community IS NOT:

~ A place for people who were made fun of on

egl to post their photos and complaints. This is also not a community for people who feel they are "beginners" or "not real Lolitas." This community is for people who consciously cosplay Gothloli or Lolita and are damn proud of it.

~ A place for daily Gothic and Lolita fashion. This community is specifically for the Gothloli and otaku blended culture. Even if you wear both the fashion and cosplay on separate occassions, please reserve your fashion coordinates for other communities. The only exception is if your regular outfit has something to do with your cosplay outfit.

~ A Visual-kei cosplay community. Please do not post VK cosplay unless the person you cosplay has OBVIOUS Gothloli influence. (If you know of one, please tell me so I can post it here as an alternative.)

~ A hate community. Again, no "snobby elitist" remarks. I am a snobby elitist. I will ban you.

~ An erotic community. Sex-themed posts or comments will not be accepted. I am talking to the people who are solely into Gothloli for the fetish or for sex-play.

If you don't like the colors, please just tell me so I can change them. I chose a theme that matched the usericon and changed it a little to make it seem less pukey.

The girl in the icon is Alice from the game Londonian Gothics: Meikyuu no Lolita for Nintendo DS. Seriously, if you can find it, snag it, or tell me about it.
