First corsets!
So, having spent some time quietly trying to make corsets, I thought I would upload my first attempts to livejournal. I am self-taught (so far) so I followed the usual route of Simplicity 9769 for first attempt (bought as a kit from venacavadesign) and got the laughing moon 113 patterns at the same time.

What I have learned quite rapidly is that everyone in corsetmakers is right: bought patterns are not the same as self-drafted ones.

The 9769 corset was too generous given the built in ease(!) and when making up the ribbon corset from 113 I followed two separate approaches to see what would happen as there isn't much info online on the ribbon corset. Making these three has really shown me a few things.

Also, Sylvia's wearing a couple of mini top-hats there too...

But anyway, there they are. My first three corsets! I'm currently redrawing the top and bottom of a pattern having drafted my own from the instructions at yourwardrobeunlockd. As the mock-up fit like a glove I am quite excited to see how it turns out!

If you've read this far then thanks!

Corset Number 5
Thank you to everyone who commented on my last posts. The advice you gave has really helped. The wrinkling at the waist is completely gone on one side and greatly reduced on the other. My guess is this is due to figure differences on each side. I like to think if I made a mock up first, instead of just diving into the finished piece, I can probably eliminate it even more. That and adding a couple more bones to support the fabric.

LM113- another version

This is my second version of the Laughing Moon 113 pattern which I just completed.

The bad thing is though, I've fallen in love with this corset now! Good thing I made it as an off-the-rack in a size that will never fit me.

If anyone is interested, I've listed it for sale on my Etsy http://gkcorsetry.etsy.com/

Laughing Moon 113 Ladies' Underbust

This is a sample I made up a couple of weeks ago from the LM 113 underbust corset pattern, which I have had lying around for months but never got around to making up. All in all, I’m quite pleased with how it came out.

Gentleman's Corset
I was pointed in the direction of this community by [info]gk_wheatcroft after making a post in [info]corsetry, something I'm quite thankful for actually. Below is my post as it appeared on the aforementioned community.

This is my first properly corsetry related post and includes some photographs of myself. I've put them all under a convenient cut.

I spend Friday afternoon and evening sewing together the Laughing Moon Victorian/Edwardian Gentleman's Corset for wearing next Saturday at a period-themed birthday party.

I wanted to check that my workmanship and the corset itself was up to continual wear and so wore it from 11am until 10pm today while I went around town shopping and did other menial, everyday tasks. I'm pleased to report that apart from a couple of stitches and the increased difficulty of walking up hill, everything is fine and comfortable.

The one thing I did find the corset eliminated was the lower back pain I normally get from prolonged jaunts around town, so that was something pleasant.

So, without further ado, here are some photographs of myself fully dress and in my unmentionables. Completely worksafe, though why you'd be browsing this at work is beyond me.

Male Corsetry )

NB: In the last photograph the lacing looks wonky, I can assure you that it's merely the way I'm stood, the whole thing is nice and even.

Victorian underbust
I just finished a Victorian underbust for a male client to wear as an undergarment, based loosely on the LM Men's Corset pattern. Outer layer of twill, lining of cotton flatlined to twill. 10" busk, 4 1/4" flat steels next to the grommets, 18 1/4" spring steels, hand-bound, and black-on-black flossing on the last bone in the back because it was too short. I have terrible trouble cutting spring steel, so I order pre-cut lengths. It is slightly more full in the hips than my lovely model pillow allows. Grommets were set using the HomePro with 6ET and 6DB dies.

first-time poster, long-time lurker
hey peoples! I've been a lurker for a while now, have had an interest in corsets for I don't know how long . . . as long as I can remember! I'm needing some information though . . .

First off, I'm going to need to make a corset to wear under my wedding dress this upcoming january. I've decided on Laughing Moon #113, the underbust. I have to have at least two inches of reduction (which I own a corset, and I did lace myself up the other day to make sure I could do it. The only problem is the corset I own is an overbust, and it's black, and the only place I need reduction is my waist. And we all know that black corset under white wedding dress = not good).

I'm planning on ordering from Farthingales LA, and I was wondering if any of you had the pattern and could tell me what fabric yardages, boning, busk, etc. needs are for a size 12, so that I can order everything in one fell swoop.

I'm looking forward to this project! I've made costume bodices and a corset before, but this will be the first really nice one I make. I really don't want to screw it up! Any advice? I have been sewing since I was 7 years old, so I'm experienced enough to at least play around with things I don't understand. Have any of you made this pattern and had difficulties with it?

Laughing Moon #113: Ribbon Corset

Greetings one and all, and thanks so much for the collective wisdom that is shared here.  I'm considering making the Ribbon Corset in Laughing Moon #113.  Has anyone made this pattern before?  (I searched the archives and found a few posts about the Corset Girdle, but none about the Ribbon Corset).

Specifically, I was wondering how much support the ribbon sides give, and also whether there are issues with the ribbons rolling at the edges when it is worn.

thanks!

Chocolate Corset and Laughing Moon #113 ladies corset
I am begun my journey to make "the chocolate corset". I have all supplies gathered, I have adequately modified the pattern. The lady is not a "small" lady and one of the standard pattern sizes should fit her nicely. I did raise the back and lower the bottom. I may have to lower the bottom more or will put a 3-4" "skirt" on the bottom. I hope to keep you up on the progress as I make this corset. It will be the first from this pattern but probably not the last.
Here is the general id )

I thought I would share several references I am currently reading on from time to time. I still look at the standard books always mentioned but Peter seems to have cool things on his site so I thought I would share. )

LM #113
I made a mock up and I am really hating the shape of the Laughing Moon underbust :(
IMO, it comes up too low in the back, is too high on the hips, and the top line directly under the breasts is really clumsy! I'm trying to decide whether to try to alter this substancially or just nix it and crop the LM#100 into an underbust....

le sigh.

Laughing Moon #113 - Corset Girdle
Although the LM113 underbust pattern has been out for some time now, as far as I'm aware (correct me if I'm wrong) no one has posted much about it. I thought I would present the results of my own toying with it, and tell you folks what I thought of the pattern. Perhaps if it inspires discussion and reviews, this post could be memories-ed?

New Laughing Moon pattern
I just received a newsletter from Laughing Moon that they have a new corset pattern:

1)View A - a ribbon corset 1899-1909
2)View B - a corset girdle 1894-1909
3)View C - a man's corset

The pictures look pretty neat and I might buy it at some point.

Just found this....
Laughing Moon will be releasing a pattern for an underbust corset, ribbon corset, and men's corset in June.

There have been recent questions about commercial patterns, so I thought I'd mention it.
