Goth Fairy Bride

So this was my big project of the year. A wedding dress for cousin Alex. Alex had seen one of my corsets with wings and asked me to make a dress for her wedding. She really liked the idea of combining wings and a proper corset.

She loves anything fairy and sent me various images of things that she liked. We discussed colours and she was interested in black and a colour that was in the tartan that Ross would be wearing. I then put together a style board with things she liked.

Style board (click for a bigger image)

From there I did a design drawing:

Alex was a great bride to work with as she had a different vision of what she wanted and was happy for me to interpret that vision. Alex visited to discuss the designs and try on several of my corsets to see what style suited her best. From there we made a few modifications to the idea and took measurements. It was decided to make the outfit with a dropped waist to get a better hourglass look as Alex is boyish on top with very curvy hips.

So one mock-up and several fittings later we had a dress that only needed the decoration. The dress is made from two tone (black/maroon) silk taffeta with a full crinoline, black crystal organza and wedding tulle skirt. The over skirt is designed to be worn either flat or with the gathered front. The corset is made with two layers of coutil one layer of the red silk taffeta and a linking of black silk taffeta. It is fully boned with two boned back panels one just the normal design and one specially adapted for the wings. This allows the wings to be removed for dancing and getting in cars etc. The train attaches to both the skirt waistband and the modesty panel and is also removable for the dancing.

For the decoration I created lots of appliqué flowers and leaves from black silk velvet and the silk taffeta. These then had loads of bead added. Alex had sent me some lovely metal beads in silver to match her tiara and shoes. So I added these as well including a scattering of dragonflies on the train.

I was on hand on the wedding day to get her into her dress and to do wing and train changes. She was very happy with the dress and it was much admired at the wedding.

More pictures of the dress can be found in my gallery at http://www.silverhippo.com/images/wedding_dress/

Oh, god, you made my day!
What a stunning and marvellous outfit, and she absolutely fabulous ! And at least a REALLY alternative bride - I remember having read from someone of this community, but on its own journal, a sentence about the bridezillas saying "I'm sooo alternative... please make me that white dress!" which mades me laugh a lot.

May I ask what you used for a pattern for the skirt/train?... Seems a lot like Truly Victorian's good stuff.
While the skirt is definitely different, the train really reminds me about the butterfly train I used for my own wedding train, but Imay be wrong?... And if I am, I'd like to know were you found it -or drafted it?- because it's sooooo marvellous...

I am happy that I made your day.

So you are the person who gave me the idea for the train. I remembered that someone had used the Truly Victorian butterfly train pattern and laced it up the middle and really thought that is would go well with this design. I love the truly Victorian patterns and have several but not enough time to make them all up.

The overskirt skirt is one that started out a pattern (from one of the big 3 I think) many moons ago (not sure if I still even have it any more). I made it up for several outfits changing it each time. For this version I made a pattern from one of those skirts and then adjusted it to fit and added lots of extra width at the bottom using the slash and spread method. The corset is a little bit of everything from pattern drafting, draping and a front panel from a pattern because I liked the shape.

The wings are not hard to make but are time consuming. bending all that wire also takes it toll on the fingures as well.

That's beautiful, the shade of red in her hair matches the fabric so well. The best part about a non-white wedding dress is that she'll be able to wear it again if she wants. And who wouldn't want to?

Yay! Another bride who wore red! (I wore red at my wedding this past December, but I didn't make my gown as I'm not quite that skilled. :P)

You did a fantastic job on her gown and I'm sure it'll bring her many fond memories of a truly unique gown and special wedding day. And, as posted above me, the advantages of a non-white gown are that you can wear it again!

I especially love the detail on the corset. Did you make the petals and flowers? How on earth did you do that? Embroidery machine? Satin stitch on a regular machine?

I made the leaves and flowers for it. I have just a normal machine that does many variations of zigzag stitch so I used a close together short stitch.

Very nice. Did you use a cage crin for the underlayment?

Yes a full cage crinoline, but I used heavy duty plastic whalebone instead of steel to keep the weight down.

nice work, I especially like your artwork and research.
I see you are in Edinburgh, fantastic city, may I ask roughly how much you charge for this type of piece?

I don’t actually do this a full time job more of a hobby. So I only do one major project a year. I only take on things that are different and new to me and a challenge so each piece is quoted for individually and tend to be very expensive.
