Eric Taylor on BFG - Free concert this Sunday!
On Sunday, July 12th, 2009, Bound for Glory continues our 42nd summertime and welcomes Eric Taylor! Join us, and bring a friend. The show is this Sunday, 8-11pm, in the Cafe at Cornell's Anabel Taylor Hall. The three half-hour live sets start at 8:30, 9:30, and 10:30 pm. FREE ADMISSION for you and a friend! "If you miss an opportunity to hear Eric Taylor, you have missed a chance to hear a voice I consider the William Faulkner of songwriting in our current time." -- Nanci Griffith Eric Taylor grew up in Atlanta, and started playing soul music in his early years. steeping himself in the rich cultural heritage of the black South. He set out to move to California, but only made it to Houston before running out of money, and the musical environment there was just the inspiration he needed. Taylor learned intricate blues guitar stylings from music legends Lightnin' Hopkins, Mance Lipscomb and Mississippi Fred McDowell while working at the Family Hand Club. If you're not familiar with Taylor by name, you've probably heard his songs performed by such people as Nanci Griffith and Lyle Lovett. Among his multitudes of fans and devotees are many musicians who are themselves legends in the singer-songwriter realm. A mesmerizing performer himself, Taylor has toured extensively in the United States and Europe, playing such notable venues as Club Passim, the Bottom Line, Caffe Lena, Paradiso in Amsterdam, Hotel du Nord in Paris, and the Bein Inn in Perth. Listing of New York Senators on the Fence or Opposed to Gay Marriage
20 senators publicly stated their support for equal marriage, 32 are needed to pass the bill. Please check this list and contact your state senator and urge them to support marriage equality for all couples. Marriage is a civil rights issue, nobody should be denied the 1,800 state and federal benefits that come with marriage, such as the right to visit a loved one in a hospital, file joint tax returns, co-adopt kids, and many other rights and privileges enjoyed by heterosexual couples. | | Monday, April 13th, 2009 | 1:06 am [niemandsrose]

taking the bus after dark
Hi all. I'm an incoming grad student looking at housing along the #30 and #10 buses, but hey, I just discovered that they stop running at 9pm and 7pm respectively. How can that be? How late is the library open? How the hell do I get home from the library at closing time? (Plus, 9pm is really early for theatre people. If you even go *see* an 8pm show, you'll miss the last bus, never mind being in rehearsal until 11pm.) Are my only options to either live in Collegetown (eew) or buy a car (eew)? | | Monday, March 30th, 2009 | 11:55 pm [melancholybliss]

Girl Talk ticket for sale
I bought a ticket for the Girl Talk concert this coming Sunday, April 5, but won't be able to go, since I am out of town and no longer want to take that time off from work. I want to sell it, if anyone is interested. $15 is what I paid, so I would like to get that back, but would also take less since it would be ony a partial loss. Let me know if you want the ticket and and I can send you the pdf of the ticket! Current Mood: blah | | Thursday, March 26th, 2009 | 1:28 pm [juicecasting] |
Hello Cornell Students, I thought some of you might be interested in this opportunity. We are a low budget independent feature film currently casting lead, supporting, and background parts. The film is about high school students who get involved in recreational steroid use. We are interested in working with young adults who can bring their own personalities and natural energy to the part, so formal training or experience are not necessary. Below you may find a description of the project, and the roles we are casting. There are also a number of small speaking parts, so any interested parties who don't fit one of the lead character descriptions are encouraged to email us anyhow. The lead and supporting actors will be paid (rate to be determined). We are directing people to send their submissions to juicecasting@gmail.com. Please note, this film will be shooting in the NY Metropolitan area in Summer 2009, so we are looking for people who can work as locals (so either residents of NY/NJ or people who will not need to be housed during the shoot) Best, Lucy ( Read more... ) | | Friday, March 20th, 2009 | 1:21 pm [richips]

ride?
Hi there, I was wondering if anyone happens to be planning to drive from the Boston area to Ithaca on March 31st? I have to get to an internship at Farm Sanctuary and it would be really helpful, as the bus is a bit of a disaster. Any help appreciated. Thank you! x-posted | | Sunday, March 15th, 2009 | 4:27 pm [mhaithaca]

Senseless Desecration
I'm still reeling from the news that the landmark Johnny's Big Red Grill sign was ordered removed from the front of the historic Johnny's building at 202 Dryden Road in Collegetown yesterday morning. I learned about the planned 8am removal a few hours earlier. This was reportedly done by order of the Ithaca Fire Department's fire marshal, Tom Parsons. I'm looking for further details. | | Thursday, March 5th, 2009 | 11:08 pm [dancinggurl01]

Random alumni sighting!
A friend who's a server at a restaurant in Providence (242, where Rich and I had a fabulous dinner last night before the hockey game) suggested Muldowney's Pub, around the corner from Trinity Brewpub, for drinks afterwards. It worked out well! Not only did we get to hang out with the fellow alums we passed along the suggestion to, and not only did one of my fraternity brothers I hadn't seen in years turn up, but we were also joined by Peter McCue '73 Law '78, who randomly came into the bar after a friend's birthday party nearby, and spotted all our Cornell gear. Would you believe he had his original Cornell photo ID card with him? :-) Peter chatted with us for a couple of hours before we all eventually scattered, most of the folks off to their homes in the region within an hour or so drive, and then Rich and me back to our hotel. But as we were leaving and Peter asked us to give his regards to Davy, remember him to Teefee Crane, and visit Zinck's for him, we were able to share the good news that a developer is building a new Hotel Ithaca downtown, and promises a Zinck's Pub. | | Saturday, February 28th, 2009 | 2:56 pm [theperipheral]

Accomodations
My girlfriend and I will be in Ithaca on April 9th and 10th. We are in need of a place to stay that is within 20 minutes driving distance to Cornell. Does anyone know of cheap(ish) hotels, motels, or hostels in the area? Any suggestions are appreciated. Cross posted to ithaca_ny | | Thursday, February 19th, 2009 | 5:33 pm [free_sadie]

Support the Vagina Monologues!
Oh hey, Cornell. If you've not yet heard, there is a rumble afoot! In a nutshell: The Cornell Women's Resource Center's production of The Vagina Monologues was scheduled to happen at Sage Chapel. The production team received confirmation of this last semester. Tickets and fliers were printed. Only last week--three weeks before the performance--Cornell United Religious Works went back on this arrangement, effectively booting the production from Sage. Their reason? The show made them "uncomfortable." And, more importantly, it made anonymous stakeholders in CURW "uncomfortable" to have such a show performed in a space shrouded in religiosity. Behind the cut is a letter written by a concerned supporter of The Vagina Monologues to Kent Hubbell, Dean of Students, and the subsequent response from Ken Clarke, president of CURW. If you find yourself upset at the close-minded actions of the CURW, I encourage you to send your own letters to Ken Clarke (kic2 at cornell.edu) and Kent Hubbell (klh4 at cornell.edu) expressing your concerns. We are already seeing an incredible outpouring of support--if you are so inclined, please add your own. We need all that we can get. ( Letters )ETA: If you are interested in keeping up with this struggle, here is a Web site authored by Don Barry that archives the entire situation: http://cornellactivism.org/Monologues | | Saturday, February 14th, 2009 | 4:45 pm [knux]

Arts & Sciences Grade Option
When I enrolled for classes this semester, I opted to take two classes Pass/Fail, figuring I could change them back to letter grade when the deadline rolled around. Then I completely forgot I did this, and now the deadline's passed. Arts & Sciences says it's pretty strict about "rarely" accepting petitions to change grade option--but what if you're changing from S/U to Graded? Anyone have any experience with this? | | Tuesday, January 20th, 2009 | 1:21 pm [thewretched]

yo.
howdy Ithacans. I'll probably be attending Cornell for graduate school starting later this year, so i've been poking around teh interweb for housing information. Rather than guess and make stupid assumptions, i thought i'd go straight to the masters. So, my question: When is the best time to look for off-campus housing? Any particular areas you'd say are better than others? Landlords you love? Landlords to avoid? You're the best! But only if you answer. kthx. A Question About Classes
Hey! So I have one math class left to take at Cornell, and I was thinking of taking MATH 134/MATH 1340: Mathematics and Politics, which Professor Forrest is teaching. At this point, it's a toss-up between The Art of Secret Writing and this one, but I didn't know how difficult either of these courses is. I'm taking a full load and this is an elective course, so I don't want to take a super difficult course if I don't have to. Is Mathematics and Politics a difficult course? I'm looking at the prelim schedule online, and there don't appear to be any nighttime prelims listed, which I guess is a good thing. What experiences have you guys had? Would I be better off doing The Art of Secret Writing? Thanks for all your help! :) | | Saturday, December 20th, 2008 | 6:35 pm [cosmicwonder]

Taxi Suggestion
I live near the commons and I need to get to the greyhound station around 7 am tomorrow morning. I have a lot of luggage and with the snow, walking is not an option. I heard from a friend that taxi service is not very reliable in Ithaca. Is this true? Are there any taxi companies you would suggest? Thank you! In case you're stranded on campus... Residence halls will remain open and food will be made available for students who are stranded on campus due to travel disruptions; and accommodations for those students will be available through Tuesday, if necessary. Students who are experiencing travel problems are asked to contact their residence hall directors (RHDs). | | Tuesday, December 16th, 2008 | 7:36 pm [angeldesignpro]

Grades trickling in?
Just a heads up, my first grade posted today. Looks like I passed my last PE class! Somewhat anti-climatic, but it means others will probably come soon, so keep an eye out on JTF. Happy holidays! | | Thursday, December 11th, 2008 | 3:05 pm [mhaithaca]

Another generation of work ethic... Can you even imagine working for four decades at the same job, and in all that time, being able to count on your fingers the number of scheduled days of work you'd missed? That just doesn't happen any more, but it was the most natural thing in the world to Bob Petrillose. He loved spending all afternoon with his wife and then all night with dozens or hundreds of hungry students and other area residents. Bob's family has established a scholarship in his name at Cornell's School of Hotel Administration. Contributions may be sent to The Robert C. Petrillose Scholarship Fund, Tompkins Trust Company, Attention Sue Lason, PO Box 460, Ithaca, NY 14851. Calling hours have been scheduled for Friday afternoon from 4:00-7:00pm at McInerny Funeral Home in Elmira, and a service will be held this Saturday morning at 10:00, at the First Presbyterian Church in Elmira. A memorial service is being planned for a later date at Cornell's Sage Chapel. My friend Beth and I went to the Shortstop Deli last night to indulge our Hot Truck craving, and since I knew I couldn't have the MBC Link that was always my signature sub, I got a T-Sui. Well, I actually got a "Grand Slam" Sui, in Shortstop parlance, but it amounts to the same thing. I saved half for today's lunch. More: http://today.14850.com/1211bobpetrillose.html |
