Oh yuss. Because I was thinking today about what a serious impact my Montparnasse love seems to have on my general love of all other kinds, so I decided to make a leetle picspam of all the pretty pretty boys I love to stare at largely influenced by Montparnasse. Uh... two are cartoons... but the all rest are just pretty people!

So I have this weekend off. I also have a lack of kinnosuikazura and vicky_licious, because they will still be off visiting Mel. This means I have absolutely no clue what I am going to do with myself.
This is where I need your help. I have several options, so help me decide!
1) Go to the Tower District and walk around
Pros: Weather should be nice, even though it'll be somewhat chilly most likely. Plenty of random stuff to look at, which is good since I'm broke.
Cons: Will be sorely tempted by things I can't afford.
2) Go to Riverpark and walk around
Pros: Plenty of random stuff to look at, but mostly stores.
Cons: Same as above, will be tempted by stuff I can't afford.
3) Write some of the many things I have been meaning to write for forever and a day
Pros: Something I've been wanting and meaning to do for forever and just haven't had time.
Cons: Will result in me staying in my PJs all weekend.
4) Sit at home and watch DVDs
Pros: Cheap, low effort, would be relaxing.
Cons: Will still result in me being in PJs all weekend. Don't have anything to watch that I haven't yet.
I'm sure there are other options but I can't think of what they would be. If you have alternatives, feel free to offer those.

Hello All!
You may or may not remember me: My name is Sarah, I'm 24 years old, I live in California, and I'm getting married next year.
It's been forever since I updated my trusty livejournal, and wouldn't you know? A lot has happened since then:
1. Matt and I got our wedding rings! Woot! My friend, Doug, (aka: the most wonderful guy a girl could ever have as brother-type-friend) Worked for the same jewelers (the Chicago branch, anyway) that Matt and I bought my engagement ring from. With his inside scoop that the jeweler was going out of business plus a handy employee discount, he was able to get our rings for under half of their original cost!!! He bought them for us right before his job ended and drove them to California for us. In a nutshell: Doug is awesome.
2. I started a new job! I technically started this last Monday with an orientation that went from 2-7, but I didn't actually start on location until Wednesday. I'm a library aide now. Basically, I get to reshelve books, check-in materials, make everything tidy...I know it doesn't sound like rocket-science, but it is a foot in the door. I am now a City employee! This job is unbenifited, but all I need are a couple promotions and a few more hours and I can get things like health insurance (woot), a growing retirement fund (double woot), etc. Plus, I get to work in a library! How cool is that?!
Anyway, the library gig has made me face the inevitable:
3. I finally get to quit my job at the church!!!! Now, don't get me wrong, I don't have anything against the church as a whole. I grew up in that community, and there definitely is a feeling of family with it...however, I cannot deny how unhappy I've been in my work position there. I kept giving my all and they only chose to see 50% of what I was actually doing. (And at $11/hr 4hr/week, it really wasn't worth it.) At my new job I'm going to be getting between 12 and 17hr/week and $.036 more/hr. (I know, big whoop, right? But with those two factors increasing, my paycheck is going be between double and triple what I'm making now.)
4. Matt and I have opened a joint savings account that is just for the wedding. I have committed myself to adding $120 into it every week. In order to do this, I have taken on yet another weekly job: I am now a maid...kind of. I was listening to a friend of mine bemoan the fact that the woman she had hired to clean her house was leaving the area. She was listening to me bemoan the fact that I wasn't making any money at the church. It was more of an "I'll scratch your back if you'll scratch mine" situation. She gets a clean house every week and I get to deposit the money she pays me into the wedding account.
5. I gave up bowling this year to help pay for the wedding. (As did Matt.) That's not going to stop me, though, from going to the bowling alley tonight and pacing for my parents' team. Yay! Bowling!
6. After a semester of haitus, I went back to the bell choir! (As I'm typing this entry, I'm realizing more and more just how much of a dork I am.) It's been really great being with my bell-ringing friends again, being able to make music every week. I didn't realize how important it had been to me and just how much I had missed it last semester.
7. MY WEDDING DRESS ARRIVED ON WEDNESDAY! I know that it's going to be torture (much like having the rings around) to have my dress for the next 10 months and not to put it on and flounce around Matt from time to time. Everybody keeps commenting on how early I got it, but it took them 3-4 months to ship it out and I wasn't sure how long alterations were going to take because I ordered it blindly. Thankfully, the dress fits perfectly and it is 1000 times more gorgeous than I had imagined!
8. I'm in my last semester before I graduate! It's only one class and this class is fairly low-pressure so far. It's French liturature from the 12th-18th century--a lot of Chansons de geste and tales about King Arthur. It's a lot of fun, and I'm glad it's my last class. (Even if the school IS trying to screw me over saying I need to take one more class in remedial French--yeah, right!)
I'm sure there is more that is going on in my life, but it's 12:20 and I have an appointment with a couple dogs who need their afternoon walk. I can't say that I will be better about updating the trusty livejournal, but I'm very willing to try!
I miss everyone here!

So inspirational was my little jaunt to Groupe Hugo that I trotted off to the library and checked out a book called Carnet de Barricades, which is full of memoirs and letters and poems and stories about the Paris barricades from 1830-1871. Near the back is a poem by Verlaine, undated and labeled "Des morts." I started thinking about it while reading that article about LM as a work of history.

Haha. My first French paper, a few weeks earlier in the semester, came back with an A and glowing comments about my writing style. Of course, the assignment for my first French paper involved making up a Belle Époque character and writing a one-to-two-page short story about them, and I learned most of my French from reading novels. Piece of cake. This latest assignment--the one I stayed up all night revising on Monday--was an essay, and I have read exactly zero formal academic works in French. So of course this one came back as one giant scribble of red pen, with comments to the effect that the style is as graceful as a one-legged blind baby elephant. (No, she didn't actually say that, but I had no idea you could fit the word 'maladroit' that many times onto two pages.)
Obviously this means I need to get my ass to Groupe Hugo and read some of the articles there. Dammit, you can't learn if you can't see how it's done.
[one hour later] I've read about half of this and it's utterly fascinating: all about Les Misérables as a work of history, about the changes between the 1848 draft and the final version in 1862. I can't say it's going to improve my formal writing, but god is it shiny.

1. Orkney beer is experiencing some fail. "It has been claimed its Viking-branded bottles have an aggressive theme." Laugh.
2. In our bathroom, one sink has taps that are both labelled 'cold'.
3. CuteOverload goes in with Martha Stewart Online for a cute pet costumes contest for Hallowe'en. And there is a dog. dressed like a lobster.
4. For those who, like me, find this kind of thing awesome, UglyOverload makes all our lives better with this video of a snail infected by liver flukes. A word of warning: it is pretty gross. In an awesome way.
5. Malgorzata Kruk's deviantart gallery is amazing. And we mean that.
6. Also Mari Kasurinen's gallery, featuring My Little Cthulu.
7. Spore's free download of Creature Creator is extremely cool. Admittedly it is huge and takes a million hours to download, but--very cool, right?
8. Lastly, Kel Barteski's website contains innumerable wonderful beautiful things, but Tiny Art is one of the best. Scroll down to the ones about beautiful women! They are leetle masterpieces.

I don't intend to talk extensively about my opinions on Tim Burton's upcoming Alice in Wonderland, but just brief:
If he messes this one up, I'm going to be angry.
(And I'll be expecting him to make a Dracula with Johnny Depp as the lead and Helena Bonham Carter as Mina, because that's just my luck.)

Package from the ever wonderful wao_wao came in the mail today, which included our copy of the Revue 2008 mook.
Don't take my lack of all caps as a dearth of reaction. I can't even think to all caps. Every single person in this thing, even the ones who are normally not particularly my cup of tea, looks beautiful. I admit there are a few of the musumeyaku pics that are a bit high fashion for my taste and end up just making the dears not look like themselves, but all in all? Best ¥1500 I have spent in a very long time. And Asuka, oh my god Asuka. Yes please. Just yes.
And unrelated but sort of related, at least in my head? Dai-chan and her big ole dorky wink in Moses Supposes is the most adorable thing I have seen in I can't even tell you how long. I giggled so hard I made my stomach hurt and then I watched it again and cried because she's obviously so happy and it makes me happy to see her happy and... yes. Now I'm sniffly again.
I think it's bed time.

Ok, so wedding weekend... Tuesday, flew in to Greensboro from London. looked through kids photos for pics of Katherine and packed for a drive to Virginia. Wednesday, picked up grandmother's car, shopped for wedding presents, got them wrapped, and headed up to Virginia. I stopped at VA City on the way to hug Brian and print out the dicections to Katherine's house which I had forgotten. I made it to her house by mid to late afternoon. It was great seeing her. I got a tour of her new apartment which is a cute two bedroom with a great view of the mountains. The place is about twice the size of my place and less than %25 of my rent. They really need some furniture. poor Katherine was feeling the pressure from jody about the abundance of stuff with no where to go. with out furniture she was basically still living out of boxes.
After a doing some catching up and stuff, we got into wedding stuff, making of notes and lists, planing how to get every thing done. There were the decorations for the receptions, getting nails done, making slide show, writing and printing programs, making cd of music for the cerimony and the reception, meeting the lady at the reception venue, steaming the dress, fixing my bridesmaid dress, checking the flowers, checking the cake, table name places, gluing the ring bearer's pillow, getting petals for the flower girl, printing and framing photos, gifts for the bridesmaid, and a million other little things to get done in just two day! and two short days because the second day we had to be at the rehearsal by 5. believe me, the To-Do lists where impressive!
Thursday night we meet Katherine's mom for dinner. She had already eaten (forgetting about having plans with Katherine), manged to show up 25 minutes late (even thought her hotel was a two minute drive away), and manged to say such classic lines as "but honey, don't you remember how it was at our wedding, oh no, you wouldn't, oh well" (the women manages to forget that she fail to invite her only daughter to her wedding). I could have hit her. How can some one be so self absorbed and cruel?
The rehearsal was a bit of a mess but Jody had a very sweet cousin who did a great job organizing ever one and made it all work (even if it did take like 2 hours to rehearse a 20 minute cerimony). The rehearsal dinner was at Jody's mom's house. There were about 30 to 40 people there I think. It was a massive group to cook for but she handled it well. Katherine and Jody played the slide show with photos from childhood till they got together. They also gave out the bridesmaid's gift bags and the groomsmen's gift cards, and what not. The dinner was fun. I sat at a table with Nikka, Leia, and Emily (Leia's roommate). We had a pretty good time talking about random stuff. Both Nikka and Leia were very sweet about my art they has seen online. We also did some basic catching up.
That night was long. I was driving Katherine to her hotel, which meant I had to wait till she was ready to go. As the most important person in the room, she has a million people to talk to and we didn't get out of there till pretty late.
The wedding day was an even longer day. I got up at 7something am to get ready, took Brian to Jody's and then get to Katherine's hotel by 10am (using the opportunity to steal a much nicer hotel breakfast than my hotel had). I then sat around while she got ready and then had to rush her out of her hotel to get to her hair appointment by 11am. It was a beautiful hair down style, lovely curls and I got pointers from the stylist about how to get the veil to stay in. We grabbed some fast food on the way to the church, where we were shortly joined by the other bridesmaids. Everyone was getting ready while I was running around delivering things to the chapel, sewing buttons on the groomsmen coats, making sure the music cd was played at the right time, etc. Again, Jody's cousin was there to help make sure every thing worked out, thank god. A few people stopped by the girl's changing room including Katherine's mom and dad. The flower girl was under foot a lot of the time being totally adorable. Katherine scolded me for cursing in front of her, eh the kids got to learn these words some day, right?
Katherine was totally no ready in time for the photographer, in fact we where over an hour late. Oh well, we got some photos taken as the first of the guest were arriving. Katherine was ridiculously beautiful looking. I really couldn't get over how wonderful she looked or take my eyes off her. The dress was perfect and so was her jewelry. Then whole thing sort of got to me some, it was hard to be so cynical. Every one was just so excited and what not.
Any way, be for we knew it, it was time to start lining up and walking down the aisle. we did the walk in reverse order from how close we were to the bride so i was last. here was the order: Cortney, Emily, Susanne, Nikka, Leia, then me. Brian was the one who I was paired with for the walk, which was a bit too couple-ly for me but perfect in ever other way because Brian is my good friend, it is our friendship that lead to Katherine meeting Jody, and I didn't even know the other boys on Jody's side.
The cerimony was mercifully short. which was good, too much more of the god shit and I would have to gag. the priest actually said something to the effect of "marriage, between a man and a woman, as god intended." super traditional, painfully so. but the actual 'I Do' part was sweet. both Jody and Katherine spoke very quietly and sincerely to each other. I was very proud of myself for remembering all my part and didn't lose the ring or anything. the whole thing was only about 15 to 20 minutes, only a little longer than the walking in and out.
Post-cerimony was time for more photos. There were a lot of photos really. The photographer was sweet and seemed to know what he was doing.
any way, after all that it was finally time for the reception....

Awwww, somebody posted a Marie-Suzette to the Les Mis section of ff.net. I should be dismayed at this final sign that my fandom is going down the tubes, but--I find it kind of cute, actually.
Tonight, in my early-music ensemble, I sang Soprano I for the first time in my life! Although, given that it was on a rather intricate early-Renaissance piece, I can't really claim to have sung melody, just the part that happened to have all the high F's. It was a lot of fun.
General chorus is a pain in the ass though. On the one hand we've got 'Die Meere' by Brahms which is gorgeous, and a kickass arrangement of 'How Can I Keep from Singing,' but on the other hand we've got some stupid shit that tries to be edgy by changing key and time signatures every other measure and just ends up sounding crappy and unmusical. Also, it being general chorus, half the people there could not stay in tune if they had a pitch pipe glued to their ears and can't be arsed to pronounce German correctly. However, we're going to have concert t-shirts that say "Hold me, I'm a fermata," which just makes me happy.
Nose has been running all day, and there is a Nerd Death Plague making the rounds of campus. If I get sick over fall break I will chokeabitch.

...except when I'm on stage at Spring Awakening and trying to cry unobtrusively because Henry Stram (Adult Men) is completely heart-wrenching as Moritz's father.
So, I have now seen Spring Awakening three times, which I wouldn't have predicted, seeing as I am approximately 10 years older than most of the people in the cast and the themes of teen angst don't really resonate with me. But, the first time I saw it was free, the second time was from stage seats, and last night was to see an understudy as Melchior.
The show does have some gorgeous use of lighting, dedicated and enthusiastic actors, and I do like the concept of the songs as sort of monologues. What I don't like is a lot of the lyrics, the tacked-on happy end song, and some of the dialog. It seems like it almost succeeds despite itself, and with a poor cast, I don't imagine it would fare well. Thankfully, I didn't see a poor cast.
( blah blah blah blah )
Anyway, that's enough SA for me, I think. Afterward, we got sneezed on repeatedly by a homeless guy with a sneeze like one of those revolving sprinklers. Great way to end the evening.

I'm in that kind of mood where I want to just curl up in a ball on the floor and not think about anything I want/need to get done, whether it's the increasingly-improbable-looking Québec trip or my homework or the laundry that needs to get put away. Ughhhh. Québec Les Mis is wearing on me the most, because I had so many chances to see it earlier in the summer and I didn't bother, and now it's closing in a week and a half and I have no transportation. Unless I want to take the bus (18 hours each way), the train (badly scheduled and expensive), or drag my car up from Washington DC, go on closing weekend, then pay to keep my car in Northampton for a week until I can drive it back down the next weekend.
