05:19 pm - Virtual Tucker Hotel
The general consensus in the Virtual Corflu was that we'd all like to do it again. So Bill Mills has set up a Virtual Fan Lounge, separate from the Corflu one, and we'll be holding our first events this weekend.

I've also done a fanzine to explain some of the background to - and promote - the Virtual Fan Lounge. Yes, a fanzine to promote a chat-room. Look, this is The Fandom Formerly Known As Fanzine Fandom, so it makes some kind of karmic sense, OK?

The first issue of Virtual Tucker Hotel is available at (where else?) http://efanzines.com/VTH/index.htm

04:41 pm - Corflu Silver Virtual Con Suite transcript available
I have an almost-full transcript of the Corflu Silver Virtual Con Suite, from the morning of Friday 25th to the evening of Sunday 27th. This is stitched together from the transcripts that both Geri Sullivan and I kept over the weekend.

It would probably be unfair, from a privacy point of view, to post the transcript on a web-page or other publicly-accessible places. But if any fan wants a copy, they can e-mail me at peter "at" burdonvale.co.uk.

The transcript is almost 70,000 words (424k) and, as with most chat-rooms, people talk (or type!) over each other in places. But there's a lot of interesting fannish discussion and humour (intentional or otherwise!), so worth a read. But then, I would say that, wouldn't I?

10:22 pm - The Virtual Alternative to the “Where Is Our Fandom Going – and How Do We Get There?” Panel
OK, so I kept a transcript of what was said in the Virtual Corflu chat room during the “Where Is Our Fandom Going – and How Do We Get There?” Panel, and a suitably summarised version is behind the cut. Since I'm not sure that everyone knew I was transcribing, I've left people's screenames "as is," even when I know the person behind them. (Some, to be fair, are the same as their livejournal usernames anyway.) Feel free to de-cloak yourselves in the comments if you want.

read on... )
And if you think that comes over as disjointed, you should have seen the original transcript...

09:49 am - Corflu GOH
According to Mike Glyer, the Corflu Guest of Honour (traditionally selected at random from all attending fans not previously honoured) for this year is Andy Hooper. So Andy will now be making the main speech at the brunch banquet on Sunday. Also to be announced at the banquet will be the results of the Faan Awards (_"Not quite as expensive to vote in as the Hugos"_ - [info]kevin_standlee) and the (s)election of the Past President of the fwa...

08:22 am - Non-Corflu Fanac?
Whilst hanging around in the Corflu chat room, I idley edited the wikipedia entry on Scrabo Tower to include a reference to The Enchanted Duplicator. As one does.

Does this count as fanac? [info]gerisullivan reckons yes.

08:42 pm - Corflu Virtual Consuite
The Corflu Virtual Consuite totally skunks the Corflu LJ connection I started in Toronto and continued last year. Tis fun, and I can see my productivity going down the tubes for the rest of the weekend.

05:49 pm - The boogie-woogie Corflu
Despite United Airlines' best efforts to keep me from Corflu by
stranding me in San Francisco with a broken down connecting flight, I
made it in last night to find that my hotel room is exactly ten
seconds from the main con suite (across the corridor and two doors
down). This, I can live with.

Having been awake for 27 hours before crashing I didn't feel much like
the life and soul of the party but oddly enough I seem quite perky
this morning, so I shall venture forth shortly. (I only went online to
see if the Corflu program book was available on the website, since the
emailed copy from the Katzes arrived just as I was about to walk out
the door and I didn't stop to print it; alas, it seems not). I did go
out for a superb steak with Claire Brialey and Mark Plummer, hung out
in the con suite meeting the usual suspects (and being asked by Don
Anderson if I was Joyce Scrivner -- well, really!), and finally
adjourning to the smoking consuite where I managed to snag a seat next
to Ted White (this is known technically as being 'under the hammer').

Fanzines so far: WHISTLESTAR from Len Bailes, who still looks younger
than me; INCA from Rob Jackson, who still looks more respectable than
me; two copies of CHUNGA from Hooper and Byers, one of which I must
give back I suppose; and something peculiar on one sheet by Nic Farey,
who still looks weirder than me...

10:25 am - Vegetarian restaurants
For anyone interested, I went searching for vegetarian restaurants in Las Vegas. Here are a few lists of restaurants and stores.

I've been to Go Raw and enjoyed it. Some of the Ethiopian restaurants look interesting. Any of the locals know about Cottage Cafe or Meskerem? I think most truly vegetarian/vegan places are not actually on the Strip. Indian is usually pretty safe. Thai is too although I worry a bit about possible use of fish paste. Some people seem to think that you can still eat fish and be a vegetarian. Actually I'm very tempted to try Ronald's Donuts Vegan alternatives. It is operated by Buddhists. Whole Foods is in Las Vegas but it says 9 miles away.

09:41 am - Corflu Silver rah!
Just a week to go to Corflu Silver. Due to tedious mundania, I won't be able to make it. But I will probably be spending as much of the weekend as I can on the computer, with this community open in one browser and the video link/chatroom at http://www.ustream.tv/channel/corflu-silver-virtual-con-suite in the other...

02:57 pm - Twilltone K. Armadillo is away
Twill 'Dillo has embarked on his epic adventure, complete with pictures of the fun stuff he did at Corflu 24. We hope that one of two things will happen:

1. The recipient will love Twill so much he keeps him forever.

2. The recipient will take Twill to another con, take pictures of his adventures there, and send him along to another fan in another part of the country.

Twill has crashed at Pat Virzi's place for years... it's time for him to move along and be a semi-permanent houseguest somewhere else.

(If I can get the photos from Pat V I will try to post some here.)

04:24 pm - Another damned conreport
I've posted a conreport at my own LJ. See hot unexpurgated trisexual action! Spot the errors of fact and memory! Tell me all about the cool conversations I missed while stuck in the consuite listening to Ian Sorensen tell mummy-mummy jokes! Act without thinking! Pub your ish!

09:57 am - A surprisingly musical Corflu
When [info]fredcritter dragged me off to my first Corflu 21 years ago, he left his guitar at home and packed a slide projector instead. Much though fanzine fans talk and write about music rather a lot, Corflu seemed the kind of convention where a music circle was unlikely to be found. Even sitting in the corner and playing quietly didn't seem the thing in those days.

The Corflu 3 program featured music from Ted's band on Saturday night. I forget whether it was live or recorded -- I think there was an equipment complication or somesuch, and they ended up making do with something less than they'd planned. The Corflu Quire program featured a concert from Graham Charnock Saturday night. There was more, surprisingly more than the Texas-shaped dinner gong Pat Virzi wielded at Opening Ceremonies and the Sunday Banquet. Pat brought a keyboard in for Ted, and Teresa Cochran played dulcimer. Graham put a small sampling of that on YouTube:

Teresa and Ted in the consuite Thursday, tuning, checking out the keyboard, a bit of conversation. John Purcell is at the far end of the small circle of chairs; James Taylor is sitting next to Teresa, and Jim Caughran is next to John.

Teresa playing, with background consuite noise.

Graham took more video, which he'll be posting after he gets back home. Username "cartiledge" While you're waiting for them, you might enjoy and/or be bewildered by his Old Man videos.

03:32 pm - Pat Virzi Rocks!
I'm enjoying the heck out of this convention (though missing you lot (y'all) not able to attend). We've had lots of fanzines, and plenty of egoboo to go around. And Texas wine! Pat has worked around the clock to make this thing a success, including gorgeous publications, well-organized systems, a very pleasant hotel & staff, and home-baked brownies. Must leave the bar now, we're heading out for BBQ.
