Looking for Freelance Web Developers [11 Mar 2009|11:56am]

kfpoore
The company I work for is currently looking to redo its website. Unfortunately, I'm not too super keen on web development.

I am looking to work with a web developer to redo our site. I'm looking for either a freelancer or an [online] interactive agency (specializing in only that, nothing else).

If any of you have dealt with someone that you would recommend (ethically and creatively), please let me know.

Personally, I'm looking for someone who can do professional development on wordpress cms (who can customize the shell, not just design templates). Below are two examples.

Brains on Fire
Principals

We will more than likely create the design. We just need someone to implement and provide usability feedback.

You can reply here or email me at kris[at]idgroup.us

Thanks!

Looking For Guest Bloggers! [20 Oct 2008|02:02pm]

offsetmedia
[ mood | creative ]

Hey All!

I am looking for guest bloggers for my blog!  Its called 12 Point Type.  For Designers, By Designers. What else is there to say. The best graphic designers in North America are all about the 12 Point Type. If you are a graphic designer or want to reach graphic designers, this blog is for you.

Wonder why this would be worth your time and energy, have some reservations?  Please know that this would be an excellent opportunity for you to get your name out there.  As we all know in this day and age (and occupation), its all about "Personal Branding".  I can totally understand where you are coming from, if you have any reservations.  It's best to come from the mindset that, the more you get your name out there the better it is for you.  It is a "small world after all"....

If you are interested, please let me know!

Opportunity for a publishing credit - create an article on a topic of your choice [16 Oct 2008|11:59am]

ladycatherina
Hi everyone, I invite all the artists in this community, and anyone else you may know, to submit artwork or writing to our new literary/artistic/cultural/nature and travel writing/scientific webzine Synchronized Chaos!

Information on the zine and how to submit, from the Facebook group http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=20763137372&ref=mf :

This is all of our new brainchild, an art/cultural/literary/scientific/social commentary/essay webzine tentatively called "Synchronized Chaos" (referring to some kind of not-obviously-apparent logic that emerges spontaneously from randomnity, basically a fun way to have a theme without having a theme.)

Sort of a way to help the aspiring artists we constantly meet to get their names out there and spotlight some excellent work which should have an audience but the artists don't want to go through the publication process. And to give people committed to worthwhile causes a way to speak out or to use their personal experiences to educate others.

Everyone's invited to submit (and everything should be accepted, unless it's obscene or hateful). If you are interested please send a submission via email anytime this summer. We're working towards setting up a regular editing board and designating people to handle certain kinds of submissions, but for now you may use my email, cedeptula@sbcglobal.net

We're online at http://www.synchchaos.com with a lovely format designed by Tabitha Smith (http://www.tabithagracesmith.com) and invite you to check it out!

We are not a paying market as of yet but hope to become one as we grow and sell advertising and/or host contests. The magazine's online contents will remain free to provide artists and writers with the greatest level of exposure possible.

So far we have received a good variety of submissions, and look forward to more! We're also [info]chaos_zine on LJ and would be a publishing credit for any visual artist or writer to put on his/her bio or proposal or resume.

You may either pitch or send a completed product (attachments OK but prefer writing or thumbnails or JPEG images pasted in the body of the email.) Please put "Synchronized Chaos Submission" in the subject line and please feel free to include an artist statement or bio if you would like.

Also - our magazine is as much about building community and relationships with artists as it is about publication. We'd be happy to see artists and writers post and chat with each other in [info]chaos_zine or on the Facebook page and would be glad to comment/critique or dialogue with you about your work if you would like.

Economy Bailout Song: AIG, Freddie Mac, Lehman Bros [14 Oct 2008|02:44pm]

offsetmedia
[ mood | exhausted ]

I don’t need to tell you this, but our economy is doing just horribly.  Just like everyone else in America, when I found out the news about AIG, Freddie Mac and Lehman Brothers…I was floored, flabbergasted.

You see I worked at AIG, about 3 - 4 years ago; and during their new hire orientation - which lasted 4 hrs - about 90% of the discussion was concentrated on how big and powerful AIG was.  AIG was the parent company of “hundreds” of smaller companies; had thousands of employees; and was making millions of dollars in investments.  At the end you were left thinking, “Wow, I work for a great and powerful company.”  But anyway, I digress.

With all that is happening, I thought that we could use a laugh or two.  Here are a couple of guys who made a very funny song about the state of the economy.

Looking for Critique [09 Oct 2008|01:30am]

copywriterblog
I am about to release my first Sales Letter ever and I'd like some critiques before I do.

The launch date is Friday October 10th (tomorrow, although that's only because it's past midnight).

I expect brutal honesty.  I would like to develop my skills as quickly as possible so I'm not interested in being coddled.

I would appreciate any feedback that you have listed on my post or here.

My first Sales Letter ever can be found here: http://copywriterblog.livejournal.com/

Thanks,

Education Reccomendations? [14 Aug 2008|11:50am]

dangergirljones
I am not a copywriter by trade, but I work in a very writing intensive industry (PR) and would like to strengthen my writing and editing skills.

Does anyone have a recommendation for an online class in the subject?

I've googled, but only find 1) Certificate programs that are career-oriented to the field or 2) Random online classes from "online universities" that I question the validity of.

Thanks in advance for any offerings.

Arguing with Joel [14 Aug 2008|01:03pm]

[ mood | creative ]

I just read fellow blogger Joel Kirstein’s blog about Superbowl 43’s logo and I must say I disagree. I feel it works. I’m not scared that I’m only a small business owner vs. his 25 years in creating things like this. I’m not scared to admit that I find myself liking a flat simple style vs a 3D, color on every corner to show depth piece of art.

I just get it. I feel logos for some of these events are absolutely too grand. I don’t feel a piece of art needs every little trick to make it stand out. Yes I know in the past they are not like this, but that helps 43’s to stand out in my mind. The 0’s in the date do not distract from the readability. When I read it for the first time I thought “Hmm, the Superbowl is on Feb. 1st next year.” See, no confusion! I want that font too. It has a nice homemade feel to go along with the home territory. To me that is thinking deeper than showing palms or ocean, or pirates. This one is exceptionally balanced and the message is sent. I love the use of the field to bring the logo to a point. I can’t stop looking at that. Does that blue really represent the water in Tampa Bay? It..........................

What’s Up With This, NFL? [13 Aug 2008|11:33am]

talentzoo

Simple and plain, big events need big logos. This expectation is reasonable, consistent and very attainable.
I happened to stumble across next February’s big game logo for the Super Bowl in Tampa. You’re kidding, right? This looks like it belongs on a hang tag for an irregular sized t-shirt in a bargain basement dump bin. Way too retail looking. I get all of the graphic elements here, but I find the layout far too basic and under developed. It has no potency as far as a symbol for an event of global proportions that the Super Bowl has become. No inspiring iconic value. The over-emphasis on the roman numerals only adds to its ineffectualness. The blue is supposed represent the water in Tampa Bay. Guess what guys, there’s water everywhere. What’s different or distinct about it in Tampa Bay? What’s with the zeros in front of the month and date? That isn’t edgy or cool, just annoying. The big game is in Tampa Bay and I don’t see any reflection of that in the logo. It says nothing about them.

No one refers to the big game as Super Bowl 43, it’s the Super Bowl. After all these years, the luster and glow of the game is not predicated on the yearly numerical installment. The NFL will keep track of all that good stuff for us and let us all know when they hit 50, 75 and 100 years. Most people don’t even know what the roman numerals add up to anymore. In 2002, the Super Bowl was held in New Orleans, which has had much more than their fair share of Super Bowls and typically their logos have a jazzy, festive, party look and feel. It may be a visual stereotype but at least it’s accurate and it enhances the big game.

Check out the 2002 Super Bowl logo. Five months after 9-11, America was the theme and this dimensional.......................

Short Deadlines and Unreasonable Requests [30 Jul 2008|02:05pm]

copywriterblog
I'm sure that it was said somewhere that the life of a writer consists of short deadlines and unreasonable requests.  If that is the case, so far so good.  My first paid assignment is for 50 articles based in 5 days, and I have been told that the company does not want to offer more than basic support in writing these articles.

Can this be done? Absolutely.  Can I do it? Most definitely.

Mostly I don't think that people understand what goes into quality writing.  I am happy to say that my client will be getting 50 articles that are better than what he had before (or why would he hire me?), however I am unhappy to say that the efforts shown are not my best.  I just don't have time for a well thought out article that hits the reader in their dominant emotions and then capitalizes on them.

At 10 articles a day I have time to formulate what the driving emotion is, and then write a 1st draft - then move on to the next one.

So, here is where the questions come in.  I realize that I'm new to all of this, but is 10 quality top notch articles a day a little much?  Am I being a slacker? I can tell you that my Girlfriend doesn't think so, and while she is being extremely supportive she is not all that impressed with the personal time that my computer it taking away from her.

Thanks for tuning in,

Kevin Tjia

Help - don't know what to charge [28 Jul 2008|01:12am]

arpy
Hello all -

I am considering a writing project and the client has not set a price. He asked me what I was charging but I've never done this type of projects before, and can't find the average rate anywhere.

Well, the project itself is not exactly writing, it's rather re-writing. The client has educational DVDs that were transcribed into a 100-page document/each. He wants to make workbooks out of these DVDs. Each workbook would be about 75 pages. I will need to rewrite his DVD lessons and make them educational workbooks with quotes, tips, referrals to videos etc.
Since it is not really writing from the scratch, and at the same time the project is relatively large, I've no idea what to ask for. Please note that I would prefer to charge either per project or per page then per hour. I have experience writing, but I've never done workbooks (and the client knows it), so I want to ask for a little less than a pro would as I really want to get this project!

Any suggestions? Advice? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

P.S. Both me and the client are located in the US, so average rates for other countries would not apply.

The Rules of Copywriting [17 Jul 2008|11:54am]

copywriterblog

Although I am a writer, I am new to the copywriting scene.  I have done months of research about what you need to put in your copy, and attempted to assimilate every piece of data that I can find on the topic.  I think I have a pretty good handle on it, but none of the information that I have been able to research is a 'complete view' of copywriting.

I have been told that there are rules to copywriting (and indeed I have come across many), but that there are no rules.  Write what no one else is writing; what worked yesterday is overdone today, etc.  In the ever changing world of copy I can understand that but there must be a process or success wouldn't be duplicated, it would be engineered every step of the way.

I would like to know what your thoughts on writing copy are.  What process do you use?  If you don't want to 'give away your secrets' then perhaps 1 'rule' that you use when you write you copy.

To offer one of my own (enlightenment passed on to me by the greats that I have been studying) - "Find the passion in your product or scene, and make that your message."

Copywriting Software... [03 Jul 2008|07:46pm]

darkangel_5238
[ mood | hopeful ]

I am currently pursuing my Bachelor of Arts for Professional Writing.  I am interested in Copywriting and Document Design, but I'm beginning to realize that my college doesn't offer any courses or workshops to cover a lot of the software that I'll need to be proficient in for this field.  I'll be taking several courses next semester that cover editing, document design, management writing, creative writing, and digital writing.  I've also taken a techinical writing course.  In addition to the courses, I've been searching for an internship opportunity to gain experience.

I was wondering if anyone had any good links, resources, or information that would be useful for someone in my position.  I also wanted to know if anyone could recommend the software that I'd likely need to become more familiar with.  I'd really appreciate any suggestions anyone can make!  Thanks in advance!

[30 Jun 2008|07:01pm]

razor_thin
I am in need of a lot of information as I am starting to feel really overwhelmed. I was an English major with a secondary education concentration, but switched to the creative writing concentration. I only did the education one because I hated when people read my writing, but then decided I didn't enjoy annoying kids all day either.

So basically, at my university (Michigan State), we have cognates instead of minors. My cognates are advertising and communications, and with my English major, I would like to get a job in copywriting. I have a year left of school, and no portfolio.

I guess what I am asking is what does a copywriting portfolio consist of right out of college? Should I go to a portfolio school after I graduate? As an English major, we don't work on ads. I am in my first advertising class right now, and we're working on creative projects, but they're not in teams. I thought we would be creating a book, but since it's only four students in the class this second session, I guess the projects are pretty individual.

Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Ghostwriting [16 Apr 2008|01:36pm]

I've done a lot of ghostwriting in the last several months. Post-merger letters from mega-corp CEOs, that sort of thing. What is "standard procedure" for ghostwriting? How do you handle that section of your portfolio?

Obviously, I will post *nothing* without permission (even though said permission is spelled out in the fine print of client contracts).
