Fred Thompson was my first choice.

That being said, I'm really getting sick and tired of people saying McCain isn't a conservative. Fred Thompson had an 86% rating with the American Conservative Union and everyone said he was the true conservative in the race. For God's sake people, McCain has an 83% rating. That makes him one of the most conservative members in the Senate.

It is becoming much clearer to me everyday why radio guys like Rush and Hannity don't like McCain. They know he can win when they truly want Hillary to win. Hillary in the White House would provide four years of fodder for Rush and Sean regardless of how badly she messes up the country.

Can we as conservatives really trust Romney? Can we voter for a pro-choice candidate like Guiliani? Huckabee would be ok as a running mate but I think his campaign is about to run out of steam.

McCain is a man of conviction and courage. It would have been easy for him to have voted differently on some of the things we disagree about but he voted his conscience. We had eight years of someone in the White House in the 90's who ran the government according to the polls. We are finishing 8 years with a President who told us he was a compassionate conservative but who wouldn't veto a single spending bill until the Democrats took Congress. I for one, honestly believe McCain is much more of a conservative than George Bush ever tried to be.

McCain's convictions
[info]russj
2008-01-30 03:45 am UTC (link)
He has convictions alright--Democratic ones like:

"campaign reform" that ignores the bill of rights
"immigration reform" that give amnesty to illegals

Why do you think that the mainstream-liberal-leftist media likes McCain?
Why is Hillary Clinton so "comfortable" with McCain?

Because he thinks like they do!

This is where those ratings are flawed - McCain's sketchy judicial nominee record (including his disputed statements this week), his economic stupidity, and that goddamn campaign finance bill alone put some VERY heavy doubt in my mind about his ability to govern period, let alone from a conservative standpoint.

Do I admire him as a human being? Absolutely. Is he "Presidential?" Yup. Is he nothing but trouble in ways that Bush could only dream of being? Pretty much.

I despise McCain. I don't know if "liberal" or "moderate" Republican are the best words for him. As far as I'm concerned he represents everything that I hate about the Republican party and he rejects everything that I like about the Republican party. I'm a long time staunch conservative and I'd much rather see a Democrat win the presidency than John McCain.

Heard this on the radio tonight...

McCain: "He [Michael Graham] also mentioned my abridgment of First Amendment rights, i.e. talking about campaign finance reform [McCain-Feingold]....I know that money corrupts....I would rather have a clean government than one where quote First Amendment rights are being respected, that has become corrupt. If I had my choice, I’d rather have the clean government."

His ineffectual legislation is more important than the 1st Amendment. His "good intentions" are more important than free political speech, despite the actual results.

I might just vote Obama if he gets the nomination. Fuck the Republicans and then some if they choose that guy. "Maybe we need a Carter to get a Reagan."

However if faced with McCain vs. Obama/Clinton/Whomever.. I'd vote for him simply because voting 3rd party is throwing away your vote and will likely ensure a Democrat for a President.. to nominate new Supreme Court justices.. and make a bigger mess in Iraq/Afghanistan. (seriously..they will)

Putting something in the "other" category is not necessarily throwing away your vote. There comes a time when a message must be sent to our representatives that they've gone too far. We went from Reagan to Bush to W Bush. And now McCain? How bad must it get before it's too much?

Since Thompson dropped out, my vote goes to Paul.

In the general election, I'd consider Romney if he is the nominee or Obama if he is up against one of the other republicans I dislike more.

Where I'm concerned, a tax increase spells a pay increase and increased research funding as well as teacher pay likely. It's a catch-22 where my family is concerned as we live off taxpayer money. I just try to make the most of it and do the best I can.

Maybe if we had a Republican congress I could be persuaded to vote third party, but handing over two branches of government and leaving the third as a mixed bag just doesn't jive well with me.

If it has to be done, then it has to be done. McCain is serious about fighting radical Islam, he says he will veto pork, he says he will appoint constructionist judges, and he says he has learned from McCain-Kennedy. Skepticism is acceptable when given the alternatives.

Honestly, of the options available, what do you guys WANT?! You hate Huckabee and you hate McCain, and they're both, from their platforms at least, die-hard conservative with typical Republican positions on the war, the economy, guns, abortion, gay marriage, et cetera.

I can't believe you want Romney. The man's trying to present himself as GWB 2.0. He's a phony, a panderer, and all his positions sound like they were written by interest groups and lobbyists of various types.

I don't agree with any of the Republican candidates on much, but I can at least respect McCain for having a few convictions.

McCain's positions on illegal immigration alone disqualify him from my serious consideration. Plus his campaign finance reform has seriously damaged the political process. Huckabee's "Fair Tax" would fall on the poor and middle class the hardest, and he is unacceptable ignorant of foreign policy. I agree with you that McCain has strong convictions. I admire and respect him very much as a human being. But our policy disagreements are too wide. As I've said elsewhere, both McCain and Huckabee would be true successors to George W. Bush, the former on foreign policy, the latter on domestic policy. And that's why I can't support either one.

I agree with you on Mitt Romney; he's as phony as a three dollar bill.

Old enough to go start puberty.

At what point are they no longer 'acting like Democrats', and instead 'acting like a once great political party that's been taken over by mercantilist and theocratic special interests, leaving it a parody of its former self'?

Entirely valid point. Which is why I wouldn't be too upset for the Republicans to suffer a major defeat, it might be the only thing that can cause the party to seriously change.
