Hey guys, since I can never get into the forums (503 ERROR'D every time) I'll post this here!

I'm in a group of 3 people coming from Columbus, Ohio, and we have room for one more in the car in exchange for driving help and gas money. We're traveling on I-71 up to Cleveland, then along I-80 and I-84 through PA and NY to Hartford. We do not have any hotel space left, since we're sharing with a gaggle of people from around Hartford, but if you're all by your lonesome and need a ride, please drop me an email at alexheberling@gmail.com

We'll be traveling Thursday night through the night to arrive at the con Friday morning, so be prepared to drive in darkness!

Well, this doesn't have much to do with the convention, other than cosplaying, but I need advice for something, so if you could help me, that would be lovely.
I'm starting a webcast as Konata from Lucky Star, and I need ideas on what I should do during the show. I also need questions, to answer on the show no matter how silly they seem.

Hey Bostonfolk scifi/anime goons, (or those perhaps passing through), would any of you be willing to give a ride to a lonely first-timer? I don't have a ride and am trying to see if anyone is carpooling there or somesuch. I would gladly supply some gas $ and buy you a tasty snack! I need to be at the convention hotel by the evening of Thursday, July 31 because I am in the Artist's Colony and thus have the hotel starting Thurs night so I am ready to go Fri morning!

You'd also get a free metal cd! Yay! Incentive!

about me: I'm 24 and have been attending cons for eons, just not this one! I have also run panels at various cons on Sailor Moon, Final Fantasy (and will do so at this con!), and hentai ;) I live in Somerville MA, which is only a stone's throw from Boston but would be pleased as punch to meet you at any landmark in Boston if it makes things easier.

Are you interested in Connecticon: The Musical and would like to know more about helping out? Did you want to audition, but missed the opportunity? Well, you're in luck!

Connecticon: The Musical is looking for dedicated technical members to help backstage during the production of the show!

Responsibilities include managing costume changes, props, set changes and much more. Applicants must be able to make at least two rehearsals before the premiere of the show.

We are also looking for a dedicated technical manager who has experience calling a theatrical production.

con badges

Hi folks,

Well, it's the beginning of a new con season. It's also the summer, which means that I'm not taking classes, and my hands are itching to draw. I've decided to start selling commission conbadges for the season. If you don't know what a con badge is, a description is here.
Generally they are used at furry conventions because they are drawings of a person's fursona, but I find no reason why they can't depict a cosplayer in his or her favorite (or most well known) cosplay. So here's the deal.

Con badges will be done on 4"x3" bristol board in colored pencil, ink and marker. They will be laminated and include a badge clip. These badges can we worn behind or beside the official con badges. They will include a drawing of the buyer's character or cosplay of choice along with their nickname or cosplay name.

Badges will be $20 plus s+h (unless you pick it up at the con from me), which also covers the cost of laminating + clip. I've researched other people's costs and this seems fair, as most go for around $35. I have a paypal account set up for art commissions so everything can be done online.

So please, tell your friends, and snag one for yourself. =)

Below is a mockup I did for one for myself. This one is just colored pencil and it's not laminated, but you get the idea. The quality's not great because it's a photo (scanner absolutely raped the image) and I think it looks a lot better in person.

Time Travel is Awesome has already had some convention content from Sakura Con + Part 2 but we plan to bring some coverage from at least three more conventions this summer. What I want to know is, what kind of content do you want from convention coverage? What do you most care about when it comes to conventions that you attended or when you want to grasp the content of a convention that you missed? I plan to bring lots of photos, video (interviews like those above some comedy, some serious), hopefully some interviews, and panel write ups. But I really want to know how I should spend the most time on based on what the community wants to see.

Okay.

Who wants to play Munchkin at my flat in New Haven tomorrow night (Saturday)?
The one thing is, I need someone to bring a deck.
Barnes & Noble only had the old west game (The Good, the Bad, and the Munchkin),
so, I must wait for Amazon to fire over a deck...
But, I want to play this weekend.
The Mrs. is out of town, so, this would be a good opportunity.
I know, this is short notice, but, if someone can bring a deck, and people
want to play, I can provide tunes, refreshments, and a place to play.
I'm thinking late afternoon, like 5 or 6pmish until as late as people want to play
before moving on to other weekend pursuits...

I've only played a couple of times, at dragoncaller's home, but, he lives all the way out in BFE (aka North Stonington),
and that's a long way from here...
And it was several years ago...but, It was SO fun, and I really want to play again.

Artists' Colony tables

Hey guys!

I was planning on getting a table at the Artists' Colony this year, but since I'm going to be a panelist (Lolita Fashion 101 on Friday at noon, panel room two! *plugplug*), I wasn't sure if I should go about registering differently due to badges (seems pretty silly now, but I didn't know how much I should pay, etc. if I only needed the special artist's badge for the Colony purposes instead of a con badge, or if it even worked like that, etc - total newb to artist-alley setups!), but I emailed someone who I figured would know and he didn't get back to me until it was too late, and all the tables were gone!

So, my question is, is there anyone who registered for a table and no longer needs it/is able to attend/anything? Or even who wants to share? I don't need electric hook-ups or anything as I'm just going to be selling jewelry and accessories, so I wouldn't really take much room - space for a dressform would really be the only major demand I'd make.

I normally would just suck it up, but my partner and I have already put so much money into making prototypes that I'm getting a bit desperate >.< Otherwise I'll just resort to selling online.

Weekend-Long LARP: Nexus at Connecticon 2008

Welcome to Connecticon 2008! Connecticut's premier anime, gaming, web-comics, science-fiction and fantasy convention is starting with a real bang. What could be more exciting than a weekend devoted to alien contact? Fans from all over are coming; the costuming looks to be absolutely fantastic. All those UFO sightings in the past few weeks are just coincidence. Or are they?

Something Strange Is Going On . . .

Why are so many prominent scientists, military officials, and business men showing up? Isn't this taking multi-media to a bit of an extreme? And the costumes! Those tentacles look incredibly realistic. Why would anyone go to such lengths to produce such awful smelling slime? Could it be a prop from one of the TV shows? But doesn't Babylon 5 use computer rendering? Just what has happened to the weapons policy? Some of those toy guns look oddly functional... How do those guys get that little black box to float six inches off the ground? What about the legendary ghost of the Connecticut Convention Center? Just another clever effect? Why would anyone come to a science fiction convention dressed as a gangster? And that guy with the floppy hat and long scarf? Nah, couldn't be...

What is Live Roleplaying?

Welcome to Nexus. You and 74 others will become scientists, military officers, diplomats, and other visitors to Connecticon 2008. Together, we'll create an exciting alternate history. Your character is described in a short story about your background and goals, not as a set of statistics. The simple, safe, card-based rules let you back your clever speech up with a little muscle (even if you're a klutz in real life), but encourage creative role-playing and dramatic interaction between characters. The only audience is you, and there's no script: your actions will shape the future. Live role-playing is a great way to meet new friends, solve mysteries, and save the world (or take it over!).

How much is Nexus?

Nexus is free for all attendees of Connecticon 2008.

Will I be able to do other things at Connecticon or will I need to devote my weekend to Nexus?

Nexus is open to players who would like to spend a lot or a little time playing it throughout the weekend - we have characters available that will be fun no matter how much time you want to devote to it.

How can I sign up?

Just go to http://nexus.foambrain.com and you can fill out the signup questionnaire, where we can get an idea of the character type you would like to play.

The 2008 Mall Takeover

Calling all cosplayers!

(For those who have been following the forums, this might be old news)

The 2008 Buckland Hills Mall Takeover!
When: Thursday, July 31st, 1:00pm
Where: 194 Buckland Hills Drive, Suite 2500, Manchester, Connecticut 0604 (Click for directions)
What: We invade! We entertain! We have fun! Basically, it's a meet at a local mall, so bring a costume and a camera.
Driving: For those who might need transportation, I'll be stopping by the convention center around noon. I can shuttle up to six people to the mall and back. Just look for the female pirate driving the minivan.

Hope to see everyone out there!

BTW: I'll be contacting the Buckland Hills mall administrators/personnel within the next couple of weeks to secure permission for this event. They've been open to similar mall 'invasions' before, so I doubt there will be any issues

Sorry if you've already seen this - I posted on egl and ctonthefrills about it, but it was suggested I post here, as well. I was just wondering, who here would be interested in lolita events? (For anyone who doesn't know, "Lolita" is a Japan-based street fashion - here's the wiki on it, which isn't too bad)

I didn't see any schedule posted on the CTcon website yet, so I was going to use the "contact us" feature on there to e-mail them about it, but first I wanted to gage interest on here - who would be interested in attending a how-to panel for beginners (and/or for intermediates) on lolita?

Guitar Hero II, Tournament

Guitar Hero II Tournament At FurFright, sponsored by RedOctane.

It's time to pound the rhythm and melt some faces!
FruFright is proud to announce it's first ever Guitar hero Tournament!

Where: FurFright at the Connecticut Grand Hotel
Waterbury, CT

When: Sat. Oct 20th.
Sign-ups: noon – 2:00 pm
Tourney: 2:30 pm – 6:30 pm

Note: The convention is all weekend (Fri Oct 19th – Sun Oct 21st) and the gaming room will be open as long as possible (volunteers wanted!)

Entrance Fee:
There is no entrance fee for the tournament itself, but all players must be registered attendees of FurFright. (See website for details: http://www.furfright.org)

Qualifiers:
Format: 1 song of the judges choosing. Top 8 scores will seed.
Consol: Sony PlayStation 2
Game: Guitar Hero II
Details: After all participants have played, the top 8 scores will be eligible to participate on the final tournament. If one of the to finalists is unable to attend the Tournament, The next highest scorer will take his place (ex. Player A gets the 4th highest score and Player B gets the 9th highest score, if player A is unable to attend, Player B will bumped into the final tournament in 8th place, bumping players originally in 7th-5th place accordingly.

Tournament:
Format: Single elimination, "score attack" tournament
Consol: Sony PlayStation 2
Game: Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80's
Details: Each match up will consist of 3 songs on Pro Face-Off mode. The first song will be chosen be Player A, the second song by Player B and the 3rd will be chosen at random. Please note that both players must play on the same difficulty setting. The scores from all three rounds will be added and the player with the most points will advance to the next round.

Prizes: Prizes will be awarded to the 1st and 2nd place winners. Prize support supplied by the awesome folks of Red Octane. Additional, prizes to be determined.
