 | 10:03 pm - I'M BACK Camp is over at last! It's good to have the Internet working reliably again. And since it is, I went and threw together something new. I now have a real blog: http://dishwasherphilosophy.wordpress.com/
I thought it would be fun. Anyway I'm heading up to TH tomorrow (I think), and I'll be there for the week. Most of the stuff is already out of my apartment. So I'm just going to hang out for a while and then take the rest with me when I leave, and I'll be finally moved out.
The landlord says the apartment is already rented out. We don't have a place to take the couch, so he's supposed to ask the person moving in if they want to buy it. If not, I might have a couch for sale. And then there's my desk. I think I'm just going to give that away. So if you need one, let me know.

 | 09:54 pm - Thought of the Day It's really frustrating when you're trying to prove a point to someone who always tries to "keep score" about fights, who does more work, etc. because in order to prove said point it usually seems to involve some sort of counterexample, which means you're doing your own scorekeeping even if that's not how you like to prove a point. | 08:31 pm Scanned and uploaded a few of the B&W shots. (seriously, eight out of two rolls of film. *sigh* I've got three more B&W rolls at the moment, though one expired back in 2006, so I may not use it. Next batch will hopefully be better.)

 | 06:08 pm - How to order at Subway Hee, that was fun. I went to Subway just now to get a sandwich. I walked in, the clerk walked right out and asked for my order, and straightaway I told him "6-inch turkey & ham on wheat." He said, "Boy, you sure know what you want, eh?" Having been to a lot of Subways on this trip, indeed I did. And I said, "Yup. I'll bet you wish most of your customers did, too." He and the other clerk laughed and said yes, and started imitating a typical customer trying to decide what to order: "Uhhh... uhhhh..." He said it sounds like they're having an orgasm! OK, whatever. He was so amused he gave me an extra slice of cheese. Cool! (Well, frankly I would've preferred an extra slice of ham, but oh well.)

 | 05:53 pm - Day 4: Laramie to Raton Uneventful. Hot and sunny. Now here I am in Raton, NM, only one state away from home. Unfortunately, that state is Texas, and it will take another two days to cross it, mostly on non-interstate roads.
This is the same hotel that had the church group fulla idiots playing a loud late-nite game of Marco Polo when I last stayed here on the way up. When I got here, there were a bunch of kids and teens playing in the pool and doing a lot of loud hooting and hollering.
They've gone back to their rooms now and it's quiet. Let's hope it stays that way.

 | 05:49 pm - #182 - Entertaining bardic inclinations. Re-worked the lyrics to "Fallen Goddess", which has been sitting around for years. Likely as not, these won't be the final - it would depend on what comes out for doing the melody. I'm not entirely happy with the lyrics as-is either, but I figured I should get something passable down so I can practice my music composition.
This will be a difficult song to deal with, though. It's manifesting in my head as a symphonic/gothic rock piece, and I'm nowhere near talented enough at this point to make that happen. And I even have an idea for how it'll be arranged on an album: it'll be preceded by a recording of my poem "Your Move", which will fade into the opening riff of "Fallen Goddess", and succeeded by a quote from "The Charge of the Goddess", all with audio effects and musical stuff and that sort of jazz that I have no skill with doing at the moment. (It's also not very practical given that I still live at home and I don't exactly have a garage or basement to myself where I can make all the noise I want without bothering anyone...)
Your Move
Save sinners and redeem them for rewards at City Hall! Baptize them in their own blood - all of them, all! Send a Pentecost of bullets upon their heathen heads! Three points for every hand you nail, ten points for a knife between the eyes And multiply by two the number of lies you’ve told!
Gehenna-gone fools, I pity you Who presume to know what your Lord would do.
Fallen Goddess
Once upon a time, you were mine and I was yours Warm embraces and twilight lullabies I delighted in the grace from your eyes
But good things were never built to last Even temples of stone bow before time's mighty throne Our paradise has died to the past Can we make another one alone?
My fallen goddess Marked by time, marred by folly, blinded by light Though I've strayed to find my own way I will never abandon you
Once upon a time, I believed in you and you in me You were the truth and all that was right Until I thought to spread my wings to take flight
So this paradise has died to the past Was it ever anything more than a dream? Good things were never built to last For longer than a wish, it seems
My fallen goddess Marked by time, marred by folly, blinded by light Though I've strayed to find my own way I will never abandon you
The gifts I gave, you ceased to take The hymns I sang, you ceased to listen The prayers I said, you ceased to answer...
My fallen goddess Marked by time, marred by folly, blinded by light We've lost each other now, but I give my solemn vow: I'll remember you always
Excerpt from The Charge of the Goddess
Whenever ye have need of any thing, once in the month, and better it be when the moon is full, then shall ye assemble in some secret place, and adore the spirit of me, who am Queen of all witches. I'm also doing a piano arrangement of Dar Williams' "Mercy of the Fallen". It's a very lovely song, though I'm puzzling over the lyrics.

 | 03:02 pm - Running BZR on Fedora Core 9 There is a brokenness in the Bazaar bzr command line tool and in Launchpad.net, that was revealed on Fedore Core 9.
Launchpad.net uses a CA authority that a SSL library in one particular Python module doesnt know about. This is several bugs at once. Launchpad trying to be "special" with CAs, bzr having two completely different Python HTTP client libraries, and being inconsistant about checking SSL host keys.
But, until they quit fingerpointing and get it fixed, here is a good workaround, until they get it fixed. Run the following command:
curl -NO http://curl.haxx.se/ca/cacert.pem >~/cacert.pem
Now the Python SSL HTTP library in bzr will use that set of CAs instead of the system one, and it will quietly and correctly Just Work

 | 04:07 pm - Gawd it's hot

It's 96 degrees outside. The aircos are on full blast, and I'm afraid to leave the house. Tonight I'll venture out for some errands. I've been on vacation all week - a lazy 8 days of naps, visits to the New York Public Library, and catching up with some reading. Also I've been updating the English-Alphistian dictionary. It's going to be a little longer before the revised version is up though, maybe another week. I'll alert the Alphistian diaspora ;-) when it's ready.

 | 09:01 pm - Oh dear So two out of the three reviews I got for Things We Can't Untie on ff.net accused me of writing St Charlie and Bad Don.
I was more shooting for Confused and Unhappy Don and There Is a Reason I'm Outta This Job Megan. Charlie wasn't even in the fic, although of course the issue was going to come up.
I do hate it when I fail so miserably at getting across what I mean in fic. And of course the negative reviews are all anonymous so I can't reply to them.
I do think that Charlie is closer to right than Don in this case. Don's rulebending is in the direction of interfering with suspects' civil rights, while Charlie's is in support of freedom of speech. Looks like ff.net is full of neo-cons, then. Current Mood: cranky Current Music: Blue Öyster Cult - (Don't Fear) The Reaper [Long Version]

 | 02:19 pm - "Learn to Speak Democrat" Ahoy! I was bored, and I figured that I'd do a search to see what the state of discussion is like in the United States Senate. So welcome to a fine presentation by Representative Thaddeus McCotter (R - MI).
I ended up clicking on the 'stop' button after listening to this for about a minute.
There are a number of equally stupid ones from the Democrat party floating around on YouTube as well, but I still haven't found anything quite this bad. I'm taken back by just how bad this really is.
The political process is so stupid. Current Music: Faust Arp - Gabriel Barcia-Colombo
