Are you a person who considers themselves part of the LGBT community? Are you struggling with issues that others around you can't relate to because they are not? Are you discouraged that most of the peer advice networks for people of alternate sexualities and genders are offline and not so anonymous?
Or are you someone of an alternate sexuality who wants to help their peers go through the same things you did? Are you someone who wants to keep up with LGBT news and socialise with other people going through the same things you are? Are you a heterosexual person who is adamant about LGBT rights?
If you answered yes to any of the above, then this community is for you! We are a peer advice community for LGBT youth in crisis. Our dedicated volunteers will help you deal with issues such as coming out, discrimination and homophobia, relationship problems, the fight for equality, reactions of other people, alternate sexualities and religion, and et cetera. We also function as a social group where you can meet other people in their teens and twentysomethings within the LGBT community and stay up to date with news on important issues that concern us all.
In
congregaytion, there will be several things we will focus on.
Advice: Members who are seeking advice about any aspect of sexuality or gender identity (coming out, discrimination, questions about religion and sexuality, etc) can post ADVICE posts. At all times, there will be several staff members in addition to the maintainers, who will work on the Advice Staff. It is these staff members that will answer the advice posts, however, the entire community can read them.
Socialising: As members, you will be able to post virtually anything that has to do with sexuality, equality, gender issues, relationships, etc. You can also reply to other people's posts. As a member, you can also posts entries requesting to meet new people to add to your personal journal, discuss events, etc.
News Post:Your maintainers and staff will several times a month post official news posts about whatever on-topic subject they feel (i.e. how to best approach your parents, current developments in the LGBT movement, etc). Any member is free to post about any news they wish, which will be separate from Official News.
Contests: We will also occasionally hold contests that will have actual *real* prizes provided by the maintainers, such as Referral Contests, Donation Contests, etc.
Personal Challenges: Once a month, the maintainers will come up with a Personal Challenge. This challenge will be something you can attempt to do for the LGBT cause in your own time in your personal life. Examples would be, "This month, try to reach out to a struggling LGBT student at your school," etc.
If at any time you have a suggestion for the community, do not hesitate to message
lirimaerea and
ascarerea or any of the staff with your suggestions!
1. Membership in this community is moderated. In order to join, you need to get approval of the staff first. This is to prevent trolls and wankers from coming in due to the sensitive nature of this community. We will approve your membership if and only if you have an established journal (as in, you didn't just make it a week ago--HOWEVER, if you have an explanation for your wish to join the community, feel free to message the maintainers/comment on the Members Only post explaining your wish to join) and we have no reason to doubt you are actually interested in the message of the community.
2. Be nice to everyone. If you disagree with something someone says, you're free to debate it, but don't insult other people or start drama. Doing this will result in a ban. This is a community where people can be accepted, not harassed.
3. Tag all of your posts. If it is an advice post, be sure to tag it with "advice: discrimination", "advice: religion", "advice: coming out" and et cetera. If it is a social post, tag it with "social". If it is a news post, tag it with "news".
4. I cannot stress this enough: if you are not an adviser, do not reply to advice posts. This is a community where people can get advice from volunteers. We screen our volunteers to make sure they are well versed in LGBT issues and will actually know what they are talking about. If you are not an adviser and reply to the advice posts, you will be warned.
5. Every so often, we will be looking for new advisers. We'll make posts notifying you all of that, so if you are interested in applying, be sure to keep a look out for them. Of course, people who are active in the community will more likely get the position than people who are not.
6. Do not advertise or promote here, unless you get direct permission from either of the maintainers. In general, there are other communities for that. However, if you have an LGBT community that you feel would be of interest to the members, contact
lirimaerea or
ascarerea to ask if you may post your advert.
7. This is not a dating community. Yes, it is a social community where you can meet other LGBT youth, but we are not here to hook you up with somebody. There are other sites for that as well.
8. We do not accept members who are involved in alternate sexual activities that are considered by and large illegal. This includes paedophilia, necrophilia, bestiality, etc. If you want to practice these, fine, however, we will not allow you in the community. We are trying to create a vehicle for change for people of alternate sexualities and genders, and having NAMBLA representatives in our community will bring down the seriousness of our message. Things that ARE allowed include BDSM, furries, supporting sex workers' rights, etc. This will be determined on a case-by-case basis.
Coming soon!
