October Country in 2010 [Mar. 12th, 2009|10:15 pm]

[mood | good]

Hello!
I'm Casey Sledge, and I'm the singer/songwriter half of October Country. We will, Lord willing, be the
Interfilk GOA next year at Conflikt 3. I just wanted to introduce myself, say hello, say a little bit about the band.
I've been singing most of my life; writing songs for a good deal of it.  I started out with contemporary 70's Jesus Music, added folk and Celtic along the way, and then in 1984 was introduced to filk.
The first filk room I ever sang in, I sang a song I wrote that had 30 hands in the air yelling "COPY!" (I had to ask what that meant.)  One of the hands was Leslie Fish.
Shaddow, my guitar playing partner, and I have been performing together for about 10 years.
October Country does a bit of all of it:  we're a Celtic influenced folk duo with an undercurrent/heavy seasoning/ of filk both comic and serious. We hope to share that with ya.  We've got quite a bit of Canadian influence as well: Gordon Lightfoot is a favorite of mine, as is Stan Rogers.
Along with all that, we'll be playing songs originating in the filk  and Celtic communities of Dallas TX.  And I might say, right here, that with very few exceptions, don't expect a country-western band.  That ain't me, babe.

That said, we're looking forward to seeing all'a y'all.   Drop us a line.

open filk main room song lists... [Feb. 7th, 2009|03:27 pm]
hms42
I saw someone at the convention taking notes of whom performed what song. I just don't recall whom it was.

I would like to get a copy (eventually is fine) so I can ID the voices I don't know.

Also, this will make it a lot easier for me to find songs, if someone wants a recording of what they sang. (Permission is required from the performer, if its not you singing.)

Open filk recordings I can find a recording, if given aprox time, room (main or alternative), day. Anything that was performed on stage is not available from me. (John has better quality recordings and can provide those to the performers only, unless permission is granted to share with the world via the conflikt recordings page.)

At this time, I have not gone thru most of the recordings.

O HAI. [info]filkerdave and friends just gave me an idea for Conflikt 3. Ooooh, I've even got a title:

To Serve Filkers.

It is, of course, a cookbook. :)

(*Brownie* points for catching the reference... :)

(Apparently this was done before at LACon 4... /me wonders if the Chair still has his?)

From the reg table [Feb. 3rd, 2009|04:35 pm]

jeffreycornish
As the sleep deprivation begins to wear off, all I can say is wow.

Two and a half years ago when [info]runnerwolf asked me to run reg, I was skeptical if we would break forty members. I'm happy to get proven very wrong like this.

Here's what I saw. I came to the con with 120 badges printed. When we left we had fewer than a dozen badges not picked up. We had about 60 wild wonderful people buy memberships at the con for the the weekend or just the day, so we blew past our membership level last year by a bunch.

Everyone needs to thank Norwescon IT for their kind loan of their badge printer. The printer performed flawlessly. (actually it was also just received back from repair a few months ago, so we gave it a good burn-in test)

The location of registration was great! We had a nice alcove with plenty of room, we were within earshot of the main filk room, one left turn from the dealer's den, and had a spot for friends to congregate.

I was ably supported by my lovely wife [info]geojlc and on occasion had the pleasure of listening to [info]bluesmancd noodle way on his guitar.

I want to thank [info]dornbeast for his impression of fannish duct-tape--always where you needed him, and full of enthusiasm, IQ points, and puns.

What can you say about our guests?

[info]cahdla -- spooky, cheerfully apocalyptic, will make you laugh up your spleen if you are not careful, somehow doing the amount of art that would kill five lesser persons. Definitely needs to go to Australia, this is destiny talking here. Buy her books when they come out. http://www.seananmcguire.com

Lawrence Dean -- a wonderful British gentleman. [info]geojlc is tickled about his Discworld songs.

Frank Hayes---what can you say? A gracious man to whom the art of cognitive simplification is oft attributed (you really didn't need those words there you know, even if they were to your own song), but who writes a mean computer technology column (http://blogs.computerworld.com/hayes), and has ample wit.

The concom. I didn't get to see some of you guys much, but thank you!

Things that are still making me giggle. Ravens in the microwave. Agorophobic ravens. Take my heart, take my hand, take the part that can stand.

Cool things. Talking with Kanef about human factors research at NASA.

Next year:

Better badge design. I got a nice critique and now I know how to make the badge much more useful (name, center on badge, larger font).

Have other people handle the brunch CD duplication and labeling.

Have stuff to decorate badges with. Ribbons, things like that. Maybe a contest focused about that

Have a song/lyrics and the ability to actually play it on the dulcimer decently. And play the guitar.

Thank you to the concom and all of the guests for a great con! It was a lot of fun attending the convention. Lots of good music and a few songs I want to listen to again (when I find them in my recordings....)

I know I will be back for another conflikt convention, I just don't know when. (Hopefully next year.)

Lucy on Display in Seattle until 8 March [Jan. 27th, 2009|02:32 pm]
hms42
Swiping this from Cat Sitting Still's LJ,

http://catsittingstill.livejournal.com/100479.html

Lucy, the 3.2 million year old fossil of a remote human ancestor, is on display in The Pacific Science Center. Note - This is in Seattle. (12 miles from the Conflikt hotel.)

Attendence is really lower than they expected it to be. This might be your ONLY chance to see this exhibit outside of Ethiopia. (I know its my only chance.)

http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2008665445_lucy24m.html

Admission to the Lucy exhibit is $20.75 for adults and teens, less for youth and senior citizens. On Thursdays from 5-9 p.m., admission to the Lucy exhibit is $12 for all ages. (Direct quote from the article)

I am planning on going on Monday (my only day of tourism in the area) and changing my plans from seeing other stuff. (I was planning on trying to get to the Space Needle, which I have been informed is in the same area, but this sounds a lot more interesting to me. I'll see the Space Needle on my next Seattle trip.

This post about putting emergency information on the back of our badges is a fabulous idea.

For example, I would write:

"I am lethally allergic to peanuts and nuts. If I tell you that I am starting to go into shock, my Epipen is here. My emergency contact is [Person A] at ###-###-####."

Could the supplies for this be made available at Registration?

Streaming audio from GAFilk, aXXIdental or FKO? [Dec. 31st, 2008|11:54 am]

A quick question for anyone from GAFilk, aXXIdental or FilkOntario.

Since I won't be at any of these to take part myself (which saddens me greatly), is anyone planning on doing an audio stream? And even though I wasn't planning on them anyway, any plans for a stream from Conflikt or Consonance?

It's a'comin! [Dec. 20th, 2008|11:01 am]

I was initially dubious that I'd be able to attend this year, due to the economy, but yesterday I was able to register for the con.  Yay!  :)  I'm looking forward to attending again!  Thank you for making it possible to register online, by the way - it really makes it convenient.

(I tried to get to the music server today, by the way, and am getting an error.  I get to the initial page, but when I try to look at songs it fails and gives a nasty computerese error.)

How many songs are going to be included in this year's songbook?

Hear Ye! Hear Ye! Calling for Conflikt II Songbook Submissions! [Dec. 11th, 2008|10:47 pm]

shaddyr
x-posted to [info]filk and [info]filknews, so apologies for duplicates!

Conflikt! It's only weeks away!

As usual, deadlines on the calendar are closer than they appear. We're looking for submissions for the 2nd Annual Conflikt Songbook.

If possible, please send submissions in as .doc, .docx, .rtf or .txt as this makes formatting much easier for us. If you only have a PDF, don't feel left out - we still want your songs!

The cut off for songbook submissions will be January 7th, 2009. If you have a song you would like to submit, we'd love to have you send it in! Please send it to us here:

songbook (at) conflikt (dot) org

Note: though the primary purpose of the songbook is to have a keepsake collection of songs by people who attend (or wanted to attend) Conflikt, it was used in 2008 as a songbook for a sing-a-long. This was *very* successful and we are looking forward to doing this again.

Conflikt Hotel Room Rate [Dec. 11th, 2008|02:40 pm]

carmiel
[Tags|]

Well guys, we had a post here that the hotel was offering a lower rate for the weekend of our convention.  I e-mailed the hotel and the response I received was that their website had the rate higher and that lower rate was not available for our weekend.

I don't know where the lower rate came from. So, officially the hotel says that rate wasn't available. Our chair couldn't find it on the hotel's web page, and our $100 rate is lower than any rate presently shown on the Holiday Inn's web page, including the AAA or Entertianment Card rates.

Registration deadline dead ahead cap'n! [Nov. 25th, 2008|11:08 am]

hsifyppah
Howdy! I want to remind y'all to register for Conflikt - the price jumps up to the at-the-door price after November 30, so this is your last chance to get the discount rate of a measly 45 bucks! We had a BLAST last year, we're doing it again only bigger and better this year and you TOTALLY have to be there. Register online at http://www.conflikt.org.

Have you already registered but don't have your brunch ticket yet? We have a LIMITED number of brunch tickets remaining. It's $30, includes a fantastic brunch buffet and a copy of the exclusive Conflikt 2 cd with tracks from our wonderful guests. I promise not to fling scrambled eggs at you using a fork-catapult, either. (Bacon: I make no promises.)

And do you have your hotel room booked yet? We have had a wonderful, overwhelming response and we're way ahead on hotel bookings compared to last year - so book soon while there are still any rooms available!

Conflikt 2: January 30-February 1, 2009
GOH: Seanan McGuire
Toast: Frank Hayes
Interfilk: Lawrence Dean

Hey that's in 67 days! I gotta make some superhero capes! See you there! Whee!

Conflikt Music Server [Nov. 2nd, 2008|11:19 pm]

skydancer

It has been a long time coming, but I’ve finally gotten the web site written for sharing the recordings I made at Conflikt.

http://conflikt.segherssound.com

I’ve got the Friday Night concerts up, and a couple of the other sessions. Most of them are the Live mixes, which for lots of reasons are not optimal for standalone listening, but they are a lot better than nothing! Most of the songs are only available to the public in sample track form at the moment.

The people who performed on a song are able to hear the full track. As performers give permission for the full songs to be available, I’ll set them so the full tracks are publicly available.

As songs are OK’d for public listening, I’ll also start remixing them from the multitrack recordings as I have time. But first I want to get the Live mixes for everything uploaded. Even those take a while per session since I have to break them into tracks, normalize volumes, and then further cut them for the sample tracks.

If you performed at Conflikt, in a concert or one of the other recorded sessions (the full list of sessions recorded is available on the site) tell me in email what username you create at the site and I’ll link it to the Performer record. Also, if you performed on a song that is listed, and you aren’t listed in the credits for that song, let me know.

I know that I don’t have all of the performers listed yet, and I may not be able to glean all the names from the recordings. If you aren’t listed, a note telling me what you performed could be useful. Also, some of the ones listed don’t yet have any songs uploaded.

There are still a few wrinkles being worked out of the site. If you get a Timeout message, just wait a bit and retry.

-          John
