Mermaid Queen Declares Hunger Strike!
Reverend Billy and Savitri D have been named King Neptune and Queen Mermaid of the 2008 Coney Island Mermaid Parade, this Saturday June 21st. And so it is our freaky-monarchical DUTY to use this power to SAVE Coney Island from the gentrifying apocalypse of RETAIL ENTERTAINMENT HELL!
The Queen Mermaid will refuse to go back in the ocean! She will initiate a hunger strike during the parade, and will live in a window on Surf Ave and West 12th from the Mermaid Ball until the critical scoping meeting on June 24th at 6 pm. She is fasting to draw attention to a destructive scheme to reduce 60 acres of amusements to 9. She is fasting so YOU will come to this meeting, where the fate of Coney Island may be determined:

 Coney Island Surf should remain working people's turf

The city's latest plans to "save" Coney Island - the land of dreams and schemes at the southern tip of Brooklyn - once again threaten to destroy it.
That is why I recently wrote Mayor Bloomberg telling him I plan to resign as a director of the Coney Island Development Corp. (CIDC) effective Tuesday, when the city will present its latest plan supposedly designed to transform the area into a year-round attraction. Plunking 30-story hotels onto land that should offer bumper cars and other amusements is not the way to save the city's "working man's Riviera."
As everyone in Brooklyn knows, I am the permanently unelected Mayor of Coney Island and, therefore, a phony politician. As an operator of the Coney Island USA museum and sideshow, I am no more than a spokesman and advocate for a shrinking amusement industry that has persevered despite decades of municipal neglect and hostility.
Coney Island has been smothered by good intentions emanating from City Hall, perhaps never more dramatically than in the 1960s when the city tore down most of the dilapidated structures along Surf and Mermaid Aves. but never quite got around to the rebuilding part. There have been so many plans for Coney Island's future that the paper they were printed on would reach higher than the horses atop Steeplechase Park - if Steeplechase had not been torn down as part of one of those plans.
But when Mayor Bloomberg turned his eyes to Coney Island's future and assigned the CIDC to develop a master plan, I thought that this time things would get better. I was wrong.

Coney Island sideshowers immortalized on beer labels

Coney Island just got a little freakier - the beer that is.
A local brewing company is launching three lagers featuring Coney Island Circus Sideshow freaks on the label.
"It's a real Brooklyn thing - people love that," gushed Dawn D'Arcy, manager of the Gate bar in Park Slope, which just got a new shipment of the refreshing brew.
"We sold out within 24 hours."
The freaks featured on the beers are the Human Blockhead, the Snake Charmer and the Sword Swallower. The suds are brewed in New York by the Schmaltz Brewing Co., which makes such specialties as Jewish-themed He'brew ale.

If light, citrusy-flavored beer is your thing, then check out the Albino Python bottle, featuring Coney Island's own snake charmer, Stephanie Torres.
"It matches my taste for beer. It's kind of like if Corona and Budweiser had a baby," said a beaming Torres. "I had a bottle of it and I just wanted to walk around outside with it, pointing to myself."
But you won't see Torres' 13-foot python, Orangina, wrapping herself around the bottle anytime soon.
"She probably wouldn't be interested, unless it's a rabbit," Torres said.
The Coney Island Craft Lagers debuted in the city last year, and will be available nationwide, freak labels and all, at the end of the month.
"It just made perfect sense to include the performers," said the brewery's owner, Jeremy Cowan.
"A portion of every bottle and every pint, will go toward updating their building ... and keeping the spirits of Coney Island alive."
Heather Holliday, who munches on sharp blades for a living, is featured on the Steel Hop Lager bottle.
Donny Vomit, the sideshow's human blockhead, is the face of the brand's dark brew.
"When I was a kid, I thought it'd be cool to have an action figure made after me, but I think my own beer is a lot better," he joked.
"I love it, mainly because the Human Blockhead is 8.8% alcohol content. It's also dark and really smooth, just like me," he said, quickly noting, "Nah, I'm kind of pasty and bold, but my act is dark."

Coney Island 'mayor' resigns over redevelopment plan

Dick Zigun, aka the mayor of Coney Island, says he'll resign from the Coney Island Development Corp. to protest a revised city development plan that includes a shopping mall.
The Mayor has submitted his resignation.
Dick Zigun, the so-called mayor of Coney Island plans to resign from the group charged with redeveloping the amusement mecca, the Daily News has learned.
Zigun said he would bow out of the 13-member Coney Island Development Corp. to protest a revised city development plan he charged could include a shopping mall near the center of the 47 acre plan.
"This spring, without the CIDC ever having a discussion or ever taking a vote, the strategic plan that I had been a major cheerleader for was totally changed and compromised in a way that no amusement park lover could possibly be happy with," said Zigun, founder of Coney Island USA, which runs a world-famous sideshow.
In a blistering attack, Zigun said that the revised city plan would also mean a significantly smaller amusement park if passed by the City Council next year.
The shopping mall, which would usher in retailers such as a Toys "R" Us with its looming Ferris wheel or an FAO Schwarz with its giant floor keyboard, is a concession to developer Thor Equities, Zigun and other critics contend.
"The CIDC plan promised a world-class tourist attraction with an entertainment core - lots of rides complemented by year-round nightclubs and enclosed water parks," said Zigun in a letter to Mayor Bloomberg.
"Instead the core will now be rezoned for a shopping mall full of Niketowns, Toys 'R' Us and four 30-story hotels."
City officials unveiled ambitious plans in November for a 15-acre, year-round amusement park, 4,500 new apartments and condos and blocks of glitzy stores along Surf Ave.
