Post con expedition
So, after the con, chatting with people who were lingering before going home, one of the departing guests happened to regale several of us with Seanan's expedition to see Turtle Boy, Worcester landmark and, er, objet d'art. This aroused the curiosity of our listener guests, who had never viewed the ..statuary.. as well as Joel Polowin who took the photographs I've linked to above. So we ventured forth in company to examine the piece. Comments were largely along the lines of, "Oh. My."

It has been proposed by certain individuals with sick senses of humor that if we hold Concertino in Worcester again, Turtle Boy should be our mascot. Opinions?

Shouldn't this be marked as NSFW? ;)

I'm not sure what that stands for, but the statue *is* in a public park. And therefore by decree of the City of Worcester Suitable for All Ages.

Oh. Now I understand why Seanan was in hysterics.

Seanan is reported to have climbed on the plinth and verified that Turtle Boy is anatomically correct.

Well, I suppose if one can *see* those bits of his anatomy, then he's not actually doing what he looks like he's doing.

I think this question may be a tiny bit biased.

Yes! It is! I'm not suggesting such a thing myself, you understand. But I won't stand in the way if there is a ground swell of public opinion for the notion.

Would you care to contribute any local lore on the subject?

I have only been living in Worcester for 3 years, so I don't have anything to add. I think the statue speaks for itself.

a) Which one, the Turtle or the Boy, or are they a two-fer? Um, if they'll be coming to our next con, maybe we'll need a Logistics Wrangler sooner than we thought. :)

b) I can't read the second line on the foundation, but the top line names the benefactress. Assuming Railroad Burnside is local (and still alive; I don't see a date on the thing), we could make her one of our Guests. Although ghod knows what her Guest title would be. A non-canon Disc World tie-in?

I'm afraid Harriet Pamela Foster Burnside, who donated funds for the fountain is reported to have died in 1903 (according to this site). The sculptor who designed it (one Henry Bacon) is apparently dead too. In the absence of other information, I think we have to blame Henry for the design. It is unknown whether Harriet was in on the joke.

0) P. F., not R. R. for her initials? Hmmm. Maybe I'd better get the other eye done. :)

1) Maybe she was being Margaret Rutherford to Henry's Groucho Marx?

Margaret Dumont, not Rutherford, isn't it?

I vote yes, but I wonder who will agree to be hotel liason.

Mascot... No.

Amusing concept, but I don't think we particularly want to adopt either the boy, or the turtle, as emblematic; too much risk of people not getting the joke. I could almost see adopting _a_ turtle, without explanation, but even there someone's likely to read more into it than amusement.

It does beg to be used somehow, though. Song contest topic? (With advance warning that littles may need to be chased out of the room for the duration...)

We could just have an "official" field trip to enlighten those who haven't seen Turtle Boy yet. With appropriate warnings, of course. It would be an opportunity to get people out of the hotel for a little while during the weekend: stretch their legs, get some not-so-fresh air.

Looking at old posts and revisiting this three years later, my personal opinion is:

NO!!!!
