esprix @ 11:53pm: A community for Minotaurs

The response to Stuart's untimely passing has been amazing and heartwarming and overwhelming. It's obvious he touched many lives and we all have a lot of good memories of him to carry with us.

I've started a community where we can share stories and pictures and have a place to gather to remember him. Everyone, please feel free to join and post to

minotaursfriend, and pass the word on to anyone else you think would be appropriate.

It is with the heaviest of hearts that I post this today. My very good friend, and I know good friend of many of you, Stuart Carroll (

minotaurs) passed away this morning, June 14. During the night he suffered a massive heart attack, and despite tremendous efforts to save him, he passed away at 6:00 a.m. He had good friends by his side until the end, and his family is gathering to decide on the next steps.

I met Stuart when I ran Gaylaxicon in 2004 in San Diego, and together we not only started San Diego Queer Sci-Fi, but became good friends. Many of us gathered on a weekly basis to play board games, and he helped out with the new local San Diego convention, Conjecture. He also brought me into slash fandom, and when we attended CON.TXT together last year I was stunned by how both famous and loved he was by that community.

I cannot express how sad I am right now. He was a truly wonderful, intelligent, witty spirit that will be sadly and sorely missed by those who knew him.

Finally, the tie in the poll for how to spend the charity money has been broken, and I am pleased to announce we will be exercising the Covered in Bees option, which is 34 Beehives and 34 Flocks of Ducks.

brevisse took it upon herself to illustrate the fanon we came up with in the panel I ran with

dementordelta, Snape's Big Dick & Harry's Quidditch-Toned Thighs: Cliches and Fanon in HP, so in lieu of a real report, I give you... the Post-its!

If you left your contact info on the pad at Dead Duck, it has already been entered. Other members who want their contact info to be available to other con members should log in and add it to their My Account page, where there is now a field for it.

The contact info needs to be in the form of an email address, a livejournal or insanejournal url (username.xxxjournal.com), or any other website url (beginning with http or www).

OMG, you guys are awesome -- THANK YOU! The funds raised at CON.TXT 2008 for Heifer International totaled $1692.50! We rounded that amount to an even $1700, and have put together a little poll* to let you help us determine how to allocate the monies with Heifer International.

melannen @ 11:17pm: A Fandom of One: The Tiny Fandoms Panel
The summary for this panel was full of questions - questions about how to start with a story that begs for fanfic, and turn it into a living fandom. None of us had the answers, so the panel turned into mostly a brain-storming session of ideas for jump-starting a fandom. I agreed to type up the notes, so here we go!

We started the panel by each sharing our favorite canon that has no fandom even though it really, really should. I didn't think to make a list until we were halfway through, unfortunately, so I invite everybody to pimp their fandom again in the comments! (... and in their journals, and communities, and anywhere else they can think of ...)

I'd also recommend you check out the vorkosigan panel's battle plan which has some more strategy ideas. (Also, getting commitments from people to do specific things, as they did, is never a bad idea.)

I am still really enamored of the idea of setting up some kind of centralized directory, support system or gathering place, other than yuletide, for people (like me) whose main fandom is "tiny fandoms" : Anybody have any further thoughts on what form that should take?

I couldn't stay for the whole con and had to leave a day early - so I couldn't participate in the art auction on Sunday. There was a certain Lovett print I'd love to have put a bid on that continues to haunt me. ;)

Is there still a website out there for Lovett's prints? The bookmark I have is apparently no good anymore.
