    The Master Grab List
I know that I have friends who live in places that are regularly threatened by fire, flood, storms, quakes, etc. And I wonder if any of you have a master list of things to grab if you must flee your home quickly. I mean, we always want to have our papers and pets, but there are also other little things that you'd want to have with you as some sort of anchor or memento of your home if you lost it. What little things do you have or would want to keep? I'm not talking about a bug-out bag- which everyone should have packed and regularly inventoried- I am talking about things in addition to that. Little things, not big ones.

What would you grab if you had 5 minutes? 30 minutes? An hour? Would you make a master grab-list and put it somewhere to keep the time constraint down?

After the papers, computer and the cats, I have a few small things I could toss into a bag with my clothes and stuff- like my Takahashi cats, my little bronze Egyptian cat given to me by a late friend, and a small photo of myself in a crop circle. If I remembered to, I'd grab my "This Mess is a Place" plaque off the wall. If I had a few minutes more, I'd grab my wand and one of my Tarot decks off the altar, and one of my small Egyptian figurines. The things I would take would be uniquely mine- little things that I used to hand-carry from pillar to post- last down and first up sorts of things.

I think everyone should take time to sit down and make a Master Grab List, locate the items it contains, then put that list in a place that can be accessed if needed.

    Review: Annies (upstairs)
Thursday night after class, Chris and I ate dinner at Annies' upstairs. The upstairs has a modified menu which is more costly, but upscale from the standard menu. Chris had the dual pork chops which were some of the tastiest chops I've ever tasted. I had delicately fried chicken tenders with a side of steak fries and two capt/cokes. Total cost was ~$70 after tip.

The decor was fairly posh, the seating was comfortable, the menus are wrapped in satin-like cloth, and the lighting is nicely muted. The upstairs would make an excellent setting for catered events.

    Well done, Annies.

    noisy dogs
One of my neighbors down the block (and I mean around the corner and down the street!) has one of those little high-pitched yappy dogs. Yip! Yip! Yip!

I know this because that sound penetrates clear through the freeway noise and the sound of my freezer and the ceiling fan and my clock. The radio is off because I cannot concentrate when Car Talk is on.

But I can hear that sharp, high pitched sound from 1000 yards away- over traffic, and even over the conversation of my neighbors outside. I dislike dog-noise in general, but the high pitched sounds of untrained puppies and small dogs is one of those particularly grating sounds that keeps pulling my attention off what I am doing. Baby and kid-noise isn't much better, but most of the time, an adult will quiet the child. No one seems to do this for dogs.

Why doesn't my cat bother me? Well, he does. Especially when he starts whining. So, I whine back at him, or chase him around or cuddle him. But his noise is more bearable- it's high-pitched, and sometimes loud (when he gets on a tear, he can really howl, and so can Pixel), but it isn't as sharp as a dog yip.

I've always been sensitive to sound- to 'room tone' to echo, to noise and pitch and volume and intensity. Last night my friends and I decided to go eat at a popular pizza place where the volume was so loud- and magnified by the hard walls and glass windows- that my ears rang afterwards. There was no music- just people and kid-noise. We tried to have a conversation, but it was so noisy I could not parse it, and could not make myself loud enough to be heard. We decided not to return there again.

The irony was that we had just come from a political rally, and they did not have the sound turned up high enough- we had to strain to hear the speakers. So, right now, I am sitting here listening to the sound of my fingers hitting the keyboard, accompanied by the refrigerator fan, the clickity-click of the ceiling fan, and the sound of the battery operated analog clock, with an occasional trill from Rolly, who is at the window. There's a mocking bird outside, too- along with traffic sounds and noise from the inbound traffic of the three airports whose glide paths I am under (yes, three- mostly small planes, but also commercial and military aircraft and the Sky 4 helicopter which has chosen my neighborhood to buzz on occasion).

This isn't real silence, but it is as close as I can get here.

    Yay, Saturday!
It's Saturday, and all I have on my list to do is necessities shopping. And house-cleaning, since I am going to have guests for dinner tomorrow. That means the Clearing of the Table- always a chore. I think I am going to reduce my magazine orders next year- it seems that they are piling up without my reading them- never a good thing.

I really wish I had a second table- a library table- to stack all the papers, mail and magazines on- so I could have a pristine dining room table. It seems that nearly every horizontal surfiace of my home has papers or books of one sort or another on it. I guess I shouldn't complain- they don't have clothes, trash, dirty laundry, plates, food boxes or any stuff like that. Just papers and books. I also seem to be accumulating plastic bags- I need to put the Kroger bags in the back seat instead of the trunk, because I keep forgetting to bring them into the store with me. I do need plastic bags for the cat litter, but not so many.

I've come to the conclusion that I will probably never conquer the accumulation of Little Things that don't have a proper place to live. I had a letter opener, a key chain, and a jar pop on my desk- the first two things went into the Accretion Bag for Little Things that get given away at the New Years party. I'm keeping the little jar pop. In fact, it needs to go on my travel key ring.

But Little Things multiply faster than bugs, it seems. I regularly go through my drawers and pitch the Little Things that have moved in to fill up those spaces- but new Little Things come right in after them. I've been taking to avoiding free samples (although things like little packets of soap and spices and stuff like that are actually practical, and the soap gets packed into my travel kits now), and no longer automatically bite at the 'free' samples at Bath and Body Works- although I do like the little bottles of different bath soaps- so I can try a variety of them.

But the tyranny of little things is that they attract more Little Things, and it's hard to toss them because they're Perfectly Good and might be useful someday. That is how they bury you- human beings have a built-in system of values- and we value useful things- even if they're really cheap trash- but our manufacturing capacity for creating ultimately useless Little Things has exceeded our means to keep them. Perhaps if we stopped keeping them, people would stop making them or at least making them in such huge numbers.

Rolly is in Noisy Meezer Mode. He's making that muttering trilling noise, that occasionally blossoms into full-throated meowing- there's nothing wrong (he might want to play, and I will indulge him in a bit), but I think he likes the sound of his own voice.

I need to get out the door- lots of shopping ahead- haven't decided if I want to go into the city or not. Today is the Race for the Cure, and I did not join the pack. I support breast cancer awareness, but do not support all the pink ribbon stuff- that's a racket.

    Last wed fun...
3 shots - one she developed a bruise and slight redness from one yesterday. 19 lbs, 28 inches. She had a blood sample taken, and that didn't bother her that much, as a matter of fact she was gawking at it - trying to figure out what the nurse was doing with her finger. She ate a little cupcake at the pu's house, and seemed to enjoy it pretty well. She's kinda finicky about getting stuff on her fingers, reluctant to pick up stuff that feels squishy. She still hates jello too. The doc asked about how many words she knew/used and we rattled off about 10 or so - mama, dada, mine, bad, poopy, kitkat, doggie, etc which puts her on the fast track for verbal development. 25th percentile on weight, which considering the obesity problem, is a good place to be. She only cried for maybe a minute for the shots - then she was fine. She got a little warm, but that went away the next day.

Bruce, although you speak Portuguese like a gringo, your Amazon with Bruce Parry programme is bloody brilliant!

I must Must MUST try and visit the Amazon, Pantanal, or somewhere else this Christmas, for the wildlife photography opportunities if nothing else (along with death-by-in-laws!). The problem will be the budget, combined with trying to find a decent tour operator. Also, I need to work it around Lu's birthday, Christmas day, and New Year's.

    In other news...

    Cars are washed.

I'm going to see how the temperature is around 1-2pm, as it looks like tomorrow will be a clone of today, assuming British weather can be trusted. If it's warm, I'll definitely go for the BBQ tomorrow lunchtime. If any LJ-ers fancy coming along, feel free!

The grass still hasn't dried out, so I can't cut it until late afternoon. Will go to Fleet around 4pm, and miss the thronging hordes, so grass cutting either before or after.

Roundabouts? Please Learn How To Use Them!
Not wishing to go on a [info]thelovebug type driving rant (just kidding Dave ;-) but...

Roundabouts! If we need some sort of patronise-the-masses type government adverts/education, roundabouts would seem to be a choice topic. Things like: what the difference is between a normal and mini-roundabout... what lane you should get in... and best of all, frickin' signal!

And on that topic, I had a near collision with a lady of advancing years at the Fleet station roundabout about half an hour ago. Came out of the station exit, signalled appropriately to the right, as I was taking the fourth exit, a ways round the roundabout. Old lady pulls out in front of me from another exit, causing me to step sharply on the brakes, and push hard on the horn. No signals. No observation. Nada! For extra irony, there was a police car at the roundabout. What did they do? Absolutely nothing. Nice to see my tax pounds hard at work.

    In other news...

I'm going to wash both the cars today, and probably cut the grass (Lu is swanning off to the big smoke for another "Orkontro", a meeting of Brazilian gals from Orkut. I've put in my order for a Wii, but I suspect Lu won't buy it). It's already a gorgeous morning, so best to take advantage of the day.

I'm feeling nauseous again. Anti-nausea pill has been taken, but with what I estimate to be zero effect.

I'm still thinking about a BBQ tomorrow. Need to double check the weather, and then if OK buy in stacks of food and charcoal. I'm thinking of going for broke and inviting all our friends, and the neighbours from our "street". I doubt all will come, but it's the thought that counts.

Along with potential BBQ shopping, I still need to get some necessary stuff like deodorant. I'm a Hugo Boss man (chortle), particularly a few of the flavours of their stick deodorants, so will check out a couple of possible places in Fleet.

    "What Would Tyler Durden Do?"
lol he wouldn't make a web site called that
and he wouldn't waste time being a snarky little [...] about celebrities of all things.

Somebody missed the point of the movie:
    both characters were losers:
    unhealthy extremes:
each an over-compensation for the other.

There are lots of people in the world that just don't take it up the ass; and, thus, have no need to try and convince themselves of control by tearing things down.

"self-improvement is masturbation; self-destruction is the answer" - Tyler Durden

    bullshit.

'Self'-anything is, by definition, (metaphoric)"masturbation;" stewardship is the true answer.

"We face extreme danger. Unless there is immediate intervention on every front by all the major powers acting in concert, we risk a disintegration of global finance within days. Nobody will be spared, unless they own gold bars."

This is so sad. Not about the crash, but how we are handling the crash and what will happen later. Things are 10 times more worse now in the long run. The government is going to own everything. Older folks on retirement are going to have a really tough time which may just call for more government programs to take care of them.

Nobody listens to the smart people.

There should be a game that's a cross between Risk and the Sims. One would control entire countries where they would manage trade, alliances, wars, natural desasters, domestic, international, and world wide crises.

There could be different types of gameplay... realistic, fun-play, or real play... maybe even a combination of them.

    Realistic:

Natural resources would be based on the country as they are in real life. Things like average life span, type of government, weather, geography, disease, and technology could be based on the CIA Factbook and other sources.

    Fun play:

Pick your setting or from pre-selected settings. Build cities or work with existing cities where realistic attributes are not in play.

    Real-Play:

I guess this would be for long term play. AI would search for, filter, and dissect various news feeds to replicate real life events. For example, there would be wars and one would have the option of managing the military. There would be an economic crisis and one would have the option of managing certain aspects of the economy. One would not have control over major events, but they would have control over managing the events.
