amazonmp3 question [20 Jul 2008|12:45am]
mcchris_lj
I buy my music off of the amazonmp3 store. I'm very happy with the service but...

Two albums that I bought on the store aren't showing up in the "albums I own" list. I never deleted them from the list, so what gives? Has this happened to anyone else?

Network vs non-network plus media stuff [16 Jul 2008|08:55pm]

roshov
I normally consider a network something where lots of computers connect to each other via a server and interact with each other. When reading info on devices about what I’m going to ask, I’m not sure I can figure this out easily without help.

My ISP comes on cable, it goes through the cable modem, into a router. I have a few computers that are connected to the router but don’t go through any thing like a server. They all just SHARE the internet connect but don’t interact between each other.

I want to put on a NAS or Wired/wireless media player which I seen a video and should be able to hook that up in general. It would be hooked into the router via cat 5/6 or wireless. Can all the computers that are connected to the router interact with the NAS or media player via the router, even though it’s not a true network with a server?

I’m using win95 on my main hardwired computer, but the others all use 95 or vista.

Hi there,

My brother just started a weekend job at a computer repair shop. He may think he's hot stuff, but he's still an epic noob. So, he opened up my PC, deducted the fan for my Graphics card wasn't working and that I also needed more Ram. I play Team Fortress 2 pretty much every night and I've never noticed a problem, but he -insisted- so he carted off my PC to his repair shop and took it apart.

I also had a dodgey version of XP (That was a drama. I bought the PC second hand, and the code on the back wouldn't work,) so he said he'd fix that too.

Anyway, in the process, he accidently formatted my PC. I'm in the process of installing Firefox, MSN, all those little things right now. However, I can't for the life of me get my headphones to work. I plug them in, and the computer doesn't even notice they're there. There's nothing to select in the Sound menu.

Any help?

Yahoo Launch Cast-Driving Me Insane! [15 Jul 2008|01:24pm]

papermuse
[ mood | discontent ]

I am having issues with Launch Cast Radio from Yahoo, and I am hoping someone here has dealt with this or knows how to help me. I've already contacted Yahoo over this and all of their suggestions have FAILED. Hard.

So here is the deal, I have a HP Presario laptop, about 2 months old, and launchcast was working fine until about two days after I upgraded to plus. I have Vista as my operating system, and when I first wrote to them about this problem the instructions given to "fix" it didnt add up with Vista. My husband is a programmer (going on almost 30 years!) and he looked at the email and said it looked like instructions for XP. So we tried to figure it out, though I feel we failed because again-the instructions didnt match my operating system at all, and I wrote back to them saying as much and could it be possible they sent me the wrong instructions-they wont address that issue for some reason. I even disabled my antivirus software and nada, tried disabling my popup blocker and nada, tried changing my proxy settings and nada. Then they said to try and reset launch cast-didnt work. And then to reset my browser. Again, did not work. I am very frustrated at this point.

Now what happens is when it comes up all it says is tuning, and if I try and pull it up on yahoo jukebox it keeps pulling up songs and skipping right through like it cant connect-but everything else works fine. I am going insane here, and all I want is my music back! My station works on my husbands computer, but I cant think of anything that I might have done that would cause it to stop working on mine. Any advice would be greatly appreciated as we are baffled over this. If you even have suggestions for a better internet radio with a similar price option, I'm all for it.

Thanks, and I hope some of that made sense.

Curious system tray icon in Vista [14 Jul 2008|08:35pm]

nuclearninja
Question/Problem:
An odd icon appeared in my system tray Sunday morning. This is a screenshot of my system tray with said icon visible (It's circled):

Photobucket

Clicking on it does nothing (there are no left or right click menus), and holding the mouse over the icon doesn't give a notification to what it is.

Furthermore, customising my notifications reveals this (It's the highlighted one):

Photobucket

I'm sure it's not spyware (this computer barley accesses the internet, and when it has, Spybot hasn't caught anything outside of the usual tracking cookies), and I know it's not Windows Defender (the icon is different).

The last time this icon appeared was when my video driver failed, and Vista recovered it. But, unlike the last time that happened, there is no entry for it listed in my Event Viewer or Reliability Monitor.

Anyone else have this happen?

Operating System and VERSION:
Windows Vista Ultimate x86, Service pack 1

Web Browser and VERSION:
Mozilla Firefox 2.0.0.14

Your level of experience:
Advanced

Duration of problem:
Resolved by restart, but I'm cursious if anyone else has had this problem.

Any steps you've taken to troubleshoot?.
*Updated/Replaced Video drivers
*Set the icon to 'hide' in the 'Customise Notification Icons' dialogue. This didn't remove the icon until I restarted the system.

Unable to access various sites... [14 Jul 2008|03:43pm]

niko2k4
Does anyone happen to know of a virus that causes various websites (such as facebook, myspace, hotmail, and many news articles linked to from the msn.com page, to name a few) to be unaccessible? I am running Windows, and have done the AVG scan several times now, getting rid of everything that pops up in the scan, but it doesn't seem to fix the problem. Thanks for any help that you can give! :)

Hello!
This is my first post here - I hope you can help me :)

I have a three-year-old Compaq Presario laptop running Windows XP. When I turned it on today, logged on etc, it started making this really loud whirring noise that I'd never heard before. I'm not sure how to explain it, but it cuts in and out at random and seems unrelated to the hard drive/CPU. I tried running a virus scan - something which normally gets the... CPU?... working - and the noise isn't related to that. I thought it might be the fans, but I'm not sure. It's not constant - 10 seconds or so, then it'll cut out and happen again a little afterwards.

I can access all my files, my computer isn't running any slower than normal, or crashing - it's just that this noise is really worrying me and I'd love any advice you can give me. I know it's a bit vague but if anyone has any ideas I'd really appreciate it. Thank you!

I'm posting this via my cell phone as my internet access has suddenly vanished today.

There are so many symptoms. I've posted them all at my own lj in the main entry and in some comments:
http://grygon.livejournal.com/351226.html

I hope you don't mind popping over and giving some advice. It's just been a chore doing all this research and typing via a cellphone internet browser tonight. Else I'd do an lj cut here and do a more organized post, ofcourse. :(

Office Trace [13 Jul 2008|11:33pm]

agentgoodnight
This will seem like a dumb question, and it probably is but I'm paranoid.

We were recently told that due to loss of productivity the company may be checking the the computers for websites visited to ensure that we aren't wasting the company's time. Just wondering how they would go about doing this, and if I , who don't use a work computer but instead my own personal laptop, have anything to worry about. As it is my laptop I have privacy issues with this. My concern is more if it is even possible for someone to trace websites through a shared internet cable, as I do use the internet cables provided.

Thanks

[ mood | worried ]

Hello again, computer_help.

I have been having a problem with a display picture on my Windows Live Messenger problem, and I thought maybe someone could help.

Apparently, this picture won't go away, no matter how many times I click "remove" and it also seems to only be a blank space. Here's a screenshot:

I would like for it to disappear, and if someone could help me, I'd very much appreciate it. Thank you.

Networking [13 Jul 2008|05:46pm]

[ mood | confused ]

I've recently bought a wireless router, and have set it up with only one problem - securing the network. While, I am not completely technically challenged, this is my first time dealing with wireless networks, and thus, need a little extra guidance. Can anybody help explain (in simple terms) how I would go about securing the network?

Thanks in advanced

wi-fi tool [13 Jul 2008|02:33pm]

elektriknoizz
My dad has a password protected wireless internet connection for his business. The password isn't very secure, and I've tried to tell him about that, but he won't listen.

Every now and then, on the desktop computer, the icon for "not connected to the internet" (the two computers with the red x over them) will appear in the system tray, sometimes taking up the majority of the taskbar. I think this may mean that someone is trying to get on the wireless, but failing. Is this the case?

Also, I've been looking for an application that will tell you if someone is trying to get on your wireless connection, and if they were successful or not.

We run Windows XP on the desktop and Vista on a laptop.

Thanks!

IE memory touble? [13 Jul 2008|03:02am]

grygon
For about a month now I get this message multiple times while using IE:
"out of memory at line: 1"

Google has been less than helpful, all the web sites that pop up when I input that quote are either foreign, or like me and trying to figure out what that means and what to do. I've cleared IE cache, history, cookies, etc. every week since that message started but it doesn't seem to help.

What is it?

Key Loggers? [12 Jul 2008|12:14am]

nicalycab
Can any recommend, if there is a one, a free "key logger"? I swear my roommate has been using my computer and sending pain in the butt emails to personals on Craig's List. I keep changing my password, but every day I come home and there's messages in my Inbox telling me to stop emailing them and in my Sent box showing I sent messages. Plus my desktop icons will be moved around.

She says it's a hacker. I just want to be able to see if it's her. Any ideas?

Hi,

Question/Problem: I'm trying to figure out how to export data on an Excel worksheet in a graphic format (.jpg, .bmp, or .gif).

I'm doing research on invasive weeds, and because our transects divide the plots into a grid system with a simple presence/absence notation, an Excel worksheet with colored cells was really ideal for mapping our results. However, the finished product is large enough to span several pages, and I'd like to figure out a way to just copy that data and save it as a single image.

I've tried just doing an image capture from Paint Shop Pro, but I can't get the whole image on the screen without zooming out and losing resolution, and image capture doesn't allow me to scroll. Highlighting and copying into Word or Publisher just makes a mess. I didn't see any Export option in the file menu, and Saving As in a graphic format wasn't an option.

Any ideas?

OS: Windows XP, with Microsoft Office 2003.

Experience: Seasoned.

Weird buzzing noise out of right speaker [10 Jul 2008|01:53pm]

mystical_chickn
[ music | Wir sind Helden - Denkmal ]

I just bought a used Compaq Armada M700 laptop and until last night I'd had no problems with it. Last night, though, I wanted to play a DVD and the sound coming from the right speaker had a weird, loud, staticky, buzzy noise coming out of it, which was very annoying, especially since I was listening with headphones. To make a long story short, through process of elimination I found out that it's the speaker itself that's the problem, not my headphones or the DVD/CD player. Restarting the computer fixes it temporarily but it came back as I was listening to a CD a few minutes ago (so I restarted the computer and it went away), but is there a way to fix the problem permanently? Oh, I should mention it's part of the sound itself--I mean the volume of the buzzing goes up and down when I turn the volume up or down, but that means that the only way I can get it to go away without restarting the computer is if I turn the volume all the way down, which of course means I wouldn't be able to hear what I was trying to listen to in the first place.

Oh, and while I'm at it, does anyone know how to make accented characters? On the PC it was easy, you just held the ALT key and typed four numeric characters depending on which character you wanted, but I can't figure out how to do it on the laptop. I think I'm supposed to hold down the Fn key, but all that does when I also hold down ALT and type the numeric code I want is get me a happy face (☻). And when I have num lock on I don't get anything at all.
EDIT: nvm, I found the solution for this one. Turns out I also have to hold Shift.

No laptop interent [10 Jul 2008|01:47pm]

punk_pooper
Hello, I am having problems with my laptop.
Specs: Gateway MX3228 Intel Celeron M 1.50MHz 448MB RAM
XP Media Center Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 2
Connected to a Linksys4 port router. The Ethernet port on the lap top was broken when I got it, some I have a USB Ethernet connector, Belkin USB 10/100 Ethernet Adapter.

Alright so yesterday I was downloading with Azureus on a desktop computer connected to the router. The laptop said there was Windows updates available so like the good like MicroShaft zombie I am I updated, that was some time after 2pm yesterday. Closer to 3pm I restarted as the computer needed to for updates to take effect, once I restarted the computer is fine it says I'm connected to the network its sending and receiving packets but aim and firefox do not connect. I think it might have been the windows updates since thats really the only change there has been. I was wonderign if this happened to anyone else, and if there is a way to roll back windows updates.
Any help would be swell thanks.
Also posting on computersupport and anyone one I'm a member of.

Hard Drive Problem [09 Jul 2008|11:52pm]

justgoto
[EDIT] Fixed it... I got rid of all the "jumper shunts."

I replaced my old hard drive with a new one but now I can only access it if I have my Norton anti-virus disk in, (it asks if I want to boot with the disk or the hard drive;) or if I restart it, it understands to go back the hard drive.

I have all the cd/dvd drives just as before but the hard drive had two more prongs than the old one. I have it so it looks like this.

::[:][:]:

I am using two of those prong connector things as demonstrated in the book.

This is how the old one was.

::[:]:

Are those prongs my problem?

Spilled sticky substance into CPU...HELP! [09 Jul 2008|01:54pm]

killsweetwater
I am a careless idiot. But please help me anyway.

I'm not entirely sure how this happened, but I haven't been using my PC at all since I got a laptop and I don't pay too much attention to it anymore. But recently I noticed that the power light was flashing nonstop and the computer wouldn't turn on. I looked at the back of the CPU and discovered a thick, sticky substance on the top of it and some on the back. I am guessing it went inside.

What can I do? Should I try to take it somewhere to be fixed? CAN it be fixed or am I screwed?
