The Great Doobie Prank

(with the excellent suggestion of tiki, reposting this here as well. :)

With a recent massive harddrive failure, I'm going back through all sorts of backups that had to be scattered across drives to save. Every now and then I come upon a little nugget or memory. Here's one about the college radio station I was a part of. I'm not sure what this was written for, probably the 50 year anniversary of the station.

------
It was the end of our Senior year (2002). For 4 years WDUB had been a part of our lives and we weren't quite ready to leave it behind. We didn't want to just fade out like the music before a PSA about Bigfoot stealing your shoes, we wanted to leave a memory in people's minds that made them think back fondly about the station and the slightly-odd DJs that controlled the 91.1 frequency. A prank was most definitely in need. Abe, Jess, and Ed (names not changed cause noone is innocent) came up with the idea of making the entire CD library disappear. There had been a great deal of "disappearing CDs" by malicious or careless parties around this time, so we thought we'd take it so far that people would laugh.

During Finals Week, Jess and Ed scheduled back to back radio shows so late into the night that we would have to shut down the station when we were done. This gave us plenty of time to get the job done. Abe met us at the station, and we began moving the CD catalog. We pulled every single CD, yes every single CD, and began stacking them in the newsroom downstairs. Using the mail bins, we did our best to keep everything in a decent order for the poor souls that would have to move them back (us). After several hours, we finally accomplished the gargantuan task of relocating 7000 CDs. The FM room and every drawer in the back room was completely empty save for the thick layer of dust that had built up over the years. I guess not cleaning is truly a Doobie tradition. With all of the CDs relocated, we settled down to making the "ransom note" in true ransom note fashion. Unfortunately at this point we could no longer say, "No issues of CMJ were harmed in this prank." Ransom note made, evidence stupidly left behind in the trash can, we locked up the station and ran into the darkness of night.
Later that night a DJ stumbled into the station, didn't see the CDs in the newsroom and thought they were truly stolen. A late night call woke up a very grumpy station manager, and the fur started flying. Over the next few days, rumours of suspension, criminal charges, and even not being allowed to graduate began to circulate. The station was closed down, locks changed, and students were not allowed to broadcast during finals week. This being the unexpected result of a prank that had many people laughing and some not so happy, we decided it was time to fix things. After some anonymous negotiation through a 3rd party, we were finally allowed back into the station to put the CDs back where they belonged in hopes the station could be reopened. Along with a true band of dedicated Doobie DJs, we spent the night carting the CDs back upstairs, alphabetizing and reorganizing, as well as finding many of the "missing" CDs.
Early into that morning, with all the CDs put away, many of the senior DJs bid a final farewell to the station they knew and loved so well. But we had all contributed our part to the crazy history that makes WDUB the best student organization at Denison University. Here's to 50 more years or music, fun, pranks, and something to do from 3-5am! To all the present and future DJs, keep the spirit alive.

----
I just checked out the WDUB website myself and find it kind of insulting that they say:
"In the fall of 2004, WDUB began a second era of its history as the station began streaming its on-air content to worldwide internet users." That's utter crap as I was streaming the station online via shoutcast while I was there and I graduated in 2002! Hell, I even had a webcam going for my shows. But maybe evidence of my existence with the Doobie was wiped clean after the above debacle.

Quarter to four in the a.m. and some gay-ass anime shit is on adult swim. I'm laughing at re-captioned pictures of cats. People call them macros and still others argue that they are called memes. You say potato, I say fuck you, that's all I'm gonna say about it.

I've been defending Ann(e) Coulter lately as a hobby. Boy, is that an uphill climb. Robert Mapplethorp(e) can take pictures of crucifices in jars of urine and raging, mega-huge greasy gay boners and people (including myself, don't be salty now) stamp around shouting shit about the first amendment and his photography has a right to be displayed. Why can't a batshit right-wing columnist say 'faggot' once in awhile?

faggot,faggot,faggot.

Doesn't hurt anyone.

Besides aren't there bigger fish to fry? Like the zionist sheeny cabal to make us all quit smoking and wear helmets and shit? I have quit smoking by the way. But not because the Jew York Times told me to.

Pete grado and I went to florida for a week. Checked out spring training. That guy knows more about baseball than anyone I know. It's freaky. There's an outfielder in the bigs right now named Milton Bradley. funny huh?

I guess I'm running out of steam here, and that gayass anime shit is over. Dudes, the boondocks cracks my shit up. I fuckin love that show. And spongebob's voice's wife is one of the voices in it. She was on Mr. Show back in the day. U need to check it out.

Also, there's some music you gotta pick up soon. Listen to Con Funk Shun's "Love Shine" and Stanley Clarke's "Journey to Love" as well as anything by the Isley Brothers. A good start is their album "The Heat is On!" and "3+3" which has a badass cover of Seals and Crofts' hit song "Summer Breeze" which is already excellent. They also cover Todd Rundgren's "Hello, It's Me" but I dunno which album it's from. And Footsteps in the dark kicks much ass. Ice Cube sampled it for today was a good day.

Can't fuck with punctuation. Not too much anyway. Coherence is what it is. BAfhalefakjhvlK

Later.

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: jess the great
To: personinchargeofstuff
Date: Thu, 18 Jan 2007
Subject: Thoughts from JTG

Hi Tiki --

I still don't know how you keep up with the 6 or 6,000-some versions of Tasty media sources you've created on the Net (i.e., livejournal, myspace, geocities, etc.)! But you ARE the Tasty, you've kept it alive which is why you are the personinchargeofstuff. You will always have my utmost respect.

However, I was reviewing Tasty credits on the old geocities page and to be honest, I feel the need to share my feelings regarding the whole affair:

1. Number one, people who generally don't even post anymore continue to enjoy the dignity and respect that comes with holding a title with Tasty.

2. Simon even gets to be in the credits and all he does is sit there stroking his gorgeous beard!

3. Okay, so why am I not in the credits? I've been there since the beginning! Me, Tiki and " Sketchy Converse Boy with White T-Shirts" sat in the bowels of Smith when the joke began that "That's a tasty paycheck!" Helllooooooo? I was there!

4. And though Tiki is the general den mother of our group, I feel that my presence in the original "Twisted Trinity" with Tiki and "Sketchy Guy Who Hangs White T-Shirts on Hangers" was crucial to the future development of the Tasty. Tiki, we have that bond, man. I met you at fucking orientation! We disguised ourselves as band members to escape stupid activities, and I know of the "Disappearing Semi."

5. I mean, I've always wanted to be on the credits, but at DU I was so preoccupied with taking middle-aged English lovers that I never really got to participate in the actual editing and printing of the Tasty. I did help distribute once, but I felt that I was not really worthy of the title, even though I've been there since the beginning. Now how times have changed! We're electronic, man, and the only editor and distributor IS the personinchargeofstuff, so it's like, give me a break. I contribute pretty regularly now -- I feel I'm pretty fucking worthy.

6. So to recap: I was there, man. Tiki, me, and "Sketchy Guy With Fucking Garfield Poster on Yellow Wall" were THE first Tasty members. And I am still here today contributing. I guess I am just starving for the much needed validation of my contribution to this great organization that will no doubt use it's clout to influence the next presidential elections and the like. It can be an honorary title, such as "International Woman of Mystery," or "Chair of the Betsy Code," or both, as I really an expert in both categories. There's also "International Correspondent." Well, "Sexy International Correspondent" sounds a bit better, doesn't it? These are just merely suggestions, of course.

So those are my thoughts and feelings. And though I am envious of Simon having a title for not doing anything, I have decided his role is quite important, really:

Simon is a very cool individual, being the Guy in the Chair, so that's actually okay. And even though he doesn't really do much directly for Tasty except sit in a chair and play video games (I'm assuming nothing's really changed over the 8 or 9 years we've known each other), he supports and loves Tiki, who in turn keeps the Tasty alive, so it's really a Circle of Life thing. And his beard is really gorgeous.

BTW, I am thick? What's the deal with livejournal and the livejournal community page? Should I join up? I'm members of so many similar sites and I have underused and can no longer remember login info for. If I join can I cancel the other stuff????

Anyhoo, off to Disney Country for work. You really have to be careful driving out there with the English tourists. And watch out for the people who move here permanently to live "The Disney Lifestyle". They're really twisted. And I really, really fucking hate Donald Duck. I have a sneaking suspicion that he is a pervert. I just felt the need to say that. Keep your loved ones and butter away from him.

Happy Fucking New Year!

Jess the Great

Someone plowed into the back end of our car and took off, yesterday, while it was parked outside of Simon's place of employment. It's not looking good... probably not worth saving. We're going to try to patch it up enough to make it to inspection, which is this summer, but we're not even sure we can do that.

wide shots. note how the trunk was forced apart... so all that rain we've been getting... yeah.

taillight closeup -- despite the total loss of cover glass, the bulbs aren't even cracked.
also note, we lost the "protege" logo, which really bums us out.
we even went back to the scene to see if we could recover it, but it was gone.
woulda been a nice souvenir. but we'll pry the "mazda" off if / when we junk it.

gas tank area -- potentially most dangerous part to have damaged, but we think it's OK

note how the trunk was rammed so far back that it came to rest on the rear window.
can't fit a piece of paper between them.
slightly more pressure and it probably could have gone clear through.

the bumper was rammed so hard, even the passenger side is hanging.

Okay, so my sleazy uncle-in-law DJs weddings, and last night he scored some uneaten wedding cake. Apparently the bride had many normal-size-cakes made for each table of guests, instead of one monster cake for the whole reception. and not all of them were cut into. So Uncle Sleaze got a whole, unblemished mini wedding cake, which he brought to new years. Nobody wanted any. "It's too sweet," they say. "Chocolate chip cake is weird." "I ate too much pork." So at the end of the night, there was still a whole, virgin wedding cake. "Does Denise want it?" they ask.

unghmaaanghrraammmnghaaaaghhhh....

It''s white cake with white icing and clear sprinkles that are really crunchy the way my teeth are going to be after having eaten it. And there are dark chocolate chips in it. And it was some spoiled rich Princess Bridezilla's special cake, on her special, special day. It tastes delicious, I think, as I eat chunks of it with my grubby fists, and crumbs fall on my craptastic kitchen floor. mrhranangh....

+++++

Has anybody heard the original karma cake story? It was the first year of college, and I decided to be one of the fifteen people who stayed the summer. At the end of summer, I was competely and totally impoverished a full week before class was to start. I'd just moved out of summer housing, where we all lived, into the next year's residence, which had been closed for the previous three months. I managed to survive the first two days on a massive raw zucchini someone had brought into work, with the help of a shaker of salt. After that I went a few days without eating at all. I finally snuck into the basement of my dorm and checked out the communal refrigerator, and found a whole birthday cake minus one piece.

I looked around shiftily, and macguyver-like, scooped the cake into a paper bag and absconded with it. (Actually, I don't even remember where I got the paper bag.) I chuckled, wild-eyed, the whole way back to my room. I flipped on the half-lights and the door clicked shut behind me. I slid the cake out of its paper wrapping, then removed the plastic lid. I lovingly cut myself a piece of the gratuitously stolen birthday cake of someone I didn't even know, and set it aside. I found myself a clean metal fork. "No cheapening this cake," I thought, "it meant a great deal to someone and should be treated with respect. After all, I only stole out of a sense of survival." I picked the plate of cake back up and took a bite. It was stale as a fucking rock. "And that's what I get," I thought, before my smile even crumpled, "for being low enough to steal someone's birthday cake." Bleeeeaaaagh, ptthhththththttt.

(No worries, though. Someone took me out for Long John Silver's within a day or two. The smell of the vinegar alone made me feel faint, and I tore into that thing like a spring bear. Within a few days the cafeteria was open again, and all was well.)
