On that note, I am going to use this next week, my vacation week, to really look at what I can do to make the changes I want, need, to make.
Better diet. Better sleep schedule. Yoga. Body sculpting Hooping Meditation Working with the beautiful green energy of the plant folk, including crafting my own teas and herbal remedies. Working with the Moon and the Sun. Working more deeply with the my Witchcraft--The Universal Life Force and that Energy in all.
It's a matter of working with that inner rythem, of connecting with the natural energy all around me.
I have known this for ages. I have tried and failed, due to exhaustion and depression. As I heal, I find I have the energy to get more done, to stay more consistant with my plans, and not procrastinate as much.
A part of accomplishing my listed goal(s), is to weed out all which doesn't work for me, and to set aside time to work on each thing I wish to accomplish. The hooping has been easy, so far. I love it so, and feel more comfortable hauling my hoop into town with me so I can practice before work, and during lunch break. The other stuff though, is harder. I am often busy with my garden project, and still too fatigued the rest of the time to push myself out of that well worn rut of habits that draw me away from the life I wish to live. |

I let my cynicism get the best of me regarding "The Dark Knight".
I was, frankly, a bit weary of the whole Batman franchise, and judging from the half-full theater, so were a lot of people. The trailers for the movie were simply inadequate, but it was easily the best Batman superhero movie ever. Epic. Dark. Complex.
Heath Ledger was sadly, tragically perfect as the Joker. Clearly Oscar-worthy, even if you don't take into account his death... better than Nicholson.
Christian Bale did a great job playing both of his major characters, Batman and Bruce Wayne. Finally, we have a Batman bringing some serious duality to the role!
The directing and screenplay was strong, put together by the minds behind "Momento". Frankly, The Dark Knight's screenplay is superior... just as complex and innovative as that film, while resting on far more solid ground.
The cinematography and action sequences were awe-inspiring at times. They used IMAX cameras to film several major scenes... and it shows, with images that look as good as a Frank Miller spash page.
Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman were both as good as they could be, considering their roles, which were strengthened because both of them were given moral dillemas... as was Aaron Eckhart as Harvey Dent / Twoface, Gary Oldman as Police Commissioner Gordon... in fact, if there is one main theme in this movie, it is the moral challenge of being a good guy when faced with impossible moral dilemmas... all brought to us by the ultimate ringmaster of nihilistic chaos, the Joker.
All in all, it was as good as it gets. But can they possibly do it again?! I'd like to see them try.
Maybe I wasn't quite as weary of the Batman franchise as I thought. |

| Flavia, the Heretic (1974) |
|

Looking at the DVD cover art you’d expect Flavia, the Heretic (Flavia, la monaca musulmana) to be a fairly typical slice of eurosleaze nunsploitation. And you’d be dead wrong. This one is at least as much arthouse as grindhouse. It has more in common with Ken Russell’s The Devils than with nunsploitation flicks like The Sinful Nuns of Saint Valentine. It’s a movie that combines exploitation elements with a serious political purpose.
Based on actual events in Italy in the 15th century, it follows the fortunes of Flavia Gaetani. After killing her lover her brutal father locks her away in a nunnery. Flavia is unwilling to accept the rules of convent life, and runs away with a Jewish scholar. She is recaptured, and is savagely flogged while her approving father looks on.
The sadistic discipline of the nunnery fails to break her spirit, and she comes under the influence of a rebellious older nun who encourages her to defy the authority of men. Her witnessing of a rape that goes unpunished while her father has an unfortunate nun who has fallen under the spell of a crazed sect known as the Tarantulas tortured to death has already led her to question the justice of male authority. When a marauding Moslem army appears on the scene Flavia is more than willing to throw in her lot with the invaders, and she is given the opportunity to find both love and sexual pleasure for the first time, as well as revenge. Events do not turn out quite as she anticipated however.
Flavia, the Heretic has its share of the ingredients you expect in a 1970s European exploitation flick - there’s some extreme violence, considerable brutality and torture as well as lots of nudity, male and female. But it’s all done in a much more sober style than in the usual run of exploitation fare. There’s not a trace of campiness about this film. And the violence does serve a serious purpose. It’s often confronting and very unpleasant, but it’s not gratuitous. Nor can it be said that the nudity and sex are gratuitous - fear of female sexuality (especially in the guise of religion) is a major theme The feminist message isn’t just tacked on as a justification for the exploitation elements - it’s the heart and soul of the movie. The acting is definitely a cut above the usual exploitation movie standard, with Florinda Bolkan outstanding as Flavia. And she is really given something to work with - Flavia is an intensely complex and contradictory character, and her character develops and changes throughout the movie.
The Synapse DVD looks terrific and features an interview with lead actress Florinda Bolkan, an interview that makes it clear that she took her performance very seriously indeed, and that she’s still proud both of her performance and of the film.
This is a disturbing film, a film that combines intelligence and passion with considerable entertainment value. It might not be quite what you expected, but it’s certainly very much worth seeing.

In a week two weeks (thanks, Creg), I will have left the country for around a year. On Aug 2nd, at 4:35 PM at Newark International, I will board Lufthansa flight 408 to Düsseldorf, Germany. I have not been on a plane since I was a baby. I have never left the country. I haven't really left the northeast US. I am scared out of my mind.
I'm a creature of routine. My "homesickness", if you can even call it that, happens before I leave a place. Like, I know what I'm leaving behind, all the comfort with knowing where things are, who your friends are, and not getting lost all the time (I have the direction sense of a sonar-less bat).
It's the leaving that makes me want to curl up into a ball and scream "NONONONONONONONONONO" like a petulant toddler, regardless if I'm happy where I am. (Which I'm not).
I spend the first month at Kapito, living with a host family, then I visit Andreas (the Swedish boy from last entry), then I go to Philipps Universität Marburg's IUSP (the Intensive German program).
So I've been ordering soap like crazy. |

There is a way to describe MJ's journal and the word elegant comes to mind first. Her layout is a classic mauve with cursive letterhead. Her icons are always subtle and the words that flow (unless she is frustrated!) are always beautiful.
But there is more, oh yes, there is that fragrance of vintage clothing and perfume. MJ's world is a cross between bohemian and modern and perhaps what you see is that combination of being from Quebec (oui!) and havibg just come back from spending a whole year in a metropolis like Seoul, South Korea.
This girl is the typical Aries, perhaps that's why I like her so much! As a Sagittarian I can so recognize an individual from a fellow fire sign from miles away (or cybermiles, if you wish to get technical). This young woman is adventurous, colorful, strong and, yes, very passionate about what she loves!
What is MarieJ anyway? Well...she is a painter. She is a photographer and a truly, amazingly good one (I am her biggest fan) and moreoever, an artist of the spirit.
MJ is a connoisseur too, ask her about the most incredible chanteusse and there she can truly give you a fabulous lesson in English, French or...heck even Korean! LOL!
I have had the privilege to know this beautiful friend for a few months, but I can promise you she is on my list to stay and she will be in yours too if you welcome her.
Her journal is a public one with a selective group of friends and communities. Feel free to browse if you want to travel or smile or feel better about your day.
Marie-Josée makes this world truly beautiful! |

Last night, I did something very bad. I ordered Pizza Hut! Bad, bad, bad. I almost ate an entire medium cheese pizza! And as if that wasn't bad enough, I ordered a 2 liter of diet Pepsi (because you can't get coke at Pizza Hut!). I RARELY EVER drink soda...I don't know what got into me...but the funny thing about last night occurred after I went to bed. I woke up this morning and remembered that I woke up not one but TWO times, went to the fridge and chugged directly from the 2 liter...I guess it was because I felt dehydrated? Ummm, did somebody say white trash? lol. So, yeah, that was totally excessive and completely unnecessary consumption...but whatever...it tasted good (is this a good attitude to have? I'm not sure). :) So, it's Saturday and even though it is 7:48AM as I type these words, I still feel like I slept in...because I kinda did...I didn't wake up til' 7AM!! That's an entire hour after I usually wake up. The coffee I made this morning reminds me of The Daily Grind. It was my favorite coffee shop in State College, PA and I used to go there nearly every day my senior year in high school...it was one of my many home away from home bases and I absolutely loved the place and the coffee. It closed a few years ago and who knows what is there now...it was like 10 years ago since I frequented that joint...it's amazing how the scenery can change in 10 years.
I wonder how boring my birthday is going to be this year...it's on a Monday and I have to work. Blah! New subject, I cannot believe how horrible the economy is...not a day goes by where I manage to escape from hearing or reading about it. I looked at the Gas Station by my job yesterday and noticed that gas was $4.69 a gallon. Ummm that is in-crazy! I'm so glad I don't have a car. I was reading my cousin's blog and she was talking about how she fixed up her bike...Well, I should buy a new bike...when I was a kid, that's all we would do...ride our bikes all over Indiana, PA & State College, PA. I remember that I learned how to ride my bike on a dirt road behind my Grandma's house when I was about 5 years old. It was a red schwinn with a banana seat and almost looked like this...

I was with my Aunt's Lindsay and Leslie and I remember falling off my bike several times before I got the hang of it. But that sure was an awesome feeling when I finally got the hang of it...and while I could totally find the appropriately fitting metaphor in relation to the previous story, I've got too much planned to continue thinking about the past anymore today. Wait, man, that was good times though...one day that I will probably never forget...after that, I remember the sun started to set and we retired to the living room for an episode of Silver Spoons...memories. Ok all, ttyl, make it a fantastic day!

On Sept. 29th, 1932, Charles C. Ebbets, a reknowned American photographer (1905-1978) embarked on what was going to become his magnum opus. Ebbets climbed to the 69th floor of the still-under-construction Rockefeller Center. Once up there he noticed the...highly peculiar habits of the laborers. Quite fascinated and curious, Ebbets took these series photographs which were to serve a double purpose. The first one, of course, was artistic. The second one was to dennounce the conditions under which these men did their job. I think that these guys were quite content, though! LOL! What do you think?
These photographs became classics and were a part of the 11 million photographs which comprised what is known as The Bettman Archive. Ebbets photographs have been exhibited worldwide. However, Lunch Atop a Skycraper became his signature image!
Enjoy!!
