This is an email I wrote to Andrew today:
Andrew,
The quote you linked to yesterday (http://andrewsullivan.theatlantic.com/the_daily_dish/2007/05/quote_for_the_d_21.html) has got to be the worst definition of faith that I've ever seen. I don't think I know anyone, believer or unbeliever, that thinks faith has anything to do with open-mindedness. Indeed, by definition, faith neccessitates a closed mind. To have faith is to have a preconceived notion of "truth." You have faith in God, so as you've said yourself, nothing could ever convince you that he is not real. You've closed your mind to the possibility. You cling to your belief. You open your mind only on condition that it fits in with your preconceived notions. For someone who normally criticizes the Orwellian co-opting of language, you don't seem to mind when it relates to your religion.
