Subject:MICHAEL TURNER PASSES AWAY AT 37

turner

We here at Comic Book Resources are very sad to report that artist Michael Turner has died after a long battle with cancer. He was 37. Aspen Comics’ Vince Hernandez told CBR News Saturday morning that Turner passed away Friday night at 10:42 Pacific Time at Santa Monica Hospital in Calfiornia. The news spread quickly at Wizard World Chicago, during what would have otherwise been a riotous night at the hotel bar, the mood suddenly turned somber with remembrances of Turner from friends and acquaintances. A minute of silence will be observed during Wizard World Chicago Saturday afternoon.

Turner is an artist best known for his work on books like “Witchblade,” where he got his start in comics, moving on to titles such as “Black Panther,” “Superman/Batman” and his very own creator owned series “Fathom” and “Soulfire” through his publishing company Aspen Comics. A prolific artist, he’s done work for both DC Comics and Marvel Comics, and has provided covers to some of the best-known comics published in the last ten years, including Brad Meltzer’s “Identity Crisis.”

In 2000, Turner was diagnosed with cancer -- chondrosarcoma in the right pelvis, which resulted in his loosing his hip, 40% of his pelvis and three pounds of bone. What followed was 9 months of radiation. The cancer has gone into remission and returned multiple times since he was first diagnosed.

For anyone who’s met Turner, they’re likely to tell you what a genuinely nice guy he was and how his spirit for life was higher than anyone else they had ever met. Oddly, my path crossed with Turner’s numerous times. We both live in Los Angeles, and on at least five different occasions we would run into each other at clubs or special events around the city. He seemed like the kind of guy who was up for anything and had a great sense of adventure, especially as evidenced by his love and excellence at water-skiing and martial arts.

Last year during Comic-Con International in San Diego, I invited Michael Turner out to the CBR Yacht for an interview. He was happy to come out to the boat. His colleague and friend, Vince Hernandez, called me the Saturday afternoon the interview was scheduled to say they were running late, but were on their way. I went to the end of the dock to greet them and there, off in the distance, was Michael, Vince and a friend of theirs walking slowly towards our slip. They were walking slowly because Michael was on crutches, recovering from the latest round of surgeries and treatment. It was a hot day, but there was Michael, making his way to the boat with a smile on his face. His strength of will was truly inspirational.

The resulting interview was a wonderfully sweet one. I remember talking with him about his comics, his covers, his health and much more. After the interview he and his crew hung out on the boat for a while, enjoying the calm moment away from the convention with a soda and good conversation.

Sadly, that video interview never made it on to the site (not for anything to do with Michael or the content of the interview), but we’ll make sure that video is encoded this week and published in his memory and so that all of you can see what sort of man Turner was.

Turner’s fight with cancer was truly inspirational. He fought it with dignity and grace.

More details concerning Turner’s passing are forthcoming. Those wishing to send their condolences to Michael Turner's family are encouraged to send them to:

CBR extends it’s heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Michael Turner. He’ll be sorely missed.

I like the ultimate's version of Elektra, it seems more believable and real than the story from the movie, also you can connect at some level with the character, or at the very least understand some of her reasons.

Press Release

Septagon Studios to Publish Masks

Image

Toronto, June 2008: Septagon Studios Inc. announced today that Masks will be the company’s second project. Masks will be making its full-color debut this summer. Written and illustrated by Aaron Rintoul (Dollhouse, The Never) Masks is a departure from Scorn, Septagon’s first project, with Masks’ emphasis on highly-rendered photography and design.

Aaron Rintoul describes Masks as “a dark psychological thriller, a story in which certain details are left open to reader interpretation.”

Masks is a photographic poem as well as an exploration into the nature of identity. The story takes place inside the psyche of a girl named Sarah, who sees pieces of others’ past lives as well as memories of her own as she follows a phantom killer and his victims through a distorted reality.

Masks will be a great addition to Septagon’s line-up. It has great visuals with a subdued story that complements the book’s art style. Aaron, as both writer and artist, has done a great job with this piece, and we’re proud to be publishing it,” said Nick Defina, President of Septagon Studios.

Masks #1 will available be this summer from Septagon Studios; more details are to follow.

So, this is probably a long shot. But I'll be eternally grateful if someone knows the right answer. I am trying to figure out where the name Ramsludge Hawthorne comes from.

All I know is he's a character in a fairly famous issue of a fairly famous comic book. Oh, and don't bother with google or wiki....it's not on there, I tried :-(

Ok, I'm shallow, but I was watching Batman Begins last night and it made me remember how happy we were when he was my comic book boyfriend.

But because I'm quite skint atm, I can't afford to just go on a wonderfully reckless Batman shopping spree.

Can anyone recc me some good issues or arcs please :)

Time:4:20 pm.
Hey all,

I'm a bay area fangirl and I'm looking for some more of us.  I'm putting together a group of us to meet weekly and chill and talk about comics without having to deal with the "but you're a girl!" or "Wow, girls like comics!" or any of that other crap.  Just people to discuss what's going on in comics - good and bad.  People to have a slice of pizza with once a week and say howdy.  It may be easier to find each other than to convert our current friends into fangirls. :)  So, anyone from the SF Bay Area/Silicon Valley interested?

Subject:Funny Comic Book Shop Experience
Posted by:kimmalat.
Time:11:19 pm.
Well, kinda funny, at least.  So, last week, I brought in a list (long) of comics I wanted added to my pulls.  Some of them, I've been buying for months and figured it was time to actually put them on the sub list.  So I give the manager the list and as he's leaving, he hands to list to the other shoppie and says, "Check over the subs and see if she already has them.  I'm sure she has some of these on there but for some reason she thinks she doesn't."  This was in an annoyed tone and frankly, the dude doesn't understand what a whisper is.  My boyfriend had been walking into the shop as the man was saying this and later said "well, he sounded annoyed and said she so since you were the only girl there i assumed he meant you."  Yeah, he did.

Here comes the funny part: After he leaves and he's a few feet away from the shop, I realize me and my boy are the only ones in the shop with the shoppie so I say fairly loudly,

Me:I loove how he thinks he's whispering!
Shoppie: Huh, wha'?
Me: <impersonates (poorly) the dude>
Shoppie: <laughs> No, just say "I'm making sure you're doing your job!" <says in mock indignant manner>
Me: Yeah, because it isn't like I check this shipping list every week to make sure I'm getting what I asked for!

We then spent a few minutes abusing the man.  I actually try to get to the shop when I know the mgr is leaving early (not closing).  The nice shoppie sometimes asks me how to get more girls in the door and I think it is time to tell him, erm, don't let the mgr abuse the customers!  I swear, for every wonderful nice shoppie, there is one of those snarky shoppies.  I say we snark back. :-p
